Chubb and Royal Brunei Airlines (RB) announced a partnership to offer travel insurance to the airline’s passengers. The partnership has been launched in Brunei with more countries and territories to follow in subsequent phases.

Chubb’s travel insurance offers extensive coverage for accidents, unexpected overseas medical expenses (including COVID-19 medical cover) and travel inconvenience (including loss of luggage, travel documents and trip cancellation). In addition, passengers will have access to medical and travel services provided by Chubb Assistance’s 24-hour hotline, should they require help or advice during their trip.

The benefits are tailored to suit each traveller’s individual needs and they can simply add travel insurance during their online flight booking process on flyroyalbrunei.com.

Mr. Sabirin Hj Abd Hamid, Acting CEO of Royal Brunei Airlines, said, “At Royal Brunei, we aim to offer our passengers a seamless end-to-end experience, from booking their tickets to the end of their travel journey. This partnership with Chubb comes at a perfect time to provide them with peace of mind and a fuss-free booking experience for their upcoming travels. With the current open border situation, and shortage of staff in the travel industry globally, it is timely RB partnered with Chubb to provide a solution to manage any disruptions our passengers may encounter, that is beyond the control of the airline. In addition to the competitive travel insurance pricing, 24/7 assistance and coverage for COVID-19, passengers can purchase their travel insurance together with their air tickets or via Manage My Booking. The travel insurance is available now for the Brunei market and will soon be available for our other markets.”

Mr. Brian Hogan, Chubb’s Regional Head of Leisure & Business Travel in Asia Pacific said, “The launch is timely as travel rebounds across the globe. Borders are reopening and mobility restrictions are progressively being lifted. With travel insurance, including COVID-19 medical cover, travellers are regaining their confidence to take to the skies to explore the world again. We are proud of our collaboration with Royal Brunei Airlines to provide their passengers with peace of mind on their travels.”

The collaboration includes Hepstar, an aggregator of ancillaries and promises to deliver a range of products and bundles to complement Chubb’s travel insurance and improve the booking and travel experience of Royal Brunei Airlines’ passengers.

Brett Dyason, CEO of Hepstar said, “We’ve enjoyed a long-standing relationship with Chubb as they share our vision of changing the way travel insurance and other ancillaries are packaged and perceived by travellers. We are excited about this partnership and look forward to delivering a great customer experience for the passengers of Royal Brunei Airlines.”

Already flying one of the youngest and eco-friendly fleets in the world, Royal Brunei Airlines has unveiled plans to introduce a host of new eco measures throughout 2020 to ensure the international carrier remains a relevant business into the next decade and beyond. Adiel Mambara, country manager of UK and Ireland at Royal Brunei Airlines talks about green plans and opening of new routes from the UK.

TD: How are you committed to reducing fuel usage?

We currently fly – the B787 and A320neo. Both these aircraft are well-known in the industry for their eco credentials. We continually assess our environmental impact, looking for ways to support the most efficient technology in our business. With this in mind, we are working on a host of new initiatives for completion in 2020. Aviation is still a vital mode of transport for so many people, whether it be to travel on business or visiting friends and relatives overseas. It’s important that as an industry we offer connections for people who need them but in a way that is as environmentally friendly as possible.

Tell us about the airline’s portfolio?

We currently offer daily flights from London Heathrow via Brunei to over 26 international destinations, including the Philippines (Manila), Borneo (including Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and Sandakan), Indonesia (including Bali, Jakarta and Surabaya), and Australia (Melbourne and Brisbane).

What have been your other achievements in 2019?

In 2019, RB moved up twelve places to be at number 66 in the top 100 airlines in the world. Amongst the airline’s USPs is our young fleet (average age 2.5 years), competitive pricing (fares to Australia for example) and speedy journeys (it is believed the route from Heathrow to Melbourne via Brunei, is one of the fastest routes from the UK to Melbourne).

What are your plans for the UK in 2020?

We have an exciting expansion plan for 2020, offering greater opportunities for UK guests to reach lesser-known South East Asian destinations on our new RB Link routes. For travellers with a desire to explore somewhere new, RB Link will allow them to book their entire journey with Royal Brunei Airlines and explore four new destinations: Sandakan, Tawau, Sibu and Bintulu and Balikpapan (soon to be announced) with a simple transfer in Brunei. These unique locations each offer something different for visitors from the wildlife of Sandakan or the unique marine life and seafood of Tawau to exceptional shopping and dining opportunities in Sibu. We’re also working closely with hotels and other partners so that in addition to the flights, guests will be able to book entire holiday packages via Royal Brunei.

