This year, escape the cities and the holiday season frenzy and opt for the tranquillity of the Kingdom of Bhutan for a magical festive holiday. Nothing compares to experiencing the Christmas spirit in a new and beautiful place. With its calmness and breathtaking scenery Bhutan is also an incredibly romantic place to spend the holiday with loved ones. Whether you’re looking for adventure or relaxation, Bhutan offers a highly memorable escape from the chaos of the festive season and invites you to immerse yourself in its rich culture, pristine natural surroundings and spiritual serenity. While Christmas is not widely celebrated in Bhutan, hotels get into the holiday spirit with dazzling displays of lights, decorations, seasonal menus and festive-themed events.

The temperatures during winter in Bhutan vary depending on the region and altitude. While high-altitude areas experience snowfall and mountain peaks are snowy year-round, the lower valleys remain sunny but chilly and crisp. The majestic snow-covered Himalayan peaks create a gorgeous backdrop for winter adventures. Outdoor enthusiasts can trek through some of the most beautiful trekking trails in the region; while you trek through the lush green forests, the skies are often clear, providing unobstructed views of gorgeous snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas, including Bhutan’s highest peak, the Gangkhar Puensum.

For those seeking family adventure, Bhutan’s pristine wilderness offers an ideal setting for hiking or camping. Hike through the beautiful forests of Bhutan, or sections of the Trans Bhutan Trail in Phobjikha valley, where you can even spot the rare and globally endangered black-necked cranes who migrate to Bhutan every winter from the north. Imagine waking up to a crisp, clear morning with views of the serene Himalayan valleys on Christmas morning! You can also hike up to the Tiger’s Nest monastery with your family and feel the living energy and spiritual aura permeating the place.

Known as the Land of Medicinal Herbs and for prioritising wellbeing, in Bhutan, wellness takes on a special significance, practices that nurture the soul, promoting mindfulness and fostering a sense of inner peace. You can take part in meditation and yoga sessions, escaping from the hustle and bustle of daily life, or get exclusive astrology readings from expert Buddhist masters. Experience the aroma of hot stone baths permeating the air, offering therapeutic relaxation and rejuvenation amidst the crisp mountain air.

Bhutan Airlines, the first private airline in Bhutan, has revealed plans to launch flights between Paro International Airport and Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates starting January 2024. This announcement was made during the airline’s 10th-anniversary celebration at Pemako Hotel in Thimphu, attended by dignitaries, international agents, and well-wishers, signifying a major milestone for Bhutan Airlines.

This marks the inauguration of the first direct airline connection between the Gulf region and Bhutan post-pandemic. Bhutan Airlines has applied to operate a bi-weekly service from Paro to Sharjah, with a layover in Dhaka. The proposed route seeks to streamline travel to Bhutan for Western travellers, particularly those residing or passing through the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region, significantly reducing their overall travel time.

During the event, Bhutan Airlines introduced a new partnership with World Ticket (W2), a Global Distribution System (GDS) sub-hosting service. This virtual code-share arrangement offers a global distribution and ticketing solution, enabling Bhutan Airlines flights to be easily accessible and available for purchase through a wide range of GDS channels and Online Travel Agencies (OTAs). The partnership is effective immediately and will provide access to 180 Billing & Settlement Plan (BSP) markets through W2.

In June 2023, Bhutan Airlines’ CEO, Pema Nadik, announced the signing of a bilateral interline ticketing agreement with Thai Airways. The reservation systems of both airlines have been seamlessly integrated for bilateral Interline E-Ticket (IET), enabling Thai Airways and Bhutan Airways to issue tickets for each other’s routes.  The next phase involves launching Inter Airline Through Check-in (IATCI) with Thai Airways, simplifying travel for passengers connecting to and from Bhutan.

The event also included the official announcement of Bhutan Airlines’ partnership with the  Bhutan Olympic Committee, demonstrating the airline’s dedication to supporting and promoting the spirit of sports for Bhutanese athletes participating in international events.

Established in 2013, Bhutan Airlines began with domestic operations using an 8-seater Pilatus aircraft. It quickly expanded its services to international destinations, introducing the state-of-the-art Airbus 320 aircraft. During Bhutan’s tourism boom from 2017 to 2019, Bhutan Airways successfully transported almost 400,000 passengers, according to the CEO.

Highlighting Bhutan Airlines’ pioneering charter operations, CEO Pema Nadik proudly shared the airline’s role in introducing charter flights to the unexplored Vietnam market, boosting visitor numbers.

Acknowledging the unique challenges brought about by the pandemic, CEO Nadik emphasised Bhutan Airlines’ role as a crucial lifeline. The airline operated repatriation flights for stranded citizens and transported essential medical supplies and goods, in collaboration with the national carrier, Drukair.

The CEO of Bhutan Airlines, Pema Nadik, also extended an apology for the unavoidable flight cancellations during the initial days of the scheduled operation’s restart post-COVID. In reassurance, the CEO stated, “I stand here today and give you my assurance that those days of uncertainty are over, and we will stand by our pledge to provide safe and reliable service henceforth”.

Amankora reveals the heart of Bhutan with ever rarer and more awe-inspiring cultural experiences for 2023. Well-suited to those embarking on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, Amankora continues to tell the story of the Kingdom of Bhutan through unique, culturally enriching experiences across its five intimate lodges.

New for 2023, several experiences reveal the very best of the Kingdom’s rugged Himalayan landscapes, discovering the once-forgotten ramparts of its central and western valleys. Built-in 1638 on a cliff at the confluence of two rivers, the defense fortress of Wangdue Dzong has finally been restored. A key experience until 2012, when an accidental flame sustained significant damage, the magnificent Wangdue Dzong is ready to welcome visitors once again to its grounds after a decade of rebuilding and careful restoration.

Another piece of history restored; the Trans Bhutan Trail provides Amankora with further opportunity to discover the pristine nature that surrounds. Dating back to the 16th century, the 402-kilometre-long trading and pilgrimage route was abandoned in the 1960s following the construction of Bhutan’s first major roads. After 60 years, the trail has been reestablished, allowing the Bhutanese to walk in the steps of their ancestors, and those staying with Amankora to follow the ancient path with curated daily hikes and multi-day experiences, paired with stays in all the five lodges.

Thimphu – Secrets of ancient incense and the arts

Situated in the forested Thimphu Valley, home to Bhutan’s capital city, Amankora Thimphu is a 16-suite lodge tucked into the pine-scented woods of the Motithang area. Ideally placed for exploring Thimphu’s museums, traditional shops and numerous cultural sites, it also serves as a quiet retreat, completely removed from the city’s activities.

New this year, learn more about the ancient art of incense from artisans at Nado Poi. Using a wide selection of rare, foraged or homegrown herbs, spices and ingredients from across the Himalayas, Nado Poi’s skilled local craftspeople create blends of sacred smoke, highly sought after by monastic bodies and temples all over the world. Using a 350-year-old recipe passed down through generations, Nado Poi also makes exclusive incense sticks and powder blends for the Royal Family of Bhutan. Available to those visiting Thimphu, the exclusive half-day Secrets of Ancient Incense experience takes place at the brand’s local workshop, and includes a selection of raw materials to create, roll and cut the incense, guided by a Nado Poi artisan.

Another renowned artist local to Thimphu, Gyempo Wangchuk, hails from the Zurig Chusum Institute, Bhutan’s most important art school focusing on 13 traditional arts and crafts. Specialising in painting, Gyempo’s work ranges from temples and sacred scrolls to present-day contemporary art. Exclusively for the new season, private painting sessions with Gyempo Wangchuk can be arranged either at Thimphu lodge or in his studio, where guests can learn traditional Bhutanese painting with a contemporary twist.

Paro – Private dining in nature

Sheltered within a blue-pine forest of glistening conifers, 24-suite Amankora Paro lies beneath the ruins of the 17th-century Drukyel Dzong (fortress-monastery), a 30-minute drive from Bhutan’s international airport. As with each Amankora lodge, it offers elegant dining and living rooms with panoramic views, an intimate spa, and expansive outdoor areas for relaxing in the sun or beneath the stars. Overlooking snow-capped Jhomolhari, each suite features its own bukhari, a wood-burning stove.

Nestled in the foothills, where pilgrims begin their journeys in the shadows of the iconic Tiger’s Nest, Amankora’s new log cabin provides a breathtaking prelude or a cosy finale for hikes up to the legendary monastery. Accessible via a hidden path just moments from the main hiking trail, the quaint cabin is surrounded by a verdant pine forest which opens onto tranquil lawns with sweeping vistas of the cliffside monastery structures.  Leave Paro lodge before the break of dawn and experience a sunrise breakfast as the Himalayan Sun slowly illuminates The Tiger’s Nest or opt for a restorative lunch with a refreshing drink and relaxing 30-minute foot massage to soothe tired limbs, followed by a sumptuous lunch in full view of the Tiger’s Nest.

For a truly special culinary experience, up to 30 guests can enjoy a Forest & Fortress Lunch or Dinner during their stay at Amankora Paro. Set amidst a pine forest and overlooking the historic Drukgyel Dzong fortress, tables are set in a lush clearing where guests can choose to dine beneath the stars or under a traditional Bhutanese ceremonial tent, lit with stringed lights and flickering lanterns, accompanied by local music. A traditional dance performance or musical troupe can be arranged with Amankora signature cocktails and canapés whilst enjoying dinner prepared by the in-house chef.

Adding to its already extensive experience guide, in the year ahead Paro lodge will offer an insight into one the world’s rarest teas. Originating from the Camelia Sinensis trees planted by the former King of Bhutan, Thunder Dragon Tea is gifted to the villagers of Samcholing where the tea trees are grown by the community and gently nurtured by mists from the verdant gorge, Himalayan spring water and the valley’s organic, fertile soil. Guests of both Paro and Thimphu lodge are invited to discover the nuances of this unique green brew with Thunder Dragon High Tea, where its delicately aromatic flavour is paired with sweet and savoury treats created by the culinary team. With every sip, guests are transported to the Kingdom’s mountains, springs and skies.

