BA marks 85 years of in-flight meals
On 1 May 2012 British Airways will celebrate the 85th anniversary of the launch of in-flight meals.
In 1927 Imperial Airways, (the predecessor to BA) introduced the Silverwing in-flight service on the London-Paris route. A male steward served just 10 passengers on the flight, using a small cabinet carrying whisky, beer and water. They also carried a packet of sandwiches and biscuits, and flasks of hot water for coffee or beef tea. Up until this time, passengers had to fend for themselves, packing home made snacks for the journey.
Eighty-five years on, BA cabin crew serve around 100,000 meals a day.
Bill Francis, BA’s Head of In-flight Service said; “At British Airways we have an incredible history. We’ve developed the service to our customers and even as we’ve grown from small propeller aircraft to 747s, we’ve managed to maintain the magic that makes flying special.”
