AirAsia traffic climbs 13% in Q2

AirAsia continued to experience rising passenger traffic in the second quarter of the year.
The low-cost carrier group boarded 11.3 million passengers in the three-month period, up 13% compared to the 10.0m it carried in the same period last year. The airline has added 45 new aircraft to its fleet in the past 12 months, boosting its capacity by 15%. Group-wide average load factors dipped slightly to 79%.
Malaysia AirAsia remained the group’s biggest unit in Q2 2014, carrying 5.6m passengers, up 1% year-on-year, with loads of 80%. But Thai AirAsia continued to drive traffic growth, with passenger numbers surging 16% in the quarter to 2.8m. Load factors fell to 78% however, as demand failed to match the growth in capacity.
Indonesia AirAsia carried 2.0m passengers in Q2 2014, up 3% year-on-year, while Philippines AirAsia carried 924,200 passengers with load factors of 77%.
At the end of the second quarter on 30 June 2014, AirAsia’s total fleet stood at 166 aircraft – up from 121 at the same time in 2013. Of these, 80 are based in Malaysia, 37 in Thailand, 30 in Indonesia and 19 in the Philippines.
The start-up AirAsia India was not included in the quarterly results.