Punakha – Unveiling gastronomic traditions

Amankora Punakha lies east of the dramatic Dochu La Pass and just north of the resplendent Punakha Dzong that dominates the confluence of the Mo Chhu and Po Chhu rivers. Surrounded by rice paddies and fruit plantations, the lodge occupies a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse with twelve guest suites set in an orange orchard near the 30-metre infinity swimming pool.

Discovering culture through cuisine is central to the Amankora experience. At Punakha the lodge provides torma making classes, offering an insight into one of the most sacred Buddhist celebration cakes. Made with butter and barley flour, torma cakes are used to adorn altars during traditional Buddhist ceremonies and created primarily by monks as offerings during holy rituals and festivals. Dyed with colourful pigments, shaped by hand, blessed and finally offered in accordance with its specific creation – whether to represent a deity, consumed partially as part of a ritual in a feast, as a healing, medicinal symbol or even as a vessel to obstruct spirits – partake in this unique heritage practiced all over the Buddhist realms of the Himalayas. Classes are to be held during auspicious dates and festivals and hosted by a monk, with private classes available on request.

Gangtey – Experience Bhutan’s wild frontiers on horseback

Providing a restful base with eight suites, Amankora Gangtey is located in the seldom-visited valley of Phobjikha near the quaint village of Gangtey. From its forested knoll, the lodge boasts panoramic views across the gorge to the regal Gangtey Goemba, a 16th-century monastery, and easy access to the winter habitat of the rare, black-necked crane.

A new way to explore Gangtey’ s pristine corners and relive the early days of Bhutan’s wild frontiers, is on Yuta horseback. A distinct Himalayan breed known for their mild temperament and impeccable sense of balance, begin the expedition from the lodge grounds, passing through scenic traditional farming villages, wooden bridges and charming farmhouses before completing the hour-long loop passing through fields littered with prayer poles gently flowing with the breeze.

Bumthang – A naming ceremony in the Choekhor Valley

The eastern-most lodge, 16-suite Amankora Bumthang rests adjacent to the First and Second King’s palace, Wangdichholing, in the Choekhor Valley. This region of sloping pine forests, apple orchards and fertile farmland is known for its cottage industries that produce the sought-after Bumthang butter, cheese, honey and a variety of fruit spirits and brandies.

New for 2023, guests to Bumthang lodge are invited to be blessed with a new Bhutanese name from Sey Lhakhang, the valley’s most important name-giving institution. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, names in Bhutan are given by Lamas and Rinpochhes from the temples, and in this special ceremony names can be given to guests through an intimate ceremony with a Lama. Taking place in the private altar room of the monastery, the ceremony begins with a declaration of date of birth before the Lama performs a Buddhist name calculation using a unique method of Buddhist astrology. Following the name presentation, explanation and blessing, guests are invited to light butter lamps for wishes of wellbeing in the weeks and months that follow.

Bhutan’s Department of Tourism (DoT) has announced that a range of exclusive incentives on Bhutan’s Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) have recently been confirmed, which are designed to encourage longer stays, enabling greater exploration of all 20 provinces in the Kingdom. Bhutan’s SDF is currently set at USD 200 per person, per night for all guests (excluding Indian nationals, who are charged 1,200 Rupees per night, per guest).

To enable guests to discover more of what this diverse kingdom offers and encourage longer-stay travellers, exclusive SDF incentives for US Dollar SDF-paying guests have been confirmed for bookings made from June 01, 2023 onwards, and are valid for stays in Bhutan between June 01, 2023 until December 31, 2024.

The SDF is a way that visitors support Bhutan’s ongoing development and sustainability projects. Collected by the national exchequer, the funds raised through the SDF are allocated to various projects that enhance facilities, services, and infrastructure for Bhutanese nationals and visitors, as well as funding free healthcare, education, and upskilling the tourism and hospitality sector. The funds also contribute to the preservation of the nation’s rich heritage and pristine landscapes, by funding conservation, preservation, and other sustainable initiatives that support the attainment of UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Depending on their planned itinerary, visitors can choose any of the following options with effect from June 01, 2023:

  • 4 + 4:  Pay the SDF of USD 200 per night, per person, for four nights, and receive up to four additional nights without the daily levy.
  • 7 + 7: Pay the SDF of USD 200 per night, per person, for seven nights, and receive up to seven additional nights without the daily levy.
  • 12 + 18:  Pay the SDF USD 200 per night per person, for twelve nights, and receive up to eighteen additional nights without the daily levy.

As per the Tourism Levy Act of Bhutan 2022, the SDF is exempt for children of five years and below; and there is a concessionary levy rate of 50% for children between the ages of six-12 years. Anyone aged 12 and above pays the full SDF rate. The same long-stay SDF incentives outlined above can be applied to US-dollar SDF-paying children.

All incentives ‘reset’ after the timeframe ends. An online tool to help calculate the total SDF payable per person is available to view on the Department of Immigration’s website at: https://visit.doi.gov.bt/.

An extended stay allows guests to explore more of Bhutan’s 20 dzongkhags, from pristine highland communities to cultural villages and nature hotspots. This incentive will allow nature lovers to venture into the farthest corners of Bhutan’s wilderness, offering the chance to spot some of the world’s rarest birds and mammals whilst avid trekkers can explore the newly restored Trans Bhutan trail or the famed Snowman Trek. The culturally inclined are invited to sample all the flavours, festivals, and restorative pace of life in Bhutan’s remote villages – from east to west, and north to south.

Visitors are also being given another opportunity to meaningfully contribute to Bhutan. Each visitor to will have the opportunity to plant a tree towards Bhutan’s goal of one million new trees, helping to maintain the kingdom’s carbon-negative status and exceptional forest cover. Tree saplings will be provided to guests who wish to plant them during their stay in Bhutan, before being maintained by Bhutan’s De-suung national service project.

“These SDF incentives are designed to encourage longer stays in the country,” said H.E. Dr. Lotay Tshering, the Honourable Prime Minister of Bhutan. “In forming these options, we have listened to the feedback of the industry, to the recommendations of ABTO and other stakeholders, while also balancing the original vision behind the revisions to our tourism strategy in the first place, to ensure that we focus on high value, low volume tourism,” he added.

“We are delighted to welcome guests to share in the wonder and wilderness of Bhutan,” said Dorji Dhradhul, Director General of Bhutan’s Department of Tourism. “We are proud of our kingdom, and proud of the contribution that our guests make to the pursuit of our sustainable development projects. These incentives are an opportunity for our friends from around the world to experience more, travel further, and stay longer – and by doing so, to actively participate in progress and preservation that benefits our citizens and the wider world. We hope that with these incentives, together with the recent reduction in the monument fees and the 24-hour SDF waiver for border towns, Bhutan will be a more accessible destination for a wider range of guests,” he concluded.

The Department of Tourism recently announced that a total of 52,173 tourists have arrived in Bhutan since Bhutan’s reopening to tourism after the Covid-19 pandemic on 23rd September 2022 until 10th May 2023. Out of this figure, 32,517 are Indian guests who have paid Nu. 1,200 per person, per night, while 19,656 are other international guests who have paid USD 200 per night. The tourist arrival data for April was around 47% more than what was forecasted. The Department of Tourism is predicting 98,245 tourists to arrive in Bhutan in 2023.

A small land-locked country in Asia, nestled in the world’s highest peaks, Bhutan is a unique destination where happiness and peace of mind are contagious. The Himalayan Kingdom, also known as ‘The Land of The Thunder Dragon’ is a destination for nature lovers, adventure aficionados, wildlife enthusiasts, culture buffs and those in search of a truly unique and captivating travel experience. Home to many luxury hotels, restaurants and bespoke experiences for travelers of all ages to enjoy, the country also offers a sophisticated escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Located betweenTibet (China) and India, Bhutan exudes spirituality; inspiring the Kingdom’s culture and creating a destination that welcomes people of all backgrounds and religions. This warm welcome creates an environment perfect for the Middle Eastern traveler, Muslims and non-Muslims alike. Bhutan offers ease of accessibility for travelers from the region with transfers available from Delhi, Kathmandu and Calcutta – all within approximately a four-hour flight from the UAE and KSA.  Other transfers include via Bangkok, Singapore and Bangladesh on a regular basis.

In September 2022, the Kingdom unveiled a new Tourism Strategy underpinned by transformations in three key areas: enhancements to its sustainable development policies, infrastructure upgrades, and the elevation of the guest experience. This strategy is driven by the Kingdom’s commitment to sustainable practices, with a 200 USD (AED 735) daily tourist fee contributing to programs that preserve Bhutan’s cultural traditions, as well as sustainability projects, infrastructure upgrades and opportunities for youth. Part of this strategy was also the removal of the Minimum Daily Package Rate (MDPR); a minimum spend per day required by visitors. This tourism strategy gives visitors peace of mind that their expenses are making a positive impact on the environment and protecting it for generations to come.

With 70% of the country forested, Bhutan is the world’s first carbon negative country; reflecting the country’s unique approach to sustainable tourism. A pleasant year-round climate of warm to moderate temperatures with cool, crisp evenings makes Bhutan the perfect destination to visit any time of the year. There isn’t just one Bhutan to discover; there are many. From storied cities, to soaring mountains, the door to the kingdom is open once again to old and new friends.

The not-for-profit sustainable tourism initiative showcases a unique piece of Bhutan’s cultural heritage for the benefit of its people – with treks ranging from one hour to one month. Other family activities include archery camps, horse riding, white water rafting, animal spotting, traditional arts and crafts, and much more.

For those looking to catch sight of the breath-taking natural beauty from the air, there exist many private helicopter tours. This offers the unmissable opportunity to savour a unique vantage point of the many glimmering waterways and sweeping forests that can be found in the country.

As Himalayan country, Bhutan has a many beautiful rivers ideal for water sports. The most popular rivers for rafting are Mo Chu and Pho Chu in Punakha and rafting can be done throughout every season of the year. Archery, kayaking, trekking, mountain-biking, fishing, rock-climbing and paragliding are some of the other outdoor activities adventure lovers can enjoy amongst beautiful surroundings.

