The latest ONS figures show UK residents made 13.4 million visits abroad in the three months to December 2015 compared with the same period a year earlier, representing an increase of 10%.
In the two years following the credit crunch in 2008, overall bookings fell by 15%.
Mark Tanzer, ABTA chief executive commented: “The latest figures from the Office of National Statistics showing a 10% rise in overseas visits from the UK in the last three months of 2015 are very positive and follow similar rises during the rest of last year.
“This is a clear indication that consumer confidence is strong once again, following the significant falls in passenger numbers we saw due to the financial crisis of 2008. The booking trends for 2016 are also looking positive, making it imperative that holidaymakers plan ahead and book early to get the widest choice and best value.”
