Airbus has commenced work on its new long-haul aircraft, the A330neo.
The first metal cutting took place at the Airbus factories in France recently, marking the official start of production.
Two versions of the A330neo will be developed – the A330-800neo and the A330-900neo. The first deliveries are scheduled to start in the fourth quarter of 2017, and the new models will replace the existing A330-200 and A330-300 aircraft.
The A330neo incorporates new Rolls-Royce engines and aerodynamic enhancements to make the aircraft more efficient, with Airbus claiming its will reduce fuel consumption by 14% per seat. It will also have an extended range, flying up to 740km further than the existing models.
Airbus has so far taken orders for 145 A330neos, with customers including Delta Air Lines, AirAsia X and Hawaiian Airlines.
