Airlines in India will now be fined for emptying their toilets in mid-air, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reports.
In an effort to address the menace of aircraft waste being ejected on to unsuspecting residents below, India’s National Green Tribunal has introduced a INR50,000 (approx. US$737) fine for offending airlines.
This follows reports of houses close to Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport being splattered with human waste from aircraft coming into land.
“Aircraft on landing shall be subjected to surprise inspection to see that human waste tanks are not empty. If any aircraft… tanks are found empty on landing, they shall be subjected to environment compensation of INR50,000 per default,” it was ruled.
Aircraft waste should be disposed of by ground handling personnel once the aircraft lands.
