Celebrity Eclipse finally gets named
Celebrity Cruises was able to celebrate the launch of Celebrity Eclipse this weekend after plans were postponed in order to rescue stranded holiday makers from Bilbao, Spain.
The new Solstice-class cruise ship was officially named in her home port, Southampton (on the UK’s south coast), by famous Yachtswoman Emma Pontin (pictured).
Last week the ship, which was due to sail with trade and media on board last Thursday, took its maiden voyage to Spain to pick up Brits who due to the volcanic ash cloud, had not been able to fly home.
“The rescue operation to Bilbao was quite a welcome to life on the ocean for Celebrity Eclipse - now, as you stroll around her decks, you will be overwhelmed by her beauty,” said Pontin, the Celebrity Eclipse Godmother, as she named the ship.
“You will not cease to be amazed by her relaxed glamour.”
Celebrity Eclipse, was blessed by Rabbi Neil Amswych from Bournemouth Reform Synagogue and Reverend Andrew Huckett, Prot Chaplain before the champagne bottle, which had been blown onboard at the Hot Glass Show, was broken over the ship’s funnel.
The ceremony was broadcast for the first time throughout the ship and to crowds in Mayflower Park, Southampton, where external launch celebrations were taking place.
The ship, with sails at 2850 double occupancy, will now cruise to the Mediterranean, Canary Islands, Scandinavia and Russia throughout the summer. It will sail around the Caribbean during the winter.
