There can be a tendency for city hotels to conform to certain bland standards; ticking the boxes of standard requirements for the everyday business traveller. Working desk? Check. Direct dial telephone? Check. Choice of F&B outlets? Check. Singapore however, is not your ordinary city, and the Grand Hyatt Singapore is certainly not your normal city hotel. The vision of the city’s design and planning pushes the boundaries of usual expectations, allowing hotel groups such as Hyatt to follow suit. In-pool seating area? TVs on gymnasium equipment? Waterfall flowing through the hotel? Check!
With modern architectural marvels such as the Esplanade Centre and Singapore Flyer now contrasting with the existing grand masterpieces, hotels in the city state have been moving in the same direction. The Grand Hyatt was already a preferred and respected development on the busy Scotts Road, offering all the conveniences and facilities expected of the city, and the brand. A recent large-scale refurbishment however, has brought the hotel into the modern era, Singaporean style.
Indeed, the Grand Hyatt Singapore represents that most modern of faces to this thriving 21st Century city. Its 663 rooms and suites are slick, comfortably and functionally modern – if not perhaps as outwardly innovative as some of the hotel’s newest public areas. The 37-inch LCD television and goose-down beds do however, offer a great deal more luxury than the majority of similarly-priced hotels in the city.
It is in the public areas that the hotel really shines. Overlooking the broad lobby area, the mezza9 bar and restaurant delivers an ideal first impression of what this hotel promises to deliver. The open-planned layout, including gleaming chrome kitchen, offer a stylishly laid back place to eat, drink and catch up with friends and colleagues.
The hotel’s recently revamped Damai Spa is forms part of an extensive range of leisure facilities on offer at the hotel. Just walking down the corridor towards one of the 11 treatment rooms in a soothing experience – the blue walls seeming to ripple and flow as though entering a tube of water. The treatment rooms themselves are large and peaceful, while the “couple’s suite” contains a unique stone bath, which took designers several months to carve out from a single boulder. Certainly not your average hotel spa.
The large gymnasium features LCD screen on exercise machines, while the free-form outdoor swimming pool is surrounded by Scandinavian-style wooden decking and features in-pool seating area, and plenty of pool-side sun loungers to allow guests forget they are in one of Asia’s busiest business cities.
Whatever one may expect from a city hotel, the Grand Hyatt Singapore seems to go one step beyond, transforming what could be a tired concept into a chic, innovative, and above all, relaxing hotel. Hyatt has created a far-from-ordinary city hotel within a far-from-ordinary city.
