Mongolia, one of the main partners of this year’s Asia Destination Film Forum (DFF 2020), which will take place in Bangkok on 30 January 2020, is showcasing the natural beauty of their country by screening the award-winning film ‘The Steed’.

The film plays at the beginning of the 20th century and tells the story of a boy and a horse whose extraordinary bond to each other and the land give them the courage to find each other after being cruelly separated.

Tserenbat Namsrai, Mongolia’s minister of environment and tourism, who is also on a panel at the forum, said: “Mongolia is a country swept in history and full of pure natural beauty. We want to inspire travellers from Southeast Asia, to experience adventures, be part of our community, explore Mongolian culture, spirituality, and our many festivals.” With consistent growth in tourism arrivals in recent years, the country is developing its tourism infrastructure and experience with a focus on sustainability and inclusivity.

To bring Mongolia to Bangkok, the Ministry of Environment and Tourism of Mongolia will also host the Film Festival BBQ Party, which will include authentic traditional Mongolian food, cultural performances, and music.

Jens Thraenhart, founder of the Destination Film Forum said: “Mongolia, which is still one of these rather unknown destinations for many, is very smart in leveraging film and visual storytelling to inspire people from all over the world to experience an adventure of a lifetime.”

National carrier Mongolyn Irgenii Agaaryn Teever (MIAT) Mongolian Airlines will soon welcome the first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner to its fleet, as the airline looks to connect its home base in Ulaanbaatar with major European and North American cities beginning in 2021.

The 787-9 – the longest-range version of Boeing’s Dreamliner widebody airplane – will join MIAT’s fleet via lease from Air Lease Corporation (ALC).

“Our vision is to become a globally recognised Mongolian national flag carrier, and we are making a significant step forward by adding the first 787-9 Dreamliner to our fleet,” said Battur Davaakhuu, president and CEO of MIAT Mongolian Airlines. “The Mongolian Dreamliner will fly our passengers direct and in unmatched comfort to their dream destinations,” he added.

The Mongolian flag carrier joins other airlines in Asia – including Hainan Airlines, All Nippon Airways and Vietnam Airlines – that operate long-distance routes using the super-efficient, long-range 787-9. The airplane can fly up to 7,635 nautical miles (14,140 km).

Los Angeles-based ALC purchased the airplane and is providing a long-term leasing agreement for its delivery to MIAT.

“We now have a significant lease placement with MIAT. We are happy to support the national carrier as it expands its fleet with the most technologically advanced aircraft to connect Mongolia with the rest of the world,” said Steven F. Udvar-Házy, executive chairman of ALC.

Since the 787’s introduction in 2011, Boeing has booked over 1,400 orders from more than 80 customers. The company will now count MIAT as its newest Dreamliner operator.

In the past, Mongolia was often used as a by-word for an inaccessible or obscure location, thanks to the hardy nature of its landscapes and distant geographical position slap bang between Russia and China – historically not the two most open nations.

More famous as the birthplace of Genghis Khan, leader of the Mongol Hordes, than as a tourism destination, in modern times Mongolia has relied on mining as its main source of income, with 80% of its exports coming from the substantial mineral deposits found inside its borders.

However, thanks to the rise in popularity of experience drive holidays, with events such as the annual Nadaam festival, where participants celebrate Mongolians’ rich heritage with horse races, archery contests and wrestling, the country is now drawing tourists from Russia, China and APAC as well as Europe and the States.

Compounding this tourism trend, Mongolia also introduced a measure to drive the country’s potential by abolishing tourism licences and the introduction of a tax exemption scheme which offers up to 10% of total investment to companies building “high-rated hotels and tourist complexes”.

This has resulted in Mongolia witness a slow, but steady, increase in the number of international visitors, creeping up to 471,094 in 2017, a 28.3% increase on 2016’s figure. The numbers may be slow but progress is progress, and growth of more than a quarter is still impressive.

One company seeking to take advantage of the uptick in interest to Mongolia is Hunnu Air, Mongolia’s second largest airline, who have announced a new deal with Sabre corporation which will see the carrier’s content rolled out via the tech provider’s marketplace platform used by more than 425,000 global travel agents.