The lush tropical forest in the southern lowlands is home to tigers, rhinos, clouded leopards and sloth bears while the forests of the temperate zone are home to leopards, goral and serow and the national animal of Bhutan; the amazing Takin. Many bespoke tours offer visitors a chance to get up close and personal with these wonderful animals.

Bhutan has a rich cultural heritage that has been kept intact ever since it came into existence. Travelling the world’s happiest country, visitors will be amazed by the exotic beauty of myriad well-preserved heritage and fascinating tourist attractions, providing a sublime overview of real Bhutanese culture. The Kingdom follows the peaceful teachings and beliefs of Buddhism, reflected in the many breath-taking monasteries and temples open for visitors.

The people of Bhutan celebrate many festivals throughout the year such as Paro Tshechu, the spring festival celebrated in March, Gomphu Kora Festival in Trashigang and Haa Summer Festival. These colourful gatherings are celebrated with vigour and enthusiasm and make for a captivating visitor experience.

 Cuisine
Inspired by local traditions and utilizing the many locally grown ingredients, Bhutan offers many delicious culinary delights. The food of Bhutan may have been influenced by India, China, and Tibet, but the local food still remains unique. Visitors can find many vegetarian restaurants within the country, providing many ‘halal’ options for visitors. Many restaurants provide Arabic mezze and more than 50% of most menus offer vegetarian options with some of the five-star hotels offering halal-certified meats. Most of the fruit and vegetables in Bhutan are grown locally and are fully organic. All meat is imported as it is illegal to slaughter any living thing in Bhutan.

 Wellness
Bhutan is blessed with an enchanting scenery and a soul-captivating aura providing everything that one looks for in a holiday to leave completely revived and rejuvenated. Bhutan boasts many Yoga & Meditation centers, including intensive programs to retreats, drop-in centers and hermitages creating ample opportunities to achieve a state of inner calm and zen. Visitors can also drop into a monastery and unwind in a quiet session with the resident monks while also soaking souls in a hypnotic scenery and soft Buddhist chants reverberating in the air.

For those looking to indulge in relaxing treatments, the many wellness centers and hotels offer soothing therapies and treatments traditional Bhutanese Healing Therapies and a unique treatment called Manchu also known as ‘Hot Stone Bath Therapy’, which involves heating river stones on fire until they’re red hot, then immersing them in wooden troughs of water to cure conditions like joint pains, arthritis, soreness, inflammation and even sinus.

As a biodiversity hotspot with several endangered species of flora and fauna and more than 7,000 species of vascular plants; the practice of traditional medicine in Bhutan is a key characteristic of the country’s approach to wellness. Cordyceps Sinensis, one of the world’s most popular superfoods, is a super mushroom with medicinal value that grows in the mountains of Bhutan.

A kingdom steeped in history, with a gaze fixed on the future, Bhutan is now entering a moment of evolution. Arriving guests will become partners in this transformative moment, making a meaningful contribution towards preserving what is priceless.

Bhutan’s Department of Tourism (DoT) has confirmed that the  Drukyul’s Literature Festival by Bhutan Echoes will be held from 4th to 6th August 2023 in  the capital Thimphu. The annual literature festival, organized independently by Bhutan  Echoes, a literature and arts initiative, aims to celebrate works of literature and arts by  Bhutanese and international authors, thinkers, artists and influencers, and promote  Bhutanese literature, culture and arts to the world. Every year it draws an assemblage of  reputable writers, thought-leaders, artists and change-makers from Bhutan and around  the world. It is an inclusive and diverse international event that is free and open to all.

This year, the 12th edition of the literature festival will take place in the Royal University  of Bhutan (RUB) auditorium in the capital Thimphu. The theme of this year’s festival is  ‘Reconnecting and Reviving’, an apt concept at a time when we long to find our way in a  world that has changed so much. The festival will feature more than 35 in-person sessions  and programs that celebrate the diverse fields of literature, arts and culture. Visitors will  get wonderful opportunities to experience evocative sights and sounds, stunning art  exhibitions, music performances, interactive workshops, open mic nights, poetry  readings, film screenings and more.

The Drukyul’s Literature Festival not only provides a space to discuss great stories and  diverse ideas, but is also a forum to explore the issues that we face in this new reality  after the pandemic. From the changing trends of travel and the need for human and  community connection to the state of the environment, economy and wellbeing, there will  be something for everyone.

This year’s exciting speaker lineup includes Professor Toby Walsh (Laureate fellow, and  professor of artificial intelligence at the UNSW), Benjamin Flouw (Author and illustrator of  The Golden Glow), Jean-Marc Rochette (Creator/artist and illustrator of The  Snowpiercer), among others. The festival will feature esteemed speakers and new voices  from India, Nepal, East Asia, Europe, and the US.

“Drukyul’s Literature Festival by Bhutan Echoes is an annual literary festival that brings  together acclaimed speakers, thinkers, authors and artists from Bhutan and around the  world to motivate pertinent conversations, and have immersive experiences of Bhutan’s  culture, art and natural beauty. It’s a place to learn, share, reflect, connect and reimagine  ourselves and the world around us through books, storytelling, art, culture and music,”  concluded Dorji Dhradhul, the Director General of the Department of Tourism.

There are always festivals happening in every part of Bhutan throughout the year, many of which are derived from Buddhism and have their origin in the country’s rich and storied heritage. The most well-known festivals are the tsechus, celebrated by all 20 districts on different days. Among all the tshechus, the two most popular festivals, the annual Punakha Tshechu is held from 1st to 3rd March 2023 and Paro Tshechu will be held on 1st to 5th April 2023 respectively. Another special festival, Punakha Dromche has happened right before Punakha Tshechu, from 26th to 28th February 2023.

The two festivals in Punakha happen every year in the beautiful courtyard of the stunning fortress Punakha Dzong as the jacaranda flowers begin to bloom. Punakha district, located in the western part of Bhutan, about a three-hour drive from Thimphu, used to be the capital of Bhutan, and is the winter residence of the Chief Abbot of Bhutan. Punakha Dromche is a special and unique festival as it is the only festival in the country that dramatically reenacts a 17th century battle against the Tibetan army.

The festival features local militia men or ‘pazaps’ dressed in traditional battle regalia that is reminiscent of the time when in absence of an armed force, eight great villages or ‘tshochen’ from Thimphu and Punakha came forward and expelled the invading Tibetan forces who had come to take away the sacred relic, Rangjung Kharsapani. The battle reenactment is then followed by a demonstration of ‘norbu chushani’ or immersion of relic in the Mo Chhu river. To hoodwink the Tibetan invaders, the 17th century unifier of Bhutan, Zhabdrung Rinpoche is said to have dropped a decoy of the sacred relic into the Mo Chhu river. This demonstration by the river is watched by hundreds of people gathered in the Dzong.

On the final day of Punakha Dromche a massive copper bowl inscribed with scriptures is dragged into the centre of the courtyard. The bowl is filled to the brim with alcohol which is then blessed and distributed to the people attending the festival.

Following the dromche is the three-day annual Punakha Tshechu, also held in the courtyard of Punakha Dzong. Tshechus are the most popular festival in Bhutan. They are conducted on the 10th day of a month of the lunar calendar, which means every district celebrates their own tshechu on different dates. Punakha Tshechu, like all other tshechu is held in reverence of Guru Rinpoche, the tantric Buddhist Vajra master, and is one of the most popular tshechus in the country. It is attended by locals and foreign visitors, as well as people from across the country. The tshechu will feature various mask dances or ‘cham’ and traditional Bhutanese folk dances. People dress in their best festival attire and families bring picnic lunches to come and watch the festival. Tshechus are one of the most significant and visible manifestations of the Bhutanese culture, art and traditions.

Similarly, the annual Paro Tshechu is held at the beautiful Rinpung Dzong in Paro, the district where the country’s first and only international airport is located. The festival will feature various mask dances and traditional Bhutanese folk dances performed by both monks as well as locals. The main highlight of the festival is the unfurling of the immense embroidery of Guru Rinpoche (Guru Throngdrel) on the final day depicting the eight manifestations of Guru Rinpoche. The giant embroidery covers the entire three-story wall and many people queue up to view and get blessings from the throngdrel every year.

For adventure seeking travellers, Bhutan’s annual international marathon, organised by the Bhutan Olympic committee will be held on March 08 this year. The marathon will take participants through mostly rural places on hard pack dirt and pavements. The race will begin at 08:00 am in Gasa district at an elevation of 6,700m asl, descending into shallow lands towards Punakha and following the Mo Chu river with stunning views of monasteries, rice fields, villages and the khamsum Yulley Namgyal chorten. After crossing the 300-foot-long suspension bridge across the Pho Chhu river, the marathon will end at the picturesque Punakha Dzong. Both locals and foreigners participate in the marathon every year, making it one of the most thrilling adventure activities in the country.

Department of Tourism (DoT) Bhutan, on behalf of the Snowman Race Secretariat, has successfully hosted the first ever Snowman Race. Billed as the world’s most challenging ultra-marathon, which took place between 13th to 17th October 2022 in Bhutan.

A total of 29 endurance athletes, including nine Bhutanese runners, competed over 203 kilometres (125 miles) across five days at an oxygen-sparse average of 4,500m (14,800 feet) with the highest point of 5,470 metres (17,946 feet). Dubbed as the world’s toughest race, the trail has been completed by fewer people than have summited Mt. Everest, and normally requires between 20-25 days to complete.

An initiative conceived by His Majesty The King of Bhutan, the Snowman Race aims to generate greater awareness about the climate emergency. Bhutan’s fragile ecosystem makes it highly vulnerable to the adverse impacts of climate change, exposing the country annually to increasing calamities such as landslides, unpredictable weather changes and a rapidly changing ecosystem.

The ultra-marathon featured athletes from the USA, Canada, Japan, Australia, France, Germany, Singapore, Tanzania, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, as well as nine from Bhutan. International athletes were selected by a team of professionals, who trained themselves under the supervision of the Snowman Race production, and every athlete was acclimatized to the rugged and elevated topography before competing in the Race.

