The landing gear of a Boeing 737 aircraft collapsed on landing at New York’s LaGuardia airport yesterday evening.
The aircraft, operated by Southwest Airlines, was carrying 150 passengers and crew from Nashville, Tennessee, when the incident occurred. The single-aisle B737-700 aircraft landed as normal, but as its front landing gear hit the runway, eyewitnesses said it appeared to collapse under the weight of the aircraft. Pictures from the scene show the stricken aircraft lying on the runway with it nose tilted down into the tarmac.
Texas-based Southwest said all passengers and crew were evacuated from the aircraft via emergency chutes, but that eight people – three passengers and three crew members – were injured.
“All customers have been deplaned and transferred to the terminal. Initial reports indicate local responders are caring for five customers and three flight attendants who have reported injuries at this time. Southwest is cooperating with local authorities,” the airline said in a statement.
