Airbus has developed a new eco-efficient taxiing system for its A320 aircraft, which uses electrically-driven wheels for reduced fuel consumption during ground operations at airports. The solution represents a significant improvement over current airport processes, during which aircraft spend a large amount of time with their engines running. Airbus’s taxiing system allows an electric actuator to drive the landing gear’s wheels, negating the need for airport ground operators to tug the planes into position. The company is planning to proceed with full-scale rolling tests to begin in 2013.
