Is an active holiday on the cards for 2024? In Czechia, there’s plenty of outdoor fun to inspire even the biggest sports fans or adrenaline junkies. The country might be best known (and loved!) for its fairytale capital city but beyond the magic of Prague there’s a wild side just waiting to be explored.

For a spring or summer adventure, visitors can get out and about and explore the beautiful hiking and cycling trails through breath-taking scenery or give it some pedal power by cycling along one of the many tried and tested bike routes.  Czechia is a magnet for keen hikers and the Czech trails network is considered one of the most dense in the world. Lofty peaks, crystal clear lakes, lush green countryside, it’s all here and the perfect destination for lovers of the great outdoors.

Top places to visit in Czechia for an active, outdoors holiday

Bohemian Switzerland – just GORGeous
A European Destination of Excellence  (EDEN), this beautiful pocket of the country will seduce visitors with its spectacular landscape and scenery – which can be admired from the area’s numerous lookout towers. Perfect for keen outdoor photographers hoping to catch the perfect picture from their trip.

Rock formations, sweeping countryside and its famous gorges are just some of Bohemian Switzerland’s highlights. Starting from the town of Hrensko, explorers can take the 25km circular route to the Edmund Gorge and Wild Gorge, visiting the mighty Pravčická Gate along the way. The adventure doesn’t stop there though. Only accessible by boat, you’ll be taken by rowing boat learning the weird and wonderful stories of the gorges from the local ferryman.

On top of the world in the Krkonoše Mountains
Take your outdoor break to new heights and head to the Krkonoše Mountains where you’ll find Mount Snezka, Czechia’s highest mountain. Hike to Snezka’s peak discovering underground tunnels and the mountain’s water supply system along your ascent. Reach the top and be rewarded with breath-taking views as far as the eye can see – all the way to the Polish border. For anyone not keen on the demanding hike up, there’s always the chairlift – an easier route without the climb.
On your bike in Moravia

If you prefer to saddle up and explore on two wheels, Czechia has world class cycle routes. One of the biggest and best is the Moravian Cycle Path which covers an incredible 300km stretching from the Czech-Polish state border and ending in South Moravia. The marked cycle path follows the rail tracks so if the journey gets too much for the legs, cyclists can take advantage of intercity connections that transport bicycles. They can even rent bikes from selected stations on the route.

The Moravian Cycle Path is ideal for visitors looking to see as much of the country as possible by bike – it’s quite an epic journey through historic towns, cites, landmarks, castles and gardens. There’s even the chance to explore some of the exquisite Czech wines on a bike ride, stopping off at impressive vineyards and wine cellars along the way. South Moravia is also the best place to stay for anyone wanting to cycle locally without going too far from their holiday base.
Czechia down to a tee

Adrenaline junkies look away now! If a leisurely round of golf is more your pace, Czechia has some splendid courses set in spectacular surroundings where golfers can perfect their swing. Tee off in top courses in Ostravice, or Čeladná sports complex near Ostrava. There’s also plenty of golf action close to Prague. The championship courses at Karlštejn Golf Resort are sure to be a hit with golfers, and in West Bohemia, choose from Marianske Lazne’s Royal Golf Course or the golf resort Cihelny near Karlovy Vary. With over 100 courses to choose from keen golfers won’t struggle to give the clubs an outing in Czechia!

A head for heights or slippery slopes?

Need more excitement? Thrillseekers should head for The Sky Bridge 721 in Dolní Morava. It’s the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in the world and was listed as one of the ‘world’s greatest places’ by Time magazine.

Looking for chills and thrills? There’s also the chance to go on piste for some top ski action at the Dolní Morava ski resort which also boasts the longest Bobsleigh track in the Czech Republic. Guaranteed action-packed fun for all the family.

Prague Airport continues to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Last year, 59.45% of CO₂ emissions were saved compared to 2009, when the airport first calculated its carbon footprint. After a year, the airport defended the Airport Carbon Accreditation Level 3, involving third parties, namely airlines, tenants, service providers, and others. The certification process also included verification of the carbon footprint by an independent auditor.

