China’s Ministry of Transport has announced plans for a nationwide cut of highway toll fees. The move will create a multi-tier system of toll charges, depending on the class of road. All tolls will be abolished on second class highways. The move follows the highly publicised case of Shi Jianfeng, a farmer from Henan province who gained widespread online support when he was sentenced to life imprisonment for evading highway tolls totalling CNY3.68 million (US$557,000). The verdict has since been overturned.