What is the secret behind staying afloat and profitable when so many airlines are collapsing and struggling?

We have done very well in the guest experience category with positive reviews for the products and service delivery. We are taking the guest experience even further with the continuous development of our products, services, network infrastructure and most importantly, our people. We have also launched new destinations over the last two years which complement our network; our network has become stronger and is connecting city pairs which are in high demand with our customers. We offer one of the most generous seat pitches in the industry, with an average 33 inches, a width of 17.1 inches and a recline of 4.5-6 degrees, as standard in economy. Our business class seats offer 11% more space than most other airlines.

Pride march

Celebrities and international organisations call for the boycott of all hotels owned by Brunei’s wealth fund. The backlash came after the country has passed a shocking new law that makes homosexual sex punishable by death by stoning.

The law was labelled as “medieval” and inhumane. Brunei’s new measure makes homosexual sex and adultery offences punishable by stoning to death. Additional crimes, such as theft, are now punishment by amputation.

Celebrities George Clooney and Elton John have spoken out against the new law. Meanwhile, Amnesty International issued a statement criticizing Brunei’s Sharia Penal Code. It said the legal changes were announced in a discreet notice on the attorney general’s website.

“To legalize such cruel and inhuman penalties is appalling of itself. Some of the potential ‘offences’ should not even be deemed crimes at all, including consensual sex between adults of the same gender,” said Rachel Chhoa-Howard, Brunei Researcher at Amnesty International.

“These abusive provisions received widespread condemnation when plans were first discussed five years ago.”

Elton John released a list of hotels owned by Brunei sovereign wealth fund, the Brunei Investment Agency, a government-owned wealth fund that invests on behalf of the small oil-rich sultanate.

  • Dorchester, London
  • Hotel Bel-Air, Los Angeles
  • Beverly Hills Hotel, Los Angeles
  • 45 Park Lane, London
  • Coworth Park, UK
  • Le Meurice, Paris
  • Hotel Plaza Athenee, Paris
  • Hotel Eden, Rome
  • Hotel Principe di Savoia, Mi

“Let’s be clear, every single time we stay at or take meetings at or dine at any of these nine hotels we are putting money directly into the pockets of men who choose to stone and whip to death their own citizens for being gay or accused of adultery,” Clooney said.

VisitASEAN@50 campaign highlights infographic

The outlook for travel within Southeast Asia is bright and tasty. The recent 37th ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) saw the region’s tourism ministers express optimism on growing the sector in 2018 onwards, coming from milestones achieved by 2017’s VisitASEAN@50 campaign.

The 21st Meeting of ASEAN Tourism Ministers shared preliminary data (as shown on above infographic) that indicated as many as 125 million international tourist arrivals for the entire region, far ahead of the VisitASEAN@50 campaign target of 121 million global inbound visitors. Once confirmed, this would mean tourism to the region grew by 8.4% from 2016.

Weerasak Kowsurat, 36th ATF chair and tourism minister of Thailand, welcomed these developments, saying: “As we celebrate this most recent success, we still recognise the scale of the task before us and the urgency in enhancing our competitiveness to achieve sustainable development. We must, therefore, ensure that we unite to create the synergy which brings about inclusive growth and that none of us is left behind.”

Tourism: best served with variety and to taste

Part of the ASEAN tourism ministers’ plans was to continue investing in the travel and tourism sector in 2018 and beyond. They approved the creation of a permanent secretariat in Jakarta to improve and unify tourism industry standards across member states.

The Ministers’ meeting also focused on cruise tourism, with the possible inclusion of yachting and marina activities. Discussions centred on cruise-related policies and regulations, efficiency in processes, responsibility in business practices, capacity building, destination management, and effects on local communities and the environment.

The tourism ministers also agreed to increase cross-border bus and train traffic in cooperation with their transport counterparts, who reached a consensus to ease border restrictions in 2017. Their joint plans include improving major tourism corridors and allowing travellers from member states to use domestic drivers’ licenses, with research indicating that easing travel across Indochina and Singapore would boost intra-ASEAN tourism.

Central to the Ministers’ meeting was the adoption of the Joint Declaration on Gastronomy and Tourism at the ASEAN Gastronomy Conference, which was themed ‘The Future of Food: Turning ASEAN Tradition and Craftsmanship into Sustainable Gastronomic Tourism.’ The declaration set up the region’s gastronomy platform for sharing knowledge.