The Race navigates the most challenging trekking route in Bhutan, the Snowman Trail, passing through some of the most stunning areas in the Kingdom including the remote Lunana area; A seldom-visited community of nomadic herders living between glaciers. Competitors will also traverse the base of Gangkhar Puensum, the world’s highest unclimbed mountain (and Bhutan’s tallest peak at 7570m/ 24,836ft).

The route straddles the mountain passes between Gasa Dzong and Chamkhar Town in Bumthang, and in places reaches altitudes of 5470m (17,946 ft). The trail takes in two of the largest national parks in the country, the Jigme Dorji National Park and the Wangchuck Centennial Park. Both parks represent the most biodiverse areas of the eastern Himalayas and stretch from deciduous forest to ice fields and glaciers, and are home to several incredibly rare and protected flora and fauna.

The Brussels-based exhibition by Bhutan has the theme of ‘healing with happiness’ and will run until 31 March. The Tourism Council of Bhutan (TCB) has announced that Bhutan has inaugurated its largest-ever overseas art exhibition in Brussels, Belgium. The exhibition, organized VAST Bhutan (Voluntary Artists Studio of Thimphu) in partnership with the Royal Bhutanese Embassy in Brussels and the Belfius Bank, has the theme of “Healing With Happiness.” This is the largest overseas exhibition of Bhutanese artworks to date and has been put together by 68 Artists from Bhutan.

The exhibition is open for public viewing at the Belfius Bank, Rue de La Loi 82, 1040 Brussels (0900 – 1700 hrs, Monday – Friday) until the end of March 2023. Ambassador Tshering Gyaltshen Penjor, at the Royal Bhutanese Embassy in Brussels, said: “The opening of the exhibition in Brussels commemorating the Royal Wedding Anniversary is a befitting tribute to His Majesty’s profound vision for ‘art to touch people’s lives’. We are happy to be able to provide a platform for artists from Bhutan to showcase their work and we hope that this exhibition will help increase the visibility of Bhutanese art and Artists. The Embassy appreciates the enthusiasm expressed by VAST Bhutan in commissioning this exhibition.”

Asha Kama, the VAST Bhutan Founder and Curator of the exhibition, added: “The theme ‘Healing for Happiness’ is inspired by the innate Bhutanese sense of optimism and strength, which is also reflected by Bhutanese art. We invoke blessings for good fortune to imbue all our best intended and greatest endeavors. Bhutanese art, too, emerges from this sensibility. Traditional paintings and motifs signify auspiciousness and goodness, meant to bring healing wherever they are placed.”

The Royal Bhutanese Embassy (RBE) in Belgium has scheduled several curated exhibition events, mainly at the Belfius Bank and at the Ambassador’s Residence, to enable deeper engagement with the exhibition team, artists, patrons and collectors and to gain insights into the artworks. The Exhibition Director, Chimi Zangmo said that the efforts made by RBE Brusselsin organizing several events shows the commitment to build ecosystems and empower Bhutanese talents, as the country proceedsto an era of Bhutan thriving on innovation, creativity, and high value, in line with its recently launched new tourism strategy.

The VAST Bhutan exhibition team expressed their profound gratitude to Their Majestiesfor Their constant guidance and support for Bhutan’s art and artists in general, and for the invaluable support granted for this exhibition in particular. The team also thanked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the RBE Brussels team for the support rendered in executing the exhibition in Brussels, as well as to the Loden Foundation, Bhutan Foundation and many private individuals for their gracious support.

“We are blessed to receive so much love and support and this platform at an international level, which opens up opportunities for us artists. Now it is on us to express and create more,” said Pem Lham, one of the artists on the exhibition team.

The opening Reception on 5 October was attended by members of the diplomatic corps and international organizations in Brussels, and officials from the Federal Government Agencies of Belgium and the European Union. A special reception will be held on October 13, 2022, which will be attended by friends of Bhutan and supporters of VAST Bhutan.

The exhibition follows the launch of Bhutan’s new national brand, which was unveiled to celebrate the reopening of the country to tourism on September 23, 2022. ‘Brand Bhutan’ aims to capture the optimism and renewed ambition of the kingdom as it opens its doors to guests once again, as well as communicating its promise and plans for its young citizens. Bhutan’s new tagline, Believe, reflects this determined focus on the future, as well as the transformative journeys experienced by its guests. More information can be found at the new website.

The Exhibition team for “Healing for Happiness” invites all Bhutanese, friends of Bhutan, art lovers and those interested in Bhutan or simply healing art, to visit the exhibition, and to spread the word.

The silver lining to the pandemic has been the opportunity to rethink and reset tourism. As a priority sector in both Cambodia and Bhutan, both nations are moving away from mass tours and consumerism into rare, authentic, and meaningful experiences. By capturing the growing global trend in this direction, they aim to boost economic and environmental benefits and improve livelihoods.

Six Senses Bhutan

In Bhutan, high-value, low-volume tourism enables investment in transformative programs that preserve Bhutan’s cultural traditions, protect its heritage and environment, upgrade infrastructure, create opportunities for its young people, and build resilience. This model, which includes a Sustainable Development Fee, also protects the Kingdom’s natural resources, with 70% of the land remaining under forest cover.

Bhutan’s appeal is as much about its people as it is about its beauty, which is another important part of the guest experience. Visitors make deep connections with their guides, hosts, and local communities and want to come back.

Located in the Kingdom’s western and central valleys, each of the five Six Senses lodges has a unique character and interpretation of Bhutan’s spirituality, heritage, and hospitality. Six Senses Thimphu is perched on an auspicious hillside overlooking the shimmering lights of Thimphu. The “Flying Farmhouse Amidst the Rice Fields” Six Senses Punakha is a stone’s throw from the majestic Punakha Dzong. Six Senses Paro is set among stone ruins and is designed to maximize what is undoubtedly one of the most scenic settings within the Six Senses Bhutan journey. Six Senses Gangtey is in a quaint and charming area in central Bhutan, well-known as the winter residence of the black-necked cranes. Built as a forest within a forest, Six Senses Bumthang is an auspicious base to discover monuments, monasteries, and winter festivals.

Guests can visit one or any combination as part of innovative itineraries or “Khamsas”, accompanied by a private Guest Experience Maker guide and driver throughout the journey. To mark the Reopening Celebration, guests booking by October 31, 2022, will enjoy one additional complimentary night with any six-night paid stay and two extra nights with a nine-night paid stay. Landing at Paro International Airport, the 10-Night Khamsa journey offers a mix of some of Bhutan’s not-to-be-missed sites, visiting some lesser-known places along the way.

“We have a real opportunity to showcase the more hidden side of Bhutan,” says General Manager Andrew Whiffen. “From weaving through glacial valleys, rice fields, and remote mountain villages to joining Thimphu residents for circumambulations at the Memorial Chorten, trekking up to the Tiger’s Nest monastery, which dangles off a cliffside, or joining young monks for breakfast or a game of football, guests are blown away. We combine these experiences with returning to the lodge to take a dip in the pool, sample local culinary delicacies, and visit Six Senses Spa for a pampering treatment.”

Six Senses Krabey Island, Cambodia

Post-pandemic recovery in Cambodia will rely in part on a business-enabling environment for higher-value travel and tourism. Beyond the Angkor complex and Siem Reap, Cambodia is also endowed with beautiful coastlines, important conservation areas, and a significant number of heritage and cultural sites, many of which are easily accessible from Six Senses Krabey Island. With the mainland reception just a 10-minute drive from Sihanouk International Airport, it is then a short 15-minute water transfer to the resort to enjoy cultural, wellness, sporting, and signature dining experiences.

The resort will reopen on December 2 with a renewed focus on community-based experiences to interact with locals, nature, and wildlife. Guests booking the Festive Getaway by November 30 will save 20% on the Best Flexible Rate.

The 40 spacious pool villas offer a private island hideaway feel without forgoing guestroom amenities, guest services, and a spa, which crowns the island and offers a wide range of holistic rejuvenation therapies. Days are as hands-on as guests like. A visit to the organic garden on the mainland includes a pick-your-own lunch. The Hook, Line, and Catch experience starts with an ethical fishing line in hand. A Spice Trail trip to the Kampot meanders past paddy fields and houses on stilts to an authentic pepper-infused lunch at La Plantation. Time-honoured tips can be acquired during a Khmer Cooking Class.

There is a range of villas, from the Hideaway (perfect for two) to the Ocean (elevated for the views). Groups of friends or families can stay together in the Oceanfront duplex, which sleeps six and extends over two floors to maximize privacy. Set on the west side of the island, The Beach Retreat sleeps five and, as its name suggests, not only offers a private sundeck for lounging and alfresco dining but also direct access to a private beach cove. The toughest part about this one is leaving it.

“From December to February, the slightly cooler temperatures, low humidity, and long periods of sunshine make it an ideal time to visit,” says General Manager Ateeb Shrestha. “During the dry season, you can enjoy morning yoga on the rooftop pavilion or take a spin around the island jungle gym, visit temples, go on a hike or tour, or simply relax and sunbathe during the day and enjoy our boardwalk dining or movie nights under the stars at night. The Experiences Center offers a wide range of on-island and on-water activities within the resort, plus boat excursions to the surrounding islands. Teens will love the Double-Dip Hangout, which is adjacent to the horizon-edge pool and serves house-made gelatos, and children aged 4 to 12 are kept busy at the kids’ club.”

On September 23, 2022, Bhutan reopened its borders, welcoming guests back to the kingdom after more than two years.  At the same time, the country has revealed a new national identity that demonstrates an evolution and a spirit of optimism, destined to inspire pride and spark the imaginations of citizens and visitors alike.

To mark the reopening of the kingdom and to look to the future, Bhutan created a whole new identity for the country to inspire a new vision of the future to its citizens. The result reflects Bhutan’s character and landscapes, history and ambitions: bold, vivid, richly storied and utterly distinctive – rebranding it for a new future, both for its people and its guests who are seeking a different travel experience.