“Hunnu Air has taken on a new direction, more committed than ever to providing convenient domestic and regional flight options to travellers. In conjunction with our growing fleet and numerous scheduling options, we are eager to leverage Sabre and the platform that we need to continue to grow our operations, and further anchor ourselves within the country’s travel landscape,” said Munkhjargal Purevjal, CEO of Hunnu Air.

“Sabre understands the Mongolia market”

Rakesh Narayanan, vice president, of airline business for Sabre Travel Network, Asia Pacific, said: “Sabre understands the Mongolia market and is well positioned to support Hunnu Air’s growth through the distribution of new bookable content. We are proud to support the carrier’s strategic considerations and to distribute their content through Sabre’s leading global travel marketplace.”

Old steam locomotive on the Trans-Siberian network

It is now getting on for five years ago that I struck out for Beijing on the Trans-Siberian Express. The epic journey through Europe, Russia Mongolia and into China was an incredible experience and, without doubt, is one of my all-time favourite memories.

However, as much as I enjoyed the journey itself, the rigmarole of planning this mammoth train trek is not something I would wish to repeat and a bit of guidance and advice would have gone a long way to making the trip of a lifetime even better.

Now, British based escorted holiday provider Five expert tips for selling bespoke train holidays, a member of the Great Rail Journeys group, has unveiled ‘TOP TIPS: How to Sell a Tailor-Made Rail Holiday’ full of advice on how to sell and create a bespoke train journey the customer will cherish forever.

“We do it all for them – the agent just needs to take the customer requirements. We provide bespoke quotes in a professional format for agents”

Lindsay Dixon, head of trade sales at GRJ Independent. said: “GRJ Independent is really growing through the trade for us, as it’s a great product to help agents tailor-make holidays for their customers without the hassle of putting it all together.

“We do it all for them – the agent just needs to take the customer requirements. We provide bespoke quotes in a professional format for agents to pass onto their customers. The possibilities are endless as we have access to lots of product worldwide.”

Check out GRJ Independent staff’s top train travel tips and suggested itineraries:

1. Don’t wait to be asked for a rail holiday

“Your customers may not know they can experience their requested destination by rail. Suggest Great Rail Journeys Independent for destination-based enquiries. Some destinations, like Switzerland, are better by rail as you see so much more of the fantastic scenery,” said Dixon.

For example, the Panoramic Round Trip of Switzerland, an eight-day sojourn through the striking alpine countryside, costs from £1,745 per person and includes the Glacier Express, Jungfrau Railway, Bernina Express, GoldenPass Line, Montreux, Interlaken and St Moritz.

2. The best way to build a multi-city trip

“Multi-city tours are always popular and suggesting a tailormade rail holiday could be a perfect option for many customers, turning the journey into a part of the holiday. They are able to choose their cities, how many excursions and how much free time they have to explore each city and its’ nearby attractions,” added Amanda Leggett, business development manager for North Scotland & Northern Ireland.

Chicago skyline at night
Chicago skyline

The Amtraks “Empire Builder” – Chicago to Seattle, lasting a full ten days, starts at price of £1,675 per person and includes Chicago, The Willis Tower, Chicago’s Botanic Garden, Amtrak’s Empire Builder, Seattle and the Space Needle.

3. Kids are easier to entertain on a train

Beverley Philpotts, business development manager for Central & Wales, said: “Rail holidays are sometimes seen as the mature traveller’s choice; however GRJ independent can tailor rail holidays for many different groups.

“For example, they can be tailormade to suit families with young children who may struggle with long flights. They can make an itinerary that travels more slowly and allows more free time in each destination to suit young children’s routines.”

The Pride of Africa train shot
The Pride of Africa

Cape Town & the Pride of Africa starts from £3,045 per person. The nine-day tour in and around SA’s capital city includes Cape Town, Cape Point, Table Mountain, The Pride of Africa, Kimberley, Diamond Mine Museum, Big Hole and Pretoria.

