The fifth edition of Eco Expo Asia will be held at the AsiaWorld-Expo, Hong Kong from 3 - 6 November 2010. For the second consecutive year, the territory’s only trade fair dedicated to products and services for environmental protection has the total support of the Environment Bureau of the Hong Kong SAR Government, which will act once again as co-organiser of the event.
The 2010 event will focus on “Business Solutions to Climate Change”, during which time effective solutions tackling the environmental challenges faced in Asia will be introduced. In addition, four main exhibit profiles will concentrate on Air Quality, Energy Efficiency & Energy, Waste Management & Recycling and Eco-friendly Product, plus, special areas for electric vehicles, green building and green technology have also been allocated. This, combined with the highly regarded concurrent Eco Asia Conference, featuring acclaimed environmental experts from around the world, highlights Hong Kong’s status as an international marketplace for innovative environmental technologies.
2010 event to be held concurrently with C40 Conference
The 2010 edition of Eco Expo Asia will coincide with the city’s hosting of a C40 Conference on two key aspects of the climate change solutions: building energy efficiency and electric vehicles. The Conference will be held from 5 - 6 November, bringing together government officials and environmental experts from over 40 cities including commercial and non-governmental sectors to share their insight of the climate change solutions.
Senior officials of the C40 cities, as well as key officials from related Chinese mainland government departments, environmental professionals from business, civil society, academia and relevant local stakeholders will converge in Hong Kong to share valuable information. Eco Expo Asia is the ideal parallel platform to be appraised of the latest environmental technologies and meet with key industry players.
Government’s commitment to tackle climate change supports environmental market
With the commitment of the Chinese mainland government to cut its carbon emission intensity by 40 - 45% in 2020 from levels recorded in 2005, the government will need to invest USD 30 billion annually. The National Development and Reform Commission has announced that a carbon reduction plan will be incorporated in the 12th Five-Year-Plan, covering the period from 2011 - 2015. What’s more, the development of a “Low Carbon Economy” and the expansion of renewable energy resources will increasingly become a major priority, and will require a further annual investment of approximately USD147 billion until 2050.
In August 2009, an Environmental Co-operation Agreement was signed between the Hong Kong SAR Government and the Guangdong provincial government. Both sides agreed to improve the environmental quality of the region through enhancing co-operation and related mechanisms with a view to transforming the Pearl River Delta into a green and quality living area. In addition to the continuous emphasis on air quality management and clean production, both governments will foster co-operation in promoting green business development by exploring new co-operation models for recycling and reusing detoxified and reusable materials.
A recently released report from Asian Developing Bank reveals that South East Asia will be suffering a projected 7 - 8% loss in GDP from climate change by the end of this century. The region is now actively seeking environmental tools to address this issue. The need for green technologies and products in the region has created the backdrop of Eco Expo Asia, which is dedicated to provide one-stop solutions for environmental protection.
The 2009 show received 10,102 visitors from 105 countries/regions and over 40 buying missions representing more than 490 companies and 800 delegates. There were 200 exhibitors coming from 19 countries/regions and 10 national and regional pavilions. More than 140 government officials from the Chinese mainland participated as visitors or exhibitors.
