AirAsia will become the first low-cost carrier to operate flights between Bangkok and Siem Reap, the gateway to Angkor Wat.

From 1 October 2013, the airline’s Thai subsidiary will launch daily flights on the route, using its 180-seat Airbus A320 aircraft. This will add 1,260 weekly seats between Bangkok and Siem Reap, providing more competition on the route that for many years was operated solely by Bangkok Airways.

“This year, AirAsia is focusing on the Indochina market as it heads toward the formation of the ASEAN Economic Community,” said Tassapon Bijleveld, CEO of Thai AirAsia.

“We’ve been on the lookout for new routes and saw Siem Reap as a destination that would enhance our network. The city will be the sixth stop in Indochina for us once it begins on 1 October 2013, following after Yangon, Mandalay, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh and Phnom Penh,” he added.

Thai AirAsia currently operates 70 weekly flights in the Indochina region, out of its total 250 weekly flights. And Tassapon said the airline is planning to “add even more destinations in the Indochina region” later this year.

The new flights will depart Bangkok’s Don Mueang International Airport at 1030 and arrive in Siem Reap an hour later, at 1130. The return leg departs at 1215, getting back into Bangkok at 1315.

Along with Thai AirAsia and Bangkok Airways, Cambodia Angkor Air also operates the Bangkok-Siem Reap route.