4. Give customers the choice of luxury

“A tailor-made holiday means that customers can choose their preferred class of travel, whether they want a budget option or a first-class experience, or a mix-and-match throughout their trip. This ability opens our itineraries to those that have a low budget and those looking for a splurge,” said Laura Strawinski, GRJ Independent assistant manager.

Siberia, Lake Baikal
Lake Baikal

The Trans-Siberian – Moscow to Beijing 17-day journey starts at £6,950 per person and includes Moscow, Beijing, Tsar’s Gold Train, Kazan and the Kremlin, Yekaterinburg and Novosibirsk, Lake Baikal, Ulaanbaatar, The Great Wall of China, Gobi Desert and Tiananmen Square.

5. Set your own pace

Travelling by train independently on your own tailor-made itinerary allows you the time and space to journey at your own pace, and the freedom to look out of the window and watch the world go by,” concluded Sally Hauser, GRJ Independent manager.

Venice, Italy

The Venice & the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is a five-day holiday discovering the beautiful canal city in the north of Italy. Starting at £2,675 per person the week-long jaunt includes a passage on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express Venice, St Mark’s Square, Torre dell’Orologio, Caffè Florian and the Belmond British Pullman.

If the lure of luxury living in unusual destinations is what gets you going then you could do a lot worse than checking out The Pavilions Hotels & Resorts’ latest travel experience – and first ever luxury pop-up tented camp – in the grasslands of Mongolia.

All set to pitch glamp in June and run throughout summer 2018, The Pavilions Mongolia is comprised of 20 ‘gers’ (a type of Mongolian yurt), with interiors decked out in an authentic Mongol memorabilia, where comfort and cosiness are key – with adventure not far behind.

Guest will be able to enjoy an array of traditional local pursuits such as horseriding, archery and fishing, along with more modern activities including photography, mountain biking and kayaking.

“Mongolia is an inspirational destination where guests can experience genuine adventures, off the beaten track,” said Gordon Oldham, founder and CEO of The Pavilions Hotels & Resorts.

“With its collection of traditional Mongolian gers this unique camp offers complete cultural immersion with a wide range of outdoor activities, including many traditional Mongolian pastimes, in a truly spectacular setting,” he added.

Culture vultures can learn more about the ancient nomadic lifestyle of the tribes who make this remote corner of the world their home, by attending special workshops on carpet-making and cashmere wool production. They can even enter Mongolian polo matches (after some training from seasoned instructors), horse races, and traditional archery competitions.

The majority of the proceeds from The Pavilions Mongolia goes to The Genghis Khan Riding & Adventure Camp, a project dedicated to preserving the customs and culture of the region, by teaching local children the unique Mongol style of equestrianism, art and music.

“The Genghis Khan Riding & Adventure Camp is all about sustainable travel, benefiting the children in the local communities. I know that our guests will be delighted to know that they are contributing to such a worthwhile cause, while also enjoying their own once-in-a-lifetime experience,” Oldham added.

The essence of The Pavilions Mongolia is that all activities are genuine parts of daily local life. Guests will experience the Mongolian grasslands as they have existed for centuries, and every day is flexible with no set agendas or itineraries, allowing guests to head out on-foot or on horseback to discover the hills, valleys, forests and rivers that surround the camp.

Rates start from US$600 per adult and US$420 per child (2-16 years of age), including all meals, daily activities, massages and yoga classes.

MIAT Mongolian Airlines has formed a new technology partnership with Amadeus as it aims to expand and modernise its operations.

The national carrier will adopt the Amadeus Altéa Suite, which manages all aspects of an airline’s operations from booking to boarding. This includes reservations, inventory, departure control, flight management and e-commerce systems, plus dedicated solutions for revenue management and its loyalty programme.

The move comes at a time of significant growth for MIAT and Mongolian aviation, with the new Ulaanbaatar International Airport set to open in May 2018. MIAT also has outstanding orders for Boeing’s new 737 MAX aircraft.

“Our recent codeshare agreements with Asian airlines and the new aircraft we will receive over the next few years put us in a strong position for growth. To achieve it we need to make sure we have the best technology available to support our objectives. This partnership with Amadeus is a critical part of the foundation on which we will build a brighter future,” said Tamir Tumurbaatar, MIAT’s president & CEO.