“Gastronomic tourism helps to create a strong sense of place for branding and marketing destinations, and also assists in maintaining and preserving local heritage and identity, and protecting biodiversity” – Joint Declaration on Gastronomy and Tourism

Featuring keynote speeches by International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts and Tourism (IGCAT) president Dr. Diane Dodd, and Auckland University of Technology culinary arts associate professor Dr. Tracy Berno, plus a moderated panel featuring Thai chefs Chumpol Jangprai and Black Panupon, the conference discussed the role of gastronomy in building competitive destination experiences, as well as in driving inclusion, citizen participation and sustainable development.

New awards launched

Speaking of sustainability, the ATF recognised 17 establishments from nine member countries at the inaugural ASEAN Sustainable Tourism Awards (ASTA). This award will run every two years as part of the ASEAN Tourism Strategic Plan 2016-2025.

Award entries were assessed by the National Tourism Organization (NTO) in each ASEAN member state. The participating countries also standardised the judging criteria and scoring process. Auditors took inspection visits to all short-listed sites. Sounh Manivong, the tourism marketing director general of the Lao PDR Government, served as 2018 chair.

Held every January since its 1981 inception in Malaysia, the ATF is a yearly cooperative regional effort to present ASEAN as a singular tourist destination. As one of the biggest events promoting tourism in Asia, ASEAN member countries host it on a rotational basis. Other ATF events include the ASEAN NTO meeting, the Travel Exchange (TRAVEX) trade fair showcasing ASEAN destinations, airline meetings, press briefings, and a tourism conference. Vietnam will mount ATF 2019 in Halong Bay, while Brunei Darussalam will host the next ASTA along with the ATF in 2020.

Royal Brunei Airlines has launched a new service that will allow its passengers to travel further across the UK.

The Southeast Asian national carrier operates daily flights to London Heathrow Airport using its Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. And now, under the “Fly-Rail-Coach” concept, passengers will be able to combine their bookings with those of rail and coach operators in the UK.

When making a booking, Royal Brunei’s customers will be able to combine their flight with National Express coach, Great Western Railway and Heathrow Express airport train services. The new service is available for passengers booking travel agents using the GDS or directly with Royal Brunei.

“Heathrow is a major hub for the whole country and consumers have often travelled for hours before boarding their flight. Fly-Rail-Coach will help streamline this process and take the stress out of making bookings with several travel operators,” said Adiel Mambara, Royal Brunei’s UK country manager. “Agents are also a hugely important part of our operations, so this new product will make their lives easier, as well as strengthening our position in the market.”

During the booking process, the most convenient trains and buses are combined with the flight times, with prices being calculated automatically.

Royal Brunei has signed a new agreement that will enable its passengers to travel to Tokyo.

Under the new codeshare deal, passengers on Royal Brunei’s direct flights from Brunei to Hong Kong will be able to connect with Hong Kong Airlines’ direct services from Hong Kong to Tokyo.

Royal Brunei will place its ‘BI’ code on the daily Hong Kong-Tokyo Narita flights while Hong Kong Airlines will place its ‘HX’ code on the daily Bandar Seri Begawan-Hong Kong services, enabling one-stop, single-ticket travel between the capitals of Brunei and Japan.

“[Royal Brunei] would like to warmly welcome on board Hong Kong Airlines as our latest codeshare partner. Hong Kong Airlines has over 30 destinations in their network that RB does not fly to. RB customers now have a choice to travel to Tokyo via Hong Kong on board with Hong Kong Airlines. Through this partnership, RB and its passengers will benefit from the bigger joint network and more choices,” said Karam Chand, CEO of Royal Brunei.

Sales for the codeshare Hong Kong-Bandar Seri Begawan flights open on 8 September 2016, while the sale of the joint Tokyo flights starts in November.

Royal Brunei Airlines has launched the second phase of its year-long agreement with the UAE’s Ras al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority.

The partnership is intended to promote the emirate in Royal Brunei’s key destination markets, starting with the UK. And the latest phase of the agreement will see the launch of a new training module for UK-based travel agents. Hosted on the airline’s Online Travel Training (OTT) site, the course will give agents the opportunity to learn more about Ras al Khaimah and Royal Brunei’s products and services.

The two partners will also hold a series of roadshow events for UK agents to help promote the destination, and host a fam trip of travel bloggers to Ras al Khaimah in December.

