Beijing plans to become ‘world city’

Beijing’s mayor, Guo Jinlong, announced on Monday his plans to turn Beijing into a ‘world city’ by 2050. A ‘world city’ is referred to as having a global influence in terms of politics, economy and culture. According to a Xinhua report, Guo said that Beijing currently lagged behind New York, London and Tokyo in various aspects, such as per-capita GDP and the number of international organisations headquartered in the city.
