China and Vietnam are considering developing a visa-free tourism zone on the border of the two countries, local tourism authorities announced yesterday. Chinese state news agency, Xinhua, reported that the area will include the city of Dongxing in southwest China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Mong Cai in Quang Ninh province, northern Vietnam. Tourists and their vehicles from China and Vietnam would be allowed to cross the border without any need for visas or travel permits.
Xinhua reported the Deputy Chief of the Guangxi Tourism Bureau, Yu Xiaojun, as saying that the two cities had already worked out an overall plan, which is currently awaiting approval at national level. Once given the go ahead, the project is expected to take 5-10 years to be implemented.Earlier this week construction of the largest market on the China-Vietnam border was completed in Dongxing. The 51-hectare, CNY2 billion (US$304 million) market is located on the east bank of the Peilum River facing Mong Cai.