Soňa Hykyšová, Prague Airport Environmental Protection and ESG Director, explains the airport’s approach to the reduction of emissions saying: “Last year, for the first time, we adopted a long-term commitment to purchase green electricity in the proportion of 60%, with a gradual increase until 2030. We launched operations of the first photovoltaic power plant at the airport, located at Terminal 3. We purchased Dacia Spring electric cars and will continue purchasing electromobiles. We also continue replacing the existing lights with new energy-saving LED lighting and closely follow the development in the field of alternative fuels – both sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and hydrogen.” Prague Airport has been reducing emissions by an average of three to five thousand tons of CO2 annually.

Prague Airport wants to reach carbon neutrality by 2030 and net carbon neutrality by 2050. However, as many as 85 percent of airport emissions are generated by third parties – that is, suppliers and airlines. Therefore, the airport motivates them to reduce emissions in different ways. Prague Airport organizes the TOP Sustainable Airline contest for carriers, in which, alongside noise and emissions, the entire airline’s approach to sustainability is monitored. Air carriers are thus motivated to deploy new, modern aircraft with lower emission and noise pollution levels on routes to Prague. Emissions are also saved thanks to the change in departure procedures implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic. The specific approach to reducing CO₂ emissions in the long-term horizon will be published next year in the decarbonisation plan, which is currently being supplemented with planned investment actions and operational measures.

Subsidiaries Also Reduce Emissions

Prague Airport’s subsidiaries have also taken measures to reduce CO₂ emissions. Czech Airlines Technics has replaced the lamps on Hangar F with LED lighting and at the same time purchases green electricity. The same approach was adopted by Czech Airlines Handling, which also uses electric ground support equipment (GSE) with a commitment of a 40 percent share in 2030.

Prague Airport employees are also motivated to reduce their carbon footprint, for example, as part of the Biking to Work initiative.

The main goal of the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme is to support airport operators in their efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from various airport activities. The programme brings together hundreds of airports around the world that map their carbon footprint and implement procedures to reduce it.

At a meeting held in Madrid this month, Members of the international jury of the European Capital of Christmas unanimously decided to award the 2024 title to Brno. The impressive quality of Brno’s festive activities and their relevance to European values were just two of the deciding factors in the jury’s decision.

As well as its magical Christmas offering, the modern city of Brno has also shown considerable commitment to its own cultural heritage and global identity.

The news was a welcome addition to the city’s joy at being included in AFAR magazine’s ‘Where to go in 2024’ list. Brno was tipped as one of the top 25 destinations to visit next year.

Katarina Hobbs, CzechTourism Director for UK & Ireland said: “Brno, our second largest city in the Czech Republic is something of a hidden gem for people who might think Prague is the only place to go in Czechia” She added: “Gradually, the city is becoming more popular and growing in stature all the time. There’s just as much to see in Brno and it’s an exciting new place for people to take city breaks. It has a delightful atmosphere and visitors will be sure of a warm welcome.”

Brno has a rich cultural heritage, with a beautiful castle and a stunning cathedral, as well as modern attractions like the Moravian Gallery, one of the country’s top art museums. Brno is also home to a thriving food and wine scene.

The city of Brno offers impressive visitor attractions all year round but it really raises the bar at Christmas and the festivities are sure to be even bigger and better in its year as European Capital of Christmas.

How to get there:

Fly direct to Brno with Ryanair

Alternatively, visitors can choose to fly to Prague and take easy, reliable trains to Brno. There are regular direct flights from the UK to Prague with Jet2, Easyjet, Ryanair, BA and WizzAir

VisitPITTSBURGH has a strong vision for how to enhance and advance tourism across Allegheny County, and that vision has been brought to life with the unveiling of a new Tourism Development Plan and microsite .

“Today marks the official release of a year’s worth of data collection, research and stakeholder engagement,” said Jerad Bachar, President & CEO of VisitPITTSBURGH. “This plan was thoughtfully developed to identify strategies that will propel the tourism industry forward, while focusing on our mission to drive visitation and overall economic impact across the destination.”

The 10-year development plan includes more than 40 strategies and 80 unique action items that together form a roadmap for the development, management and marketing of tourism assets in both the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County. The plan is designed with the overall visitor experience in mind, while also identifying ways to enhance the quality of life for residents and those within the local hospitality workforce.

