Tourists visiting Indonesia’s famous Borobudur Temple must now wear batik sarongs when they enter the temple, the site managers have decreed. The Antara news agency reported the UNESCO-listed temple’s General Manager, Pujo Suwarno, as saying that the unusual scheme is intended to increase appreciation of the temple’s cultural heritage, as well as boosting tourist numbers.
“The concept of wearing sarongs inside the temple is also a tourist attraction,” Pujo was quoted saying yesterday, adding that 10,000 sarongs were now ready for visitors’ use.
Signposts have been erected at the West Java site telling tourists when they should put on the sarongs.
