AirAsia has announced plans to launch its first flights to the city of Shantou, in southern China’s Guangdong province.
Commencing on 25 March 2016, the low-cost carrier will offer four weekly flights to Shantou, direct from Kuala Lumpur. The service will run every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.
“We are very happy to add Shantou into our list of destinations in China. There has been a demand for this route and we are pleased to announce this four times weekly direct flight. We are positive that this route will further add towards the number of Chinese tourist arrivals into Malaysia, especially with the recent announcement by the government to relax visa policies for China visitors into the country,” said Spencer Lee, AirAsia’s head of commercial.
AirAsia will become the second Southeast Asian LCC flying to Shantou, following Jetstar, which operates services from Singapore.
Shantou’s Jieyang Chaoshan International Airport also serves the wider region, including the cities of Jieyang, Chaozhou and areas of eastern Guangdong province, giving it a large and highly populous catchment area.