“As a predominantly leisure carrier in a highly competitive market, aligning ourselves with Ras al Khaimah makes perfect sense,” said Christina Vidos, Royal Brunei’s UK country manager. “The destination has so much to offer travellers who want to enjoy a year-round resort-style experience. We are very much looking forward to working closely with travel agents and trade partners on increasing the awareness of the destination to the UK public and travel trade.”

Haitham Mattar, CEO of Ras al-Khaimah Tourism, commented; “We have very much enjoyed working with Royal Brunei Airlines to build awareness in the UK for Ras al Khaimah as a quality destination offering guaranteed sunshine, clean beaches, wonderful nature and a wide selection of world-class hotels and resorts. There is great synergy between our brands and we look forward to growing the destination together.”

Ras al Khaimah is a 45-minute drive from Dubai International Airport, from which Royal Brunei operates daily direct Boeing 787 Dreamliner services to London Heathrow Airport.

What do you hope to achieve in your new role as UK Country Manager for Royal Brunei?

Christina Vidos, country manager, Royal Brunei Airlines
Christina Vidos, country manager, Royal Brunei Airlines

Since RB started flying from the UK in 1990, the service, aircraft and overall product offering has progressed in leaps and bounds. We now fly to a wide range of exciting destinations in South East Asia, the Middle East, and Australasia, and we have a fleet of new planes, including our flagship Boeing 787 Dreamliners and the soon-to-arrive A320neos.

Arriving at this exciting time, I hope to continue to build on this success, to establish RB’s SME offering and to grow UK awareness of RB’s fantastic product and the destinations it flies to. Most recently, we have begun working with Ras Al Khaimah Tourism, to promote the neighbouring Emirate to Dubai, as an undiscovered luxury destination for those looking for some winter sun at affordable prices.

Do you have any surprises planned before the end of the year to celebrate the airline’s 25th year of flying from the UK?

As part of our 25th anniversary celebrations, we will be opening a newly refurbished London office, in line with our recently revised branding and hope to also host a celebratory event for trade media. We will also celebrating at this year’s World Travel Market in November with a surprise for visitors to our stand, shared with Ras Al Khaimah Tourism.

How is Royal Brunei’s UK service performing this year and what is driving demand?

Our key routes focus on demand destinations, including Dubai, Melbourne and Bali. We are also seeing year on year numbers growing for passengers flying with us to Kota Kinabalu.

How has the introduction of the Dreamliner on your Heathrow services impacted sales?

Whilst I cannot comment on specific sales figures, I can say that the introduction of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner on all our long-haul routes, including all flights out of London Heathrow, has been a huge draw for passengers flying to and from the UK. We are the only airline that guarantees a Dreamliner on all long-haul flights, and the quieter, more spacious and more relaxing on-board experience, has proved very popular with those flying with us.

What are the airline’s other key selling points that make it stand out from the competition on its UK routes?

In addition to being the only airline guaranteeing a Dreamliner on all long-haul flights, RB is also the only airline operating a Dreamliner service direct to Dubai. We are proud to be a boutique airline offering a truly personal service, delighting our passengers with authentic Bruneian grace, characterised by the graciousness and optimism of our flight crew.

RB offers great value flights to four continents and 15 cities, including Melbourne, Kota Kinabalu, Dubai, Manila and Bali.

What does RB hope to achieve with the rebrand in terms of trade and consumer perception?

This rebrand is not merely an ad campaign, but rather a long-term commitment to our passengers to create a family-like, peaceful and tranquil atmosphere with high-class customer service. Having refreshed our livery, uniforms and now our website, we feel this brings RB into the modern age, whilst retaining the traditional Bruneian values for which we are best known.

How important is the trade to RB and what are your plans in terms of UK trade incentives and initiatives going forward?

Our relationship with UK trade is very important and we work closely with our agents. We recognise this as key distribution channel and will continue to host fam trips to help offer experience of our new Dreamliner and the destinations we fly to. RB will also be participating at agent roadshows in major UK cities together with Ras Al Khaimah Tourism later on this year.

Tell us more about the SME offering and its benefits.

We have seen a real demand for an SME-tailored product on our Heathrow-Dubai flights. Our daily overnight flights to Dubai and our affordable prices make RB a favourite choice for SMEs looking to travel on a budget, whilst still getting the most out of their short trip by not losing any working hours during the day. We plan on launching a tailored product in the next few months to specifically to this market.

This new partnership with Ras Al Khaimah will involve a number of joint promotional events to the travel trade, initially focusing on the UK market. The activities will subsequently be rolled out in other markets across Asia Pacific, including Australia.