“We all know that Pittsburgh is a great place to call home, but now it’s time to focus on how we can work together to grow and attract more visitors,” said Mayor Ed Gainey. “I applaud the VisitPITTSBURGH team for leading the charge and developing a plan that embraces and celebrates the rich cultural diversity that makes our city great. This new plan will shine a new light on our rich cultural history as we continue our work on making Pittsburgh the most welcoming city in America.”

Bachar_Jerad

Tourism Development Plan backed by industry research and stakeholder engagement
VisitPITTSBURGH engaged Resonance Consultancy and partner HVS to conduct a multi-phase approach, including industry research, destination benchmarking and stakeholder engagement, to inform the strategies and action items found within the plan.

The first phase included a complete destination assessment of both quantitative and qualitative research related to industry trends, the hospitality market, sports and events program infrastructure, occupational analysis and more.

Throughout phase two, the project team surveyed nearly 3,000 residents and visitors to gather insights on both local and out-of-state perceptions of the destination and available tourism assets.

“Based on the engagement and insights learned, we were able to develop a long-term vision for Pittsburgh that includes a series of recommendations on how to improve the overall visitor experience, while providing new opportunities for our locals as well,” said Bachar.

Strategies in place are designed to improve and develop Pittsburgh’s experiences, connectivity and hospitality industry.

The Tourism Development Plan is divided into three strategic areas:

  • Experiences – Strategies to expand and diversify the range of assets and attractions for visitors—from accommodations to culinary, arts, culture, heritage, shopping and outdoor adventures
  • Connectivity – Strategies to improve access across the destination by exploring a range of broadened transportation modes
  • Industry – Strategies to enhance tourism and hospitality business performance, employee attraction and retention and tourism development plan governance

“The Tourism Development Plan is truly all-encompassing and provides unique action items to tackle each of these important areas from the ground up,” said Michele Meloy Burchfield, Chair of the VisitPITTSBURGH Board of Directors. “The VisitPITTSBURGH team looked holistically at Pittsburgh as a destination and included thoughtful ways we can improve our experiences for visitors, while also enhancing our infrastructure and supporting our hospitality workforce.”

New experiences set to position Pittsburgh as a world-class tourism destination
Of Pittsburgh’s 90 distinct neighbourhoods, only 10 percent are popular visitor destinations anchored by major sports stadiums, museums and cultural institutions, parks and universities. The Experiences section of the plan is designed to better position and promote our city of multitudes and enhance our in-market experience for both residents and visitors alike. Sample action items include:

  • Promote and market unique placemaking efforts that celebrate emerging cultures across the destination
  • Develop neighbourhood itineraries to encourage travellers to extend their length of stay
  • Create a museum pass designed to drive visitation to our cultural attractions

Transportation focus aims to improve connectivity among Pittsburgh’s tourism assets
When compared to other destination features, connectivity across Pittsburgh was rated as relatively poor among both residents and visitors alike. The Connectivity section of the plan evaluates and identifies new strategies to improve – from public transit and trails to air and waterway travel. Sample action items include:

  • Support a citywide wayfinding system that builds on and complements downtown signage efforts
  • Highlight, promote and improve access to trails
  • Support Pittsburgh Regional Transit Authority’s study of long-term train/BRT connection from the airport to downtown

Workforce training and development stands to make lasting impact on tourism industry
Over the last 10 years, Allegheny County has lost 11 percent of its tourism employment – more than double the loss found within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The Industry section of the plan is designed to combat and reverse that trend by focusing on the growth of labor supply and retention of hospitality workers. Sample action items include:

  • Create a marketing campaign to promote wealth and diversity of jobs within the tourism industry
  • Increase collaboration between industry and education providers to develop educational and workplace-based training programs
  • Create a digital job board for local industry positions

Action items and collaboration on strategies are already underway
“It’s no secret that this 10-year development plan will be a big lift, and that’s why we’re definitely not going at it alone,” said Bachar. “If there is one thing Pittsburghers know, it’s that we’re stronger when we work together – and that’s exactly the type of collaboration you will see as we bring more and more of these action items to life.”