More than 130 of the world’s leading airlines currently use the Amadeus Altéa Suite.

Korean Air staff have been providing practical support to under-privileged communities across Asia this month, under the airline’s CSR campaign.

Employees worked alongside 50 local residents in the Philippines’ Bicol region from 21-27 August to provide aid to the local community. Bicol, a remote peninsula in the northern part of Luzon, was severely impacted by Typhoon Rammasun in 2014, and living conditions remain unsafe for many.

The Korean Air team helped to build shelters and provide free meals for local residents and students, as well as installing solar-powered street lamps to improve safety.

And in the same week, Korean Air staff travelled to Mongolia to donate supplies to a local school. Thirty computers along with desks and chairs were provided to a school in Baganuur, as part of the airline’s annual computer donation programme which started in 2013.

Korean Air has also been planting trees in Baganuur since 2004, and the area’s Korean Air Forest now extends to 440,000m², consisting of some 90,000 trees.

The airline’s CSR efforts have also seen it provide aid to flood victims in Myanmar, earthquake victims in Nepal and other disaster-affected communities across Asia.

A series of historic and cultural sites in Asia have been protected by UNESCO, following the latest round of additions to the global World Heritage list.

Five sites in China, Japan, Mongolia, Singapore and South Korea were inscribed on the UNESCO list during the 39th session of the World Heritage Committee in Germany.

In China, the Tusi Sites of Hunan, Hubei and Guizhou provinces were selected due to their importance in tracing a group of ethnic minorities who lived separately across a range of mountainous regions, but adopted a form of central government.

“The sites of Laosicheng, Tangya and Hailongtun Fortress that make up the site bear exceptional testimony to this form of governance, which derived from the Chinese civilization of the Yuan and Ming periods,” UNESCO said.

South Korea also won UNESCO recognition for its Baekje Historic Areas, which comprise eight archaeological sites that feature fortresses, royal tombs and other ancient buildings, and in Mongolia, the Great Burkhan Khaldun Mountain was recognised for its beauty and cultural significance. The site is believed to be the birthplace and burial site of Genghis Khan.

The sites Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution have also been listed, with 11 properties said to “bear testimony to the rapid industrialisation of the country from the middle of the 19th Century to the early 20th Century”.

But perhaps the most significant inclusion was that of the Botanic Gardens in Singapore. Founded by the British in 1859, the Botanical Gardens have now become Singapore’s first UNESCO World Heritage site.

In making its judgement, UNESCO said the gardens had been an “important centre for science, research and plant conservation… in Southeast Asia since 1875.” It becomes only the third botanic gardens on the UNESCO list, following Orto botanico di Padova in Italy and the UK’s Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew.

In contrast to Singapore, China now has the second highest number of UNESCO World Heritage sites in the world, with 48. Italy (51) has the most. Following the latest round of inscriptions, Japan now has 19 UNESCO World Heritage sites, South Korea 12 and Mongolia four.

UNESCO recognition not only ensures the preservation of historic sites, but also provides a potential tourism boost for the areas.

MIAT Mongolian Airlines launched its first flights to Singapore this week.

The carrier commenced a new twice weekly service from Mongolia’s capital Ulaanbaatar to Singapore’s Changi Airport, via Beijing, on 24 September. Flights will now operate every Wednesday, Saturday using a 174-seat Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

Changi Airport Group’s executive vice President for air hub & development, Yam Kum Weng, welcomed the new arrival.

“We are proud to welcome Mongolia’s national carrier to the family of airlines at Changi Airport,” he said. “Mongolia has enjoyed strong economic growth and as the country opens up its economy and resource sectors, there will be more business and investment opportunities not only between our two countries, but also between Mongolia and Asia Pacific.

“The direct Ulaanbaatar-Singapore service by MIAT Mongolian Airlines is thus timely to support growing demand for business and leisure travel.”

Singapore becomes MIAT’s seventh international destination in Asia, following Beijing, Hong Kong, Osaka, Seoul, Tokyo Haneda and Tokyo Narita airports.