As part of the initiative, Royal Brunei said it will work with the travel trade to develop a range of “competitively priced packages”, and it also plans to open a new office in Ras Al Khaimah.

“We are very proud to enter into this exciting new partnership with Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority,” said Dermot Mannion, deputy chairman & CEO of Royal Brunei. In order to demonstrate our commitment to the project, we will shortly open a brand new travel office in Ras Al Khaimah as part of our GSA arrangement in UAE.

“Royal Brunei and Ras Al Khaimah share a common commitment to high standards and service quality which we are confident will create a winning combination for the future,” he added.

Haitham Mattar, CEO of Ras Al Khaimah’s TDA, commented; “Ras Al Khaimah is experiencing a terrific upswing in momentum as we position ourselves to capitalise on the growth and expansion being experienced across the region.

“We have witnessed marked increases in tourists from the UK and our other source markets as they discover that Ras Al Khaimah can offer an experience unlike any other in the Gulf. Building long term committed partnerships with international carriers such as Royal Brunei only serve to underpin our ambitions to create a sustainable and prosperous industry here in Ras Al Khaimah,” he added.

Ras Al Khaimah is located just over an hour’s drive from Dubai International Airport.

And the programme has also developed a new range of member benefits, including non-expiry of miles for Elite Gold card members, and the ability for members in all tiers to earn miles on a wider range of fare categories. In terms of redemptions, members will now have the ability to purchase tickets using a mix of cash and miles, as well as redeeming points at Royal Skies partners companies.

The airline has placed a firm order for seven Airbus A320neo aircraft, with options for a further three, in a deal potentially worth more than US$1 billion at list prices.

The new single-aisle jets will be fitted with a two-class cabin layout, and will operate on Royal Brunei’s regional network linking Bandar Seri Begawan with destinations across Asia.

“RB has successfully operated the A320 family of aircraft since 2003. We are confident this latest ‘neo’ version will bring even greater levels of efficiency, with 15% less fuel [burn],” said Dermot Mannion, Royal Brunei’s deputy chairman.

“At the same time, the new aircraft will offer unmatched levels of in-flight comfort, longer flying range and significant under-floor cargo capability,” he added.

Royal Brunei currently operates six A320-series aircraft, including two smaller A319s and four standard A320s. But it is currently in the process of modernising its fleet, and last year became the first Southeast Asian airline to operate the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

Royal Brunei Airlines has launched Boeing 787 Dreamliner flights to Melbourne.

The new fuel-efficient, twin-aisle jet touched down at Melbourne Airport for the first time on Thursday, and will now serve the Australian city daily, direct from Brunei.

The new aircraft comes equipped with 254 seats in two classes, including 18 flat-bed seats in business class and 236 seats in economy.

Royal Brunei becomes the third airline to operate the Dreamliner at Melbourne Airport, following Jetstar and Air India.

Royal Brunei Airlines has taken delivery of its first ever Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

The new fuel-efficient aircraft touched down at Brunei’s Bandar Seri Begawan International Airport in Brunei this week, following 12,000km delivery flight from Boeing’s factory in Seattle.

It will now be put into service on the national carrier’s flights to Singapore for a limited period of time, before moving to long-haul services.
“This exciting addition keeps passenger comfort and high quality service at the heart of our airline and is yet another effort to ensure our fleet remains modern and offers peaceful and tranquil travel,” said Royal Brunei’s chairman, Dermot Mannion.

“As a small airline we offer truly personal service, delighting our passengers with an authentic Bruneian grace to enrich their journeys.”

Royal Brunei’s Dreamliner comes fitted with 254 seats in two classes – 18 in business class and 236 in economy. The aircraft also includes the standard Dreamliner cabin features, such as electronically-dimmable windows, larger overhead luggage bins and lower cabin pressure.

This is the first of five B787s ordered by Royal Brunei, which will gradually replace its existing long-haul fleet of B777-200s, which have been leased from Singapore Airlines.

The aircraft is scheduled to commence operations on the Brunei-Singapore route on 18 October 2013, with long-haul flights to London, via Dubai, starting on 1 December. Then in the second quarter of 2014, it plans to launch the Dreamliner on its Melbourne route.

Royal Brunei becomes the first Southeast Asian airline to operate the Dreamliner.

The development of open skies policies in Southeast Asia will drive the expansion of the region’s aviation industry, a new report has stated.

In its ‘Southeast Asian Aviation’ report, Frost & Sullivan Asia Pacific said that open skies policies would lead to increased flexibility, route coverage and profitability among Southeast Asian carriers.

