It looks increasingly likely that an Australian tourist has drowned in Phuket, Thailand.
Jennifer Laidley from Queanbeyan, Australia, was last seen swimming off Karon beach Monday night. There has been no sign of the 44-year-old nurse since, and fears are mounting that she was swept away by rip tides which are particularly strong at this time of year.
After Ms. Laidley’s travelling companion reported her missing, the Thai authorities have received some criticism for their lackadaisical search and rescue operation. Australian journalist, Alan Morison, told ABC News; “Unless the circumstances are exceptional they seldom put something in the air, so there are no helicopters or planes,” he said. “So being a search by boats it’s always going to be a bit unclear as to what they might find and when. The worst is feared and the concern is that Jennifer is dead.”
Australian Consular Officials are liaising with Thai authorities on the search and rescue operation and officers in Canberra are in touch with Ms. Laidley’s family.
