China Southern Airlines has finalised an order for 12 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, the extended version of the fuel-efficient long-haul jet.
The new order, which is valued at US$3.2 billion at current list prices, will supplement China Southern’s existing fleet of 10 smaller B787-8 Dreamliners.
“The 787 Dreamliners have helped us to achieve initial success in implementing our internationalization strategy in the past few years and enabled us to make our operation and services more appealing to passengers,” said Tan Wangeng, CEO of China Southern. “The additional new 787-9s will further increase our capacity and services for our long-haul routes.”
China Southern became the first Chinese carrier to introduce the Dreamliner, and it now operates its fleet of 10 B787-8s on routes connecting Guangzhou to London, Rome, Vancouver, Perth, Auckland and Christchurch.
These aircraft feature 228 seats in a three-class layout.
And while the configuration of the new B787-9s has not been revealed, the extended version of the Dreamliner typically features approximately 15% more seats than the B787-8.
The new aircraft are expected to be delivered between 2018 and 2020.