“The ASEAN aviation market will develop significantly in the next few years with considerable increases in infrastructure investment and planned policies in the making which will encourage this growth momentum,” said Neil Dave, Frost & Sullivan’s Consulting Analyst for Aerospace & Defense.

“Consumers will look to benefit from increased choice of destinations, routes and greater affordability with rising standards of living and cost-savings passed down from airlines due to improved efficiency and maximisation of profits,” he added.

According to Frost & Sullivan, the demand for a “well-knit air travel infrastructure system” and an increasing demand for low-cost travel are the main drivers of ASEAN open skies policy implementation.

“Many ASEAN countries currently lack comprehensive and well developed ground transport infrastructure and countries in these regions are divided by vast seas, therefore there is a demand for a well-knit, flexible air-transport system.” added Dave. “Also, with the increasing popularity of air travel as mode of transport, there is a rise in demand for low-cost travel among countries in the ASEAN region which are not connected.”

The Frost & Sullivan report warned however, that the implementation of open skies policies may have some negative impacts for ASEAN airlines. “Stiff competition from mature, foreign players may eventually squeeze out smaller players from a developing aviation industry leading to loss of aviation related jobs,” the report stated.

Frost & Sullivan also noted that there are still several restraints in the implementation of open skies policies in the ASEAN region, including a lack of infrastructure in certain countries. In the long-term however, the report said open skies policies would bring about “real and spill-over benefits” to the region.

“The management of concerns regarding aviation safety, security, tariffs and fair competition will be fundamentally critical to the succession of open skies policies in the ASEAN region. However, with these kinks and issues ironed out in time, ASEAN as a region can look to benefit heavily from the implementation of these policies,” Dave concluded.

A round-up of airline news

Royal Brunei rebrands

Royal Brunei launched its new branding and restructure in London last week. Revealing its new look at The Dorchester in London, the airline is aiming to position itself as a boutique “stylish small airline with a mid-range service” taking inspiration from Brunei itself. Its new livery and logo will be followed by new uniforms, lounge, ticket offices and website and comes as it prepares to receive its Boeing 787 Dreamliner in October 2013.

Qantas drops onboard Wi-Fi

Qantas has scrapped its plans to provide wireless internet access on flights, citing a lack of interest from customers during a trial. The trial, announced by chief executive Alan Joyce in December last year, ran for nine months and allowed passengers to access the internet on six of the airline’s A380 superjumbos on long-haul flights to London and across the Pacific to Los Angeles. A spokesman said that customer take-up of the Wi-Fi service on flights during the trial, which ended last month, was extremely low at around 5%, and very expensive to provide.

Vueling announces London-Florence

Vueling has announced it will fly between Heathrow and Florence next year as part of its expansion plans at the Italian airport. The Spanish carrier will operate the route daily from March 2013 alongside services from Florence to Copenhagen, Berlin and Hamburg.

CityJet announces new routes

CityJet has added two German cities to its network from London City Airport. The airline will operate flights to Dresden and Paderborn from 1 April and 22 April 2013 respectively. Both routes will operate six times a week. “There is a strong inbound demand for direct routes to the heart of London from Germany both from a business as well as a leisure perspective.   By expanding our German network to four destinations, including Munster and Nuremberg, we are answering that demand at a time when Germany continues to remain Europe’s economic powerhouse,” said Christine Ourmières, CEO of CityJet.

easyJet ups Birmingham-Belfast frequency

easyJet is to increase flights between Birmingham and Belfast International Airport following high demand. A second Sunday flight from Belfast to Birmingham will commence on 31 March 2013 departing at 13.25. The carrier has already flown 14,000 people on the route since its launch this October. “Sunday is a strong travelling day for both business commuters and people on weekend breaks, therefore doubling our Sunday offering will give our passengers,” said Ali Gayward, head of Northern Ireland at easyJet.

Travel industry stakeholders will be hoping for progress in the development of a pan-ASEAN visa at the members summit in Bali. With increased interest in Asian travel, leaders are trying to aside their differences and design a common visa framework, similar to Europe’s Schengen visa, to boost foreign visitors. Foreign ministers will contribute ideas in the development of a common ASEAN visa for non-nationals in meetings this week. Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand are committed to the process, though differences remain, however Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam are not. The difficulty in agreement stands on exiting visa discrepancies whereby some members permit visa on arrival to foreign nationals, when others do not. Governments therefore, face losing non-tax income form such a scheme.