Bhutan is a Buddhist kingdom, perched high in the Himalayas and renowned for its mountains and monasteries, rich biodiversity, pristine forests, rivers, glacial lakes, waterfalls and striking natural beauty. Most importantly, it is loved by visitors for the welcome that its people extend to them. The only country in the world that uses the happiness of its people as a guiding principle that underpins everything, Bhutan may be one of the very few carbon-negative countries in the world (in 2021, Bhutan sequestered 9.4 million tonnes of carbon against its emission capacity of 3.8 million tonnes).

Few foreigners have experienced Bhutan’s extraordinary nature and culture for themselves. This small nation of only 800,000 people has long practised a policy of ‘high value, low volume’ tourism to protect and preserve its peace, its sacred places and its wildernesses. Like many countries, Bhutan closed its borders in March 2020 in response to Covid. During this extended period of closure, the nation reconsidered its relationship with tourism and developed new policies and plans for the country’s advancement – in particular, for how it can invest in creating sustainable opportunities for its young people. As it reopens to embrace visitors once more, one of the notable changes is the increase in the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF), a daily contribution made by visitors towards Bhutan’s development. The funds raised by the SDF will play an invaluable role in supporting a range of social, environmental and cultural initiatives, as well as Bhutan’s wider aspirations.

It’s these plans and programmes that Bhutan’s brand – and new campaign – is built upon. It offers a rallying cry to believe – in the nation’s capabilities, its values, its global contribution, its responsibilities, and its future.

To respond with sensitivity and substance to the brief, the team involved spoke to hundreds of people from Thimphu to Lunana, Punakha and Bumthang to Radi. Conveying the rich tapestry of Bhutan’s living culture, which seamlessly weaves together the ancient, the contemporary, and the visionary, quickly became a priority for the new brand. In particular, the younger Bhutanese generation was centred on the brand’s development, ensuring that the new identity reflects their role as key stakeholders in Bhutan’s future.

A vital element of the strategy was to create a new graphic identity for Bhutan—a contemporary interpretation of the country’s heritage that would offer a pathway towards the future. It draws on the Bhutanese flag’s vibrant yellow and orange, with further colour palette inspiration from nature — the cypress green of the forests that cover 70% of the country, the blue of Bhutan’s national flower, the Himalayan blue poppy, and a soft black referencing the natural soot from the fires burning in the country’s hearths.

Using these colours, a completely new graphic identity system was created, which draws on traditional Bhutanese iconographies such as hand-painted architectural decoration, mythical animals, folklore and symbolism – all reimagined with boldness, sharpness and dynamism. The vibrant brand identity has already been rolled out across the tourism sector to great acclaim. Soon it will also be seen across government organisations, official websites, National Day celebrations, and even a new postage stamp.

Bhutan’s new tourism policy is part of a nationwide transformation, from the civil service to education and financial reforms. The changes are geared toward forging fresh pathways and creating long-term opportunities for forthcoming generations. The development of the new national brand goes beyond simply creating a new identity but aims to leverage the power of branding to connect Bhutan, and the stories it wants to tell, with a global audience.

Julien Beaupre Ste-Marie, Managing Director, MMBP & Associates, the branding agency involved, says: “Working closely with the Kingdom of Bhutan to create its new national brand has been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me and for our team. We are one piece of the puzzle in a much larger era of transformation—it truly feels like history in the making. The learnings we made working alongside such an inspired group of Bhutanese people and international stakeholders will influence how we work for years to come. Similarly, as the world wakes up to the damaging effects of unrestricted mass tourism and tries to find ways to mitigate climate change, this small and mighty country has many lessons to share with the world. Our hope is that our work and this brand helps to carry this vision forward.”

Dorji Dhradhul, the Director General of the Tourism Council of Bhutan, added: “We are so excited that our tourism reopening is timed together with the launch of the new Nation Brand.  Inspired by our new brand, and with a renewed focus on our time-tested high value low volume approach to tourism, we aim to offer an elevated experience to all guests who visit Bhutan, while at the same time creating well-paying and professional jobs for our citizens. We like to believe that Bhutan can offer that space and place for guests to reconnect with themselves, with Bhutanese people, and with the world at large. We are happy to welcome you to experience – Bhutan Believe!”

Carissa Nimah, Chief Marketing Officer, Tourism Council of Bhutan, concluded: “Bhutan is already an incredibly alluring destination, yet it has so many layers to be revealed and shared. It is a huge honour and a pleasure to be part of this transformation, and to help facilitate tourism as a strategic driver of positive change and growth across the country. The new Bhutan brand is exciting – it’s so different from anything else. It’s so vibrant and fun, yet also captures the inspiration, mystique, spirituality, adventure and energy of Bhutanese culture. I look forward to promoting the new brand and tourism strategy globally.”

At a special trade event held in Bangkok yesterday, participants learnt first-hand how the Himalayan country plans to protect itself from over-tourism.

In his presentation at the Sukosol Hotel in Bangkok in front of a large audience of invited guests from Thailand’s travel community, HE Kinzang Dorji, Ambassador of Bhutan in Thailand, unveiled a new tourism strategy. Announcing the Kingdom of Bhutan reopens its borders to international guests following the COVID-19 pandemic. The reopening is underpinned by transformations in three key areas: enhancements to its sustainable development policies, infrastructure upgrades, and the elevation of the guest experience. His Excellency also introduced the country’s new marketing campaign Bhutan Believe

Distinguished guests from Thailand’s travel industry with HE Ambassador Kinzang Dorji

“Bhutan’s noble policy of high-value, low-volume tourism has existed since we started welcoming guests to our country in 1974. But its intent and spirit were watered down over the years without us even realising it. Therefore, as we reset as a nation after this pandemic and officially open our doors to visitors today, we are reminding ourselves about the essence of the policy, the values and merits that have defined us for generations,” said H.E. Dr Lotay Tshering, Prime Minister of Bhutan in his global message issued this week from Bhutan.

Reopening to tourism for the first time since March 2020, the land of the thunder dragon will once again invite visitors to discover its awe-inspiring landscapes, nurturing people and incomparable spirit from 23 September 2022. Immersing guests in the mystical essence of the nation, COMO Hotels and Resorts invites inquisitive travellers to rediscover its two luxury lodges, COMO Uma Paro and COMO Uma Punakha, with a new seven-night experience incorporating the many jewels of Bhutan.

Taking guests on a journey to the heart of the ethereal land, the Jewels of Bhutan itinerary incorporates spectacular drives, unique nature walks and fascinating monastery visits, including a hike through the verdant Paro Valley to reach the Taktsang ‘Tiger’s Nest’ Monastery, one of Bhutan’s most important pieces of architecture. Highlights include the chance to engage with young monks at Chorten Ningpo, a 17th-century educational institution; walking across farmhouses to reach Chimmi Lhakhang, an ancient fertility temple; and enjoying spectacular views of the Himalayas from the Dochu La mountain pass.

The first night is spent at COMO Uma Paro, nestled above the emerald Paro Valley, overlooking rice paddies and ancient monasteries, where rooms combine traditional Bhutanese craftsmanship with modern amenities. A signature treatment is included at the hotel’s COMO Shambhala Retreat, home to two bathhouses and a large indoor pool facing the mountains across the valley. Transferring to COMO Uma Punakha for the following three nights, the property offers intimate lodge-style accommodation with views of the Mo Chu River, local, seasonally led dining experiences at Bukhari restaurant and unrivalled access to the best of the Himalayan Kingdom. After exploring Punakha, guests will return to Paro for three additional nights to complete their journey.

Marking the beginning of an unforgettable journey, the Jewels of Bhutan also includes a traditional butter lamp ceremony, a spiritual blessing which represents the eradication of darkness and ignorance with wisdom and light. A deeply spiritual destination, Bhutan’s population uplifts and encourages positivity for all visitors. On the nation’s spirituality, COMO’s long-serving activity guide, Ugyen Dendup, notes:

“Folklore has a very special significance among Bhutanese families. We share stories from generation to generation. It is widely believed that yetis exist in Brigdungla in Bumthang, as well as magical lakes such as Chumphu, or the Floating Goddess Lake.”

Visitors to Bhutan are enchanted by the country’s unique pace and peaceful rhythm, protected by the Gross Domestic Happiness concept that guides the government and measures the collective wellbeing of the population. In line with the philosophy’s core pillar of ecological sustainability, Bhutan is the only carbon-negative nation in the world, with 70% of land covered by forests. COMO Bhutan is committed to operating sustainably, sourcing produces from a local Bhutanese farmer and its own vegetable garden, while also contributing to community upliftment: COMO Uma Paro recently helped a female entrepreneur set up the country’s first prayer flag printer and shop.

This year will also see the long-awaited opening of the Trans-Bhutan Trail, connecting 250 miles of valleys and districts along centuries-old pathways, much of which can be explored during COMO’s Jewels of Bhutan itinerary. Later in the year, acclaimed photographer Michael Turek, will lead a Himalayan film photography retreat (9-16 November) as part of the brand’s series of COMO Journeys, venturing into the remote reaches of the Kingdom to capture its natural and cultural beauty.

Bhutan will be reopening its borders to tourists from 23 September 2022. But it will do so with a renewed focus on the sustainability of the sector. According to Tourism Council of Bhutan, the Kingdom’s tourism sector will be undergoing a revamp with focus on three key areas. They are infrastructure and services, the travel experiences of tourists, and the sector’s environmental impact.

“COVID-19 has allowed us to reset – to rethink how the sector can be best structured and operated, so that it not only benefits Bhutan economically, but socially as well, while keeping carbon footprints low. In the long run, our goal is to create high-value experiences for visitors, and well-paying and professional jobs for our citizens,” said Tandi Dorji, Foreign Minister of Bhutan and Chairperson of the Tourism Council of Bhutan.

Among the slew of changes are revised standards for service providers, including hotels, guides, tour operators, and drivers, which will soon be subjected to a more robust certification process before they can engage tourists. Employees will be required to participate in skilling and reskilling programmes, where necessary, to boost service quality.

Amid the intensifying threat of climate change, Bhutan will also be stepping up its efforts to keep the country carbon-negative and a green destination for tourists. The nation is keenly vulnerable to the effects of climate change, such as frequent rain and floods.