For Changi, the new arrival represents its fourth new airline of the year, following Uzbekistan Airways, Spring Airways and VietJet Air.

MIAT Mongolian Airlines has taken delivery of a new Boeing 767-300ER aircraft – the first ever to be purchased directly by the airline.

The new wide-body aircraft touched down at Ulaanbaatar’s Chinggis Khaan International Airport for the first time this week, joining MIAT’s existing fleet of four B767 and B737 aircraft. It comes configured with 263 seats – 18 in business class and 245 in economy.

“This is a momentous step forward for MIAT Mongolian Airlines as we continue to enhance our fleet,” said Jargalsaikhan Gungaa, the national carrier’s president & CEO. “We are pleased with the comfort, range and payload of the new 767-300ER and we look forward to introducing it into our long-haul fleet.”

MIAT placed the order in 2011, marking the first time in more than two decades that the airline has purchased new aircraft, rather than leasing them.

“We congratulate MIAT Mongolian Airlines on the delivery of their first direct purchase 767-300ER,” said Ihssane Mounir, Boeing’s senior vice president of Sales for Northeast Asia. “With the new passenger-pleasing cabin interior and low operating costs, Boeing is confident that the 767-300ER will play an important role as MIAT Mongolian Airlines continues expanding into new markets.”

Mongolia’s Eznis Airways has purchased two Avro RJ85 regional jetliners from BAE Systems. The first aircraft has just been delivered and will enter service later this month, while the second aircraft

will follow in July. Both aircraft will seat 93 passengers in a six-abreast economy class
configuration. Both aircraft are also equipped with the BAE Systems’ unpaved runway protection kit that allows operations from non-tarmac runways.

The additional capacity, over the airline’s existing fleet of four 34-seat Saab 340B turboprops, will allow Eznis to expand operations by increasing capacity on existing routes and possibly flying to new international destinations.

Chief Executive Officer of Eznis Airways, S. Munkhsukh said; “Deliveries of the Avro RJ85s will be another important step towards our aim to be the number one choice for regional air service in North Central Asia, by connecting Mongolia to nearby international markets. The Avro RJ85 is a four-engined jet aircraft that provides reliable, safe and distinctive performance. Moreover, it is the only jet-engined aircraft for operation on gravel runways, which is ideal for the conditions of our country. The arrival of this aircraft will be an important event not only in the history of our airline, but for Mongolia’s aviation industry.”

Presently Eznis Airways covers 14 domestic scheduled and charter destinations, as well as two short-haul international routes to Hailar in China’s Inner Mongolia region and Ulan-Ude in Russia.

Boeing and MIAT Mongolian Airlines have announced an order for two Next-Generation 737-800 aircraft and one 767-300ER plane. The order, valued at US$245 million at list prices, marks the first time in more than two decades that MIAT will purchase Boeing aircraft instead of leasing them.

The agreement was signed by Kim Pastega, Boeing Commercial Airplanes’ Vice President & General Manager of the 767 Program, and Orkhon Tseyen-Oidov, President and CEO of MIAT Mongolian Airlines, in Washington DC, in the presence of Tsakhia Elbegdorj, President of Mongolia.

“We are making a tremendous step forward with this order, and the Next-Generation 737-800 and 767-300ER airplanes are the ideal airplanes for us to expand our existing fleet to offer more scheduled and charter services from Mongolia to major cities in Asia and Europe,” said Tseyen-Oidov. “The Next-Generation 737-800 has already proved to be a great success with us through its advanced technology and high operating efficiency, and we look forward to realizing the benefits of the 767-300ERs comfort, range and increased payload capabilities for our long-haul flights.”

“MIAT Mongolia Airlines’ choice of both the Next-Generation 737-800 and 767-300ER shows its confidence in the Boeing 150- to 300-seat product family, which features incredible economics and operational capability over competing jetliners,” Pastega said. “We are committed to MIAT Mongolia Airlines’ future success by delivering the best airplanes and providing superior service.”

Headquartered at Chingis Khaan International Airport in the Mongolian capital of Ulaanbaatar, MIAT Mongolian Airlines is the country’s national carrier. It has been operating for more than 55 years.