As such, it will be raising the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of USD65 per person per night for tourists to USD200, which will go towards activities that promote carbon-neutral tourism and building a more sustainable tourism sector. This includes offsetting the carbon footprint of tourists and upskilling workers in the sector. Indian tourists will continue to pay a previously stipulated fee, which will be revised later.

At the same time, the Minimum Daily Package Rate (MDPR) will be removed. The rate refers to the minimum sum paid by all tourists for an all-inclusive package tour to Bhutan. The MDPR has in the past often limited the tourist experience, as travelers could only choose packaged tours provided by tour operators. Going forward, tourists will have the flexibility to engage service providers directly and pay for their services accordingly. The fee changes came into effect on 20 June 2022.

Internationally renowned for its pursuit of Gross National Happiness, the tiny Himalayan nation of Bhutan will soon reopen the fully-restored Trans Bhutan Trail, just as the world celebrates International Day of Happiness on 20 March 2022. Bhutan, the world’s first carbon-negative country, now welcomes citizens and international travellers alike to explore its rich culture and heritage in an authentic and sustainable way by trekking the Trail.

The Notion of Gross National Happiness

Nestled between India and China in the mighty Himalayas, Bhutan is home to just 750,000 people living in its 38,000 square kilometres of land. But yet this small nation is world-leading in terms of its peace and its serenity. Bhutan aspires to be one of the happiest countries on earth, thanks to its policies of Gross National Happiness (GNH), by which the primacy of national happiness is emphasized over more traditional markers of economic performance. GNH was first promulgated several decades ago by His Majesty the Fourth King of Bhutan, who strongly believed that the happiness of his people was a strong indicator of progressive development. GNH is a more holistic approach to measuring Bhutan’s development and strongly suggests that the development of society thrives best when material aspects are balanced with the non-material.

According to Kent Schroeder, Executive Director of the Bhutan Canada Foundation, the organization which led the restoration of the Trans Bhutan Trail in partnership with the Royal Government of Bhutan: “Gross National Happiness is all about creating the enabling conditions for people to choose happiness. Such conditions refer to available policies and programs that ensure people can be educated, enjoy access to healthcare, have meaningful employment, live within a flourishing environment and preserved culture, have an effective and transparent government, and more.”

Restoring the Trans Bhutan Trail

For hundreds of years, the historic Trans Bhutan Trail was the only way for pilgrims, messengers, armies, and traders to travel and communicate across the country. It crosses nine Dzongkhags (districts), 28 gewogs (village blocks), two municipalities and one national park.

With the vision of his Majesty the Fifth King and the support of the Tourism Council of Bhutan, the Bhutan Canada Foundation led efforts to restore the 250-mile Trans Bhutan Trail, making it accessible for the first time in over 60 years. More than 900 local workers were deployed during the pandemic to work on the ancient route, rebuilding 18 major bridges, 10,000 stairs and 250 miles of trail.

The restoration of the Trans Bhutan Trail strongly echoes the four pillars of GNH: Good Governance, Sustainable Socio-Economic Development, Preservation and Promotion of Culture, and Environmental Conservation. This community-based project has created new socio-economic opportunities locally, contributing significantly towards the sustainable livelihoods of communities residing along the Trail—and with 400 historic and culturally significant sites identified, the Trail plays a major role in preserving culture through connecting generations as a living experiential classroom to share centuries’ worth of knowledge, stories, and history. It also protects the country’s delicate ecosystems, encouraging clean water, fresh air and diverse flora and fauna across Bhutan.

Sam Blyth, Chair of the Bhutan Canada Foundation and lead donor to the Trail says: “Trans Bhutan Trail is committed to enhancing this ancient route out of respect to the ancestors, as a gift to Bhutan, and with a vision to enrich the lives of future generations. It complements Bhutan’s guiding GNH principles insofar as it allows people across Bhutan to rediscover their history, engage with nature, understand ecosystems, enjoy good physical and mental health, engage in local economic development, and reconnect with other local communities.”

Exceptional Trekking Experiences

From April 2022, a limited number of permits will be issued to international travellers, inviting them to walk, run, or mountain bike one of the world’s most beautiful, culturally rich and least explored trails for the first time in 60 years. Steeped in heritage and uniquely Bhutanese, the Trans Bhutan Trail gives travellers ample opportunity to learn more about Bhutan’s unique GNH approach to development as well as to experience an authentic piece of happiness the Bhutanese way.

More than half of Bhutan’s territory, including many sections of the Trans Bhutan Trail, are designated as protected areas and biological corridors. The Trail meanders through pristine virgin forests, offering panoramic views of soaring Himalayan peaks and exclusive access to many parts of Bhutan seldom visited by foreigners—truly the perfect antidote for those travellers experiencing pandemic fatigue or burnout. It offers a purposeful way for travellers to reconnect with nature and to take time for meditation and self-reflection.

Trans Bhutan Trail can arrange all aspects of guided walking and biking on the trail on a not-for-profit basis, with all proceeds to be reinvested into Trail sustainability, education and community projects. Each international guest will receive a one-year free Trans Bhutan Trail membership, as well as having a tree planted on their behalf. As a spiritual nation, the Trail welcomes both Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike with specially created itineraries that encourage reconnection with the country’s sacred and religious heritage.

After extensive restoration, Bhutan will reopen the historic and sacred Trans Bhutan Trail for the first time in 60 years. The trail will be officially inaugurated by the King of Bhutan, whose vision was to restore the ancient route for tourism, adventure and connection.

From April 2022, international tourists will be able to walk the trail for the first time. The move will provide much needed economic benefits to rural communities along the way.

Community tourism pioneer, G Adventures, has been selected by the Bhutan Canada Foundation, the non-profit that led the restoration of the trail, as the first group adventure operator when the trail launches to the public. Two new Active trekking itineraries are now available to book with G Adventures, an 11-day Camp the Trans Bhutan Trail trip, which features camping and homestays, and a 12-day Highlights of the Trans Bhutan Trail itinerary with accommodation in homestays, locally-owned guest houses and hotels.

Yves Marceau, Vice President- product, G Adventures, said the operator’s two tours focus on trekking specially selected parts of the 403-km (250-mile) trail and connecting with local people to learn about Bhutanese life and culture, thus combining active travel and cultural immersion with the benefits of community tourism.

“We’re honoured to be working with the Bhutan Canada Foundation and the Trans Bhutan Trail to launch this newly restored route in magical Bhutan. It’s a country we’ve run tours in for more than a decade and have long admired for its commitment to the happiness of its people and sustainable way of life, which are both philosophies that align with our values as an organization,” said Marceau.

Sam Blyth, chair of the Bhutan Canada Foundation and lead donor for the Trans Bhutan Trail, says G Adventures was an obvious partner to help relaunch the trail given the company’s long history and success running small group tours and giving back to destinations through its commitment to community tourism.

Less than six months after the opening of the Traditional Birdwatching Bridge in Gangtey, Six Senses Bhutan has opened its fifth and final lodge, Six Senses Bumthang. This opening marks the completion of a circuit that will take guests on a journey across the western and central valleys of the kingdom.

Set in pine forest on a hillside and above a bubbling, trout-filled stream, the lodge is referred to as the ‘Forest Within A Forest’. Here, the trees came first, which is why the accommodations were built around them rather than clearing them. In total there are eight suites, featuring spacious balconies and calming forest views across the valley.

The five-lodge, five-valley Six Senses khamsa or ‘journey’ in Bhutan combines the brand’s commitment to wellness, sustainability and out-of-the-ordinary experiences paired with the country’s rich culture, warm hospitality and omni-present spirituality.

As the gateway to the east and the site of some of the country’s earliest settlements, Bumthang is considered as Bhutan’s spiritual heartland and is home to some of its most ancient monasteries and sacred monuments. This region is known for its four valleys, covered in pristine forests and meandering rivers, dotted with quaint villages, lush pastures and farming fields.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) co-organised the first ever road journey from Bangkok to Thimphu in Bhutan – the ‘Bhutan-Thailand Friendship Drive – Connecting Peoples of the Two Kingdoms by Land’. The epic eight-day journey set off from Bangkok on 21 June and covered 3,000 km when it arrived in the Bhutanese capital of Thimphu on 28 June. The route followed the Myanmar-Thailand-India trilateral highway through the three countries before entering Bhutan through Phuentsholing on the Bhutan-India border.

The ‘Bhutan-Thailand Friendship Drive – Connecting Peoples of the Two Kingdoms by Land’ is one of the flagship events commemorating the 30th anniversary in 2019 of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Bhutan. It is also in celebration of the auspicious royal coronation in Thailand and reflects both countries’ reverence of the monarchy institution, with Bhutan also having a king.

Chattan Kunjara Na Ayudhya, deputy governor for international marketing for Asia and the South Pacific, TAT said this event aims to further strengthen relations on all levels between the two kingdoms. “Along with people-to-people linkages, trade and commerce, this also includes tourism. Thailand is already a main gateway for tourists flying to Bhutan and it is hoped the Bhutan-Thailand Friendship Drive will help to open up new road links. Together the two destinations have much to offer under the ‘Two Kingdoms, One Destination’ concept,” he said.

Around 21 participants took part in the ‘Bhutan-Thailand Friendship Drive – Connecting Peoples of the Two Kingdoms by Land’, comprising officials from the Royal Thai Government, Royal Bhutanese Embassy, Thairung Union Car Public Company and two youth representatives – one each from Thailand and Bhutan. This event was co-organised by TAT and the Royal Bhutanese Embassy and Thairung, while Druk Air (Royal Bhutan Airlines) and DusitD2 Bhutan were sponsors.

The 2019 Virtuoso Luxe Report surveyed its affiliated advisors to discover where, why and how families are travelling this summer.

The research shows that the lists of hot family destinations and unconventional getaways are heavily influenced by the trends that dominate family travel decisions these days, many of which are in line with overall trends in the travel industry.

Data suggests that the top trend is active or adventure trips. Families are also taking more multigenerational trips. Beach resort stays and celebration travel continues to be appealing. Rounding out the top five trends is the growing popularity if touring, both private and guided journeys.

The Virtuoso Luxe Report found that new destinations are a top motivator to travellers and so it’s no surprise that these destinations are holding more allure to family travellers. Iceland has topped the list for three years in a row and remains a major travel trend alongside the Galapagos Islands and Antarctica.

The post Indian tourism sector to surge towards $48 billion by 2020 and ten million jobs by 2028, reports WTTC appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Brand TD.

It has been revealed today that India can expect to look forward to adding a further ten million jobs to the travel and tourism industry in the next ten years. The announcement came as part of the World Travel & Tourism Council’s (WTTC) annual Economic Impact Research report, published this morning.

As the seventh largest market in the travel industry, the sector is expected to grow by up to 11-11.5 per cent to $48 billion by 2020, with domestic air travel leading the charge, And the WTTC report predicts that the number of jobs dependent on travel will rise from 42.9 million in 2018 to 52.3 million in 2028.

Gloria Guevara (main picture), president & CEO of the WTTC, said “Travel & Tourism creates jobs, drives economic growth and helps build better societies. This is particularly clear in India which is forecast to be one of the fastest-growing tourism economies in the world over the next decade adding 10 million jobs and hundreds of millions of dollars to the economy by 2028.”

Guevara went on to say how this increase comes because of government initiatives to push the international appeal of the nations as a holiday hot spot.

“There are some extremely proactive steps which have been introduced by the Government to increase the number of international visitors and to position itself as a destination of choice among travellers worldwide. Particularly, we recognise the introduction of e-Visa for 163 countries and the launch of Incredible India 2.0 Campaign with major improvement in the marketing and PR strategy.

“Looking to the future, India can strategically lead travel facilitation within the SAARC (India Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives. Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka) region by introducing a standard technological solution, modern technology and biometrics. This will enhance the travel and tourism economies in the region”. She added.

Recent changes to India’s GST system have been popular but Miss Guevara believes the Indian Government could do more to boost the travel industry:

“While the country-wide change to GST is a welcome move, the Indian Government could consider looking again at the level of GST in the hospitality sector to make it more competitive with other countries in the region.

The WTTC president closed her comments with a warning against complacency: “We would also urge the public and private sectors to work together to prepare crisis management plans, so the country is fully prepared with proper systems and processes in place, that can be deployed, should there be a crisis.”

India’s Ministry of Railways has said that a series of studies have already been conducted into the new lines.

The most challenging of these projects would be to Bhutan, which does not currently have any railway lines. But Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) says that feasibility studies have been conducted for the project. Bhutan borders the Indian states of Sikkim, West Bengal, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

For Nepal, work is already underway on an 18.6km cross-border railway line connecting the Indian city of Jogbani, in the state of Bihar, with the Nepalese city of Biratnagar.

But the most extensive connectivity is likely to be between India and Bangladesh. NFP is reportedly planning a new cross-border link to Bangladesh from Agartala, the capital of the remote Indian state of Tripura. This will form part of the Trans-Asian Railway network and will significantly reduce the overland travelling time between northeast India and the rest of the country.

For example, the existing rail journey between Agartala and Kolkata, which circles around Bangladesh, is 1,613km. But this will be slashed by around 900km following the launch of the new line.

The Unique Tourism Collection has been appointed as the Himalayan kingdom’s new Australian rep, and will now handle sales, marketing and media activity aimed at driving more Australian business to Bhutan.

Bhutan said it would focus on Australia as a key market in 2016, adding that tourism is now “the government’s top priority”.

“The royal government of Bhutan recognises that tourism, in affording the opportunity to travel, can help in promoting understanding among people and building closer ties of friendship based on appreciation and respect for different cultures and lifestyles,” the Tourism Council stated.

Welcome to the country that officially recognises Gross National Happiness over GDP

Taktshang Goemba (Tiger's Nest Monastery), Monastery, Bhutan.
Taktshang Goemba (Tiger’s Nest Monastery), Monastery, Bhutan.

How is Bhutan performing in terms of UK visitor numbers? What are the projections for 2015?

Bhutan is performing well in terms of UK visitor numbers. We have seen an increase in British visitors between 2013 (2,291 visitors) and 2014 (2,680 visitors) and we are expecting a 16% increase in visitor numbers for 2015.

Who visits Bhutan from the UK and why? What trends are you noting?

Bhutan is suitable for a number of different travellers, from adventure minded people looking to explore the Himalayan mountains throughout our Kingdom to culture enthusiasts looking to experience Bhutanese way of life, our traditions, history and temples. It is a unique destination and, as a nation we collectively work to ensure that we maintain the environment and offer a unique travel experience for all visitors.

The Tourism Council of Bhutan has noticed a consistent rise in visitor numbers from the United Kingdom, particularly from seasoned travellers looking to explore a destination that is “off the beaten track”.

What trade initiatives are helping to driving demand?

As a small nation we try to showcase the beauty of Bhutan globally. We participate in global tourism fairs, such as WTM, ITB, JATTA and TITF to name a few. During these trade shows we try to meet with as many of our tourism partners as possible to update them on news and developments from Bhutan. We also participate in advertising campaigns to draw consumer awareness towards Bhutan.

Damcho Rinzin.
Damcho Rinzin.

What other factors are helping put Bhutan on the tourism map for UK visitors?

Bhutan’s tourism offerings are the main draw for British visitors. Our cultural offerings are unique in the fact that we still retain many of our traditions and it is very common to see locals still dressed in their traditional outfits while performing day-to-day tasks. Another draw is our trekking and adventure offerings. With many treks across the country ranging from three to 21 days long, there is something on offer for all abilities.

What niche markets does Bhutan suit and how will you raise awareness amongst these groups?

Bhutan is suitable for the following groups:

  1. DINKS – due to the digital uptake by this group, we target them through social networking natives and online advertising
  2. Seasoned Travellers & well educated – A large proportion of the travellers to Bhutan from the UK are over 45 years old. They are seasoned travellers who we target through a number of TV, print and online advertising campaigns
  3. Wellness Travellers – Bhutan is perfect for travellers looking to recoup and rejuvenate. A number of our luxury hotels offer brilliant spa and retreat activities as part of a relaxing itinerary taking travellers to the many temples across the country. We work with our tour operator partners to sell wellness related activities/packages to UK travellers
  4. Spiritual travellers – Spirituality spans all aspects of Bhutanese life and thus the destinations offers a fantastic getaway for those seeking spiritual enlightenment. Many visitors can book with a tour operator to spend some time with a local monk to learn meditation and discovery.

What new tourism infrastructure is in place in Bhutan?

In 2013, Bhutan Airlines was launched offering flights to Bhutan. The privately owned airline has flights from Delhi, Bangkok, Kathmandu and Kolkata to Paro International Airport. Additionally in 2011 we opened the domestic airport in Bumthang in Central Bhutan offering twice a week flights with Druk Air.

Our Eastern and Southern Bhutan Airports (Trashigang Airport and Gelephu Airport) are currently under renovation to further improve airlinks across the country.

2015 has also seen a number of new luxury hotels open across the country. Two of note are the Le Meridian, Thimphu and Aman, Punakha.

If you could give five top selling points for Bhutan, what would they be?

  1. The idea of the country prioritising Gross National Happiness over GDP
  2. Exotic and unique culture
  3. Pristine natural beauty
  4. The perception of Bhutan being largely undiscovered
  5. The perception of Bhutan being Trekkers’ paradise being located in the Himalayan range

WildChina is launching its first itineraries in Bhutan.

The adventure travel operator has developed three trips in the Himalayan kingdom, ranging from five to seven days.

The ‘Land of the Thunder Dragon’ includes trips to the Punakha Valley and Tiger’s Nest hanging monastery, while the longer ‘Kingdom in the Clouds’ also features a visit to Gangtey. The ‘Druk Path’ is a hiking adventure that takes guests to heights of almost 4,000 metres above sea-level, including “deluxe camping” accommodation.

“The first trip WildChina undertook was in the Tibetan region of Yunnan so ever since the beginning, I have held a fascination for the Himalayan regions. This compelled me to explore further into Himalayan cultures, in Tibet, Nepal and Bhutan,” explained the company’s founder & CEO, Mei Zhang.

“Bhutan may be the last frontier… it is the sort of wild and inaccessible place that fits perfectly in our WildChina Adventure collection – journeys that focus on enabling discovery in lesser explored lands.”

The Bhutan launch comes as WildChina celebrates its 15th anniversary.

“Fifteen is a significant landmark for us,” Ms Zhang added. “We’re proud of how far we’ve come, but what excites us even more is how far there is to go and the possibilities yet to be explored. Expect more exiting new things to come out of WildChina this year – new destinations, new initiatives, new adventures.”

Bhutan continued to emerge on the Asian tourism scene in 2014, as the country recorded a double-digit increase in visitor arrivals.

The Himalayan kingdom attracted 133,480 international travellers last year, and while that may be only a small fraction of its neighbours, it marks a 15% jump compared to 2013. Of this total, more than half (68,081) were Indian travellers.

And Bhutan is aiming to drive even more visitor arrivals this year, following the launch of the ‘Visit Bhutan 2015’ campaign. Initiated by the Tourism Council of Bhutan, the tourism drive is running under the theme ‘Celebrate Happiness’, and is being promoted in key source markets including India and Southeast Asia.

“We believe in a sustainable approach to growth and development of the tourism industry in Bhutan,” explained Damcho Rinzim, head of the Tourism Council of Bhutan’s marketing & promotion division.  “Our destination offers tremendous potential as an indigenous industry with clear comparative advantages which are compelling reasons to promote Bhutan as a high-end tourist destination.

“International travellers to Bhutan are lured by the myriad of offerings that include heritage, culture, natural beauty and a range of quality world class hospitality and tourism industry,” he added.

Bhutan’s national carrier, Drukair, serves as the main international link for the landlocked, mountainous country, offering flights to cities including Bangkok, Delhi, Dhaka, Kathmandu, Kolkata, Mumbai and Singapore, while Bhutan Airlines (Tashi Air) flies daily from Kolkata to Paro.

Meanwhile several international hotel groups, including Starwood and Best Western, are planning to launch hotels in Bhutan.

Wandering the World was officially launched this week by Glenyce Johnson, former managing director at Peregrine Adventures, and Jane Reed, Peregrine’s ex marketing director, and will undertake its first trip to Sri Lanka at the end of January. Other destinations for Wandering the World will include India, Nepal and Bhutan, as well as Spain and Portugal.

“Our inspiration for launching Wandering the World has been fuelled by our passion for discovering new places, our curiosity of other cultures and the interesting people we meet,” explained Ms Johnson. “Our appetite for travel is endless, re-visiting the places we love and venturing to corners of the globe less explored.”

Destinations Wandering the World is focusing on initially are the pilgrim-walking trails of Spain and Portugal, plus trekking in Nepal and Bhutan and touring in India and Sri Lanka.

And the company’s founders have plenty of experience; between them, the pair has travelled to 100 countries across all seven continents, and Ms Johnson once completed the Camino de Santiago – an 800km pilgrimage walk across France and Spain.

The airline will commence commercial operations between Paro and Mumbai from 1 May 2014. On the Mumbai-Paro sector, the flight will depart Mumbai at 1110 and touch into Paro at 1440.

According to chief executive officer of Drukair, Tandin Jamtso, “Drukair is delighted to launch its maiden service to Mumbai, one of the busiest cities of India. By offering this connection to passengers, we are confident that this new route will become immensely popular with our travellers.”

The aircraft will be configured with 16 seats in business class and 12 seats in economy class. The Tourism Council of Bhutan (TCB) along with few other stakeholders of the country will conduct a three-city road show in Delhi, Mumbai and Calcutta. The TCB is keen to promote Bhutan in the Indian market given the proximity of the two countries, and is optimistic about tourists experiencing and enjoying Bhutan.

“The TCB is confident that the number of Indian and expat travellers to the Kingdom will sharply increase from the west and south India with the introduction of these flights as passengers can now inter-change at Mumbai for a direct flight. The launch of operations will also further enhance the Kingdom of Bhutan image as a destination for luxury and special occasion segments such as wedding, honeymoon, anniversaries and other celebratory occasions,” said Damcho Rinzin, International Travel Trade and PR Manager for the TCB.

A new all-suite boutique resort will open its doors in Bhutan later this year.

Set in the Punakha Valley, approximately 70km from Bhutan’s capital Thimpu, the Dhensa Punakha will offer just 24 suites plus a dining room, reading lounge and spa with two treatment rooms, steam room and sauna.

“We are extremely pleased to announce the launch of our first Dhensa property in Punakha,” said Dr Steven Chua, chairman of Dhensa Boutique Resorts, which is a subsidiary of Hong Kong’s Rykadan Hospitality Management.

“Our guiding values at Dhensa are simplicity and the natural curiosity of youth. We felt that Bhutan was absolutely the right place to introduce our brand given its acknowledged status as the source of inner purity and peace as well as its culture, which cherishes ‘Gross National Happiness’ over ‘Gross National Product’.”

Flanked by pine forests, the new resort overlooks the Punakha River and surrounding rice fields. The 24 suites are set in six separate cottages, and all have private balconies overlooking the surrounding landscape. The resort will have a sustainable ethos, with organic cuisine in the restaurant and spa treatments using natural ingredients.

Dhensa Punakha is due to open in March 2014.

Welcoming a new carrier flying into Kolkata, Travel Agents Federation of India, Chairman (East), Anil Punjabi said, “The carrier would be a boost to tourists keen to explore Bhutan. With just one flight to the Himalayan kingdom at present, few seats are available and they are all very expensive at present. Hopefully, the scenario will change now.”

Asian luxury resort operator, Six Senses, is embarking on a global expansion plan.

The Bangkok-based company has announced its intention to develop five new-build properties across five countries in the next three years. The new additions will include the brand’s debut in the Western Hemisphere, with properties already under development in St Lucia, the Dominican Republic and Colombia, plus its first resort in Bhutan and the opening of a new property in China’s Sichuan province, the Six Senses Qing Cheng Mountain. All new properties are expected to be open by the end of 2016.

“Six Senses Hotels, Resorts & Spas is positioned for exciting growth into new markets, reaching new audiences and creating new experiences for our guests,” said Neil Jacobs, the company’s chief executive officer.

Supporting the expansion, Six Senses is introducing a new online identity, with a new website expected to launch in early March. Through this website and other branding exercises, the company is aiming to highlight its reputation for sustainable, environmentally-friendly and healthy travel.

“There is a strong and organic emphasis at Six Senses to our commitment to sustainability. It is part of the brand DNA and influences aspects of the business ranging from materials used in daily operations to how we engage with the local community,” Jacobs added.

Six Senses was originally founded by Sonu Shivdasani, but last year the company was bought by US-based Pegasus Capital Advisors. It currently operates 29 spas and nine resort properties in the Maldives, Oman, Thailand, Vietnam and Jordan. Apart from the five new properties announced today, the company also plans to launch a new property in Vietnam, the Six Senses Saigon River, which is currently under construction.

Bhutan’s Paro International Airport

Bhutan’s national carrier Drukair has formed a new partnership to offer private jet services in the Himalayan kingdom.

The deal with Chapman Freeborn will see the charter specialist provide private jets and flying permits to operate charters to Bhutan, as well as certified navigators – essential when negotiating the country’s mountainous airports.

“One of the most exclusive and sought-after travel destinations”

Chapman Freeborn’s global sales and marketing director, Alex Berry, said: “We’re honoured to be working in partnership with Drukair in this venture. Chapman Freeborn is forever linked with opening up new private jet markets, and as one of the most exclusive and sought-after travel destinations in the world we’re excited to be launching this service,” Berry said.

“The only airline that links Bhutan to the outside world”

Welcoming the partnership, Drukair’s general manager, Tshering Penjore, added; “Drukair has been providing reliable and safe transportation for the last 30 years and as the only airline that links Bhutan to the outside world, the challenge to fulfill diverse air transportation needs has become critical.

“The partnership with Chapman Freeborn will enable us to use the wide and global resources and portfolio of aircraft for private charters. Further we expect to build a strong and readily available access to improve search and rescue and emergency air operations within Bhutan.”

The private jet service will be based at Bhutan’s Paro International Airport, which is located in a deep valley, 2,200 metres above sea level. With surrounding peaks rising above 5,500 metres, it is considered one of the most challenging airports in the world for take-offs and landings, with only a limited number of pilots certified to use the airport.

“We are delighted to be ordering the Airbus A319 equipped with fuel saving Sharklets,” said Dasho Sonam Tshering, Drukair’s Chairman. “The addition of a third A319 will enable us to increase capacity and open up new direct routes and to welcome even more visitors to our landlocked country where aviation really is our gateway to the world. “The success of our initiative will not only have direct and immediate benefits for our own people, but we could be setting a worthy precedent for other countries that share similar conditions,” the AP reported Bhutan’s Prime Minister, Lyonchhoen Jigmi Y, as saying in a press statement.

Organisers said the summit was focused on securing ecosystems, endangered species, and food and water sources for the eastern Himalayas. China was not present at the summit.

The third PATA Annual Adventure Travel & Responsible Tourism Conference & Mart will take place in Paro, Bhutan, from 3-7 February 2012. The event will be the first travel trade event ever hosted in the Kingdom of Bhutan, and will run under the theme ‘High Value Tourism – Low Impact Footprints’.

“We are honoured to host the PATA Adventure Travel and Responsible Tourism Conference and Mart in Bhutan for the first time,” said Kesang Wangdi, Director General of the Tourism Council of Bhutan. “I am confident that such an international conference will help broaden the understanding of tourism and stress its positive impact on societies.”

At the event, international, regional and local speakers will provide insights into existing and future travel trends in the responsible and adventure tourism sectors. A buyer-seller component will target a limited number of relevant high quality buyers primarily from Japan, Taiwan, western Europe, Australia, USA and Canada, as well as the key Asian hubs of Singapore, Hong Kong and Shanghai.

“We welcome all PATA conference delegates to visit Bhutan, where happiness is the ultimate development goal complimented with a strong commitment to environmental and cultural preservation,” said Karma Lotey, Chairman of the Association of Bhutanese Tour Operators. “We look forward to fruitful interactions that will create meaningful business associations, many friendships and lots of happy memories,” he added.

The new event in Bhutan follows previous adventure travel marts staged by PATA in 2010 and 2011 in the Nepalese cities of Kathmandu and Pokhara. The Bhutan event will also feature a series of pre-conference webinars, activities and interactions with speakers and participants.

“Due to the unique nature of this destination, participation is limited to a select number of delegates,” said Bill Calderwood, PATA’s Interim CEO. “It is therefore advisable to register as soon as possible to secure your place at what promises to be a unique event in an exceptional destination.”

The news comes as PATA prepares to launch another major travel trade event in South Asia – the PATA Travel Mart 2011, which kicks off on Wednesday in New Delhi.

Bhutan is aiming to become an exclusive, preferred destination for culture, nature and wellness tourism in the regional markets of India, Bangladesh & Maldives. The Bhutan Government has implemented multiple initiatives over the last 12 months and the OTA (overall tourist arrivals) hit nearly 41,000 in 2010, an impressive growth of approximately 26% yoy.

A few initiatives have been undertaken with a clear focus to promote Bhutan in the regional markets. The tourism board has participated in SATTE, TTF & OTM and other major trade shows, engaged in web advertising and aggressive social media marketing, developed a microsite featuring short & long haul Bhutan packages and other media advertisement for wildlife holidays, cycling, bird watching, rafting etc.

One maiden initiative was to orgainse Roadshows jointly with Taj Hotels, across India which were held in major cities across India in late February and early March. The Roadshows were a great success and created hype and buzz among top 120 travel agents, tour operators in each city. Tourism Council of Bhutan is also contemplating organizing a Fam Trip with selected press and media partners, details of which will be shared as they get finalised.