Several action items found within the Tourism Development Plan are already underway, including the development of an all-new African American Tourism Advisory Council and dedicated support for the expansion and growth of culinary events and festivals.

Track the progress of these action items and more in real-time with the help of the new Tourism Development Plan microsite. This site is designed to be a public lens into the work happening across the county to grow and develop the tourism industry. To see what’s already underway, visit PittsburghTDP.com

The post Prague to celebrate 70th Anniversary of winning Nobel Prize by hosting World Chemical Congress appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Brand TD.

In 2029, it will be exactly 70 years since the first Nobel Prize was awarded to what was then Czechoslovakia. Professor Jaroslav Heyrovský received the award in 1959 for his discovery of polarography, a chemical method used to analyse solutions. Prague will symbolically celebrate this important anniversary by organizing the World Chemical Congress of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), which will take place in the Czech capital in 2029.

Prague won the opportunity to host the prestigious international event, which is, every two years, attended by several thousand experts in the field of chemistry. Its importance is accentuated by the meeting of the IUPAC General Assembly and the IUPAC Council as the highest body of the Union. In the Hague, the Netherlands, representatives of the Czech and Slovak Chemical Society and the Prague Convention Bureau, the umbrella organization for the Prague meetings industry, presented he proposal that received the strongest support in a secret ballot of delegates of all national organizations of IUPAC member states. “We ran for the World Chemical Congress two years ago already, unfortunately unsuccessfully.

I am very pleased that we successfully presented the winning proposal this year, beating the competing destinations, which were the Asian cities of Chengdu and Taipei, and Düsseldorf in Germany. I believe that in 2029 we will present an interesting congress program, the main topic of which should be “Frontiers in Chemistry: For the Harmony of Civilization with Nature”, and which will build on the long and famous scientific research tradition of Czech and Slovak chemistry,” says prof. Dr. RNDr. Pavel Matějka, Chairman of the congress and Rector of the University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague.

“The main topic and title of the congress point to the fact that today’s civilization cannot exist without the products of chemical production. However, for the sake of sustainability, it is necessary to diminish the negative effects that production and its outputs have on nature and on the natural processes,” adds prof. Jiří Vohlídal from Charles University, currently the Chairman of the Czech Chemical Society, adding: “In addition to this focus, the proposal includes a special symposium on electrochemistry to celebrate symbolically the 70th anniversary of prof. Jaroslav Heyrovský’s Nobel Prize as part of the congress.”

However, the Prague edition of the congress, which will take place at the Prague Congress Centre, will not only be exceptional for its connection to important personalities of Czech science. For the first time in the history of this event, the winning proposal for organizing the congress was submitted jointly by two national chemical societies – the Czech and the Slovak. “The joint candidacy of the Czech and Slovak Chemical Societies was one of the strengths of the proposal. This uniqueness resulted from the common history and tradition of chemistry in the once unified country. Cooperation between the two countries has been maintained to this day, at various levels, from informal collaboration and national support of joint projects to regular joint conferences in individual fields of chemistry, through organizing umbrella chemistry congresses and, last but not least, organizing such important events as the International Chemistry Olympiad.

That is why I am extremely pleased that thanks to winning this prestigious congress, we have the opportunity to jointly present the strong position of chemistry in our countries,” adds prof. Igor Lacík from the Institute of Polymers of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava, Vice-Chairman of the Congress and representative of the Slovak Chemical Society. Professor Lacík has been engaged at IUPAC for a long time and will be President of the Union’s Polymer Division from 2024 to 2027, and a member of the IUPAC Scientific Council between 2024 and 2025.

The organization of this congress will bring the Czech and the international chemical professional public the opportunity to present their recent discoveries, but also to discuss the latest trends in the field. This way, the event will contribute to the further development of chemical research in our country, the results of which will subsequently benefit the public. “At the same time, chemical processes are one of the strategic fields that the City of Prague focuses on in its Regional Innovation Strategy – RIS 3. It identifies sectors in which Prague has a comparative advantage over other destinations and in which it produces results with high added value.

Obtaining this congress means not only an immediate economic benefit for Prague in the form of the stay of 4,000 delegates for the entire week of the congress, but especially an influx of global know-how in the field, which in the long term will help to the strategic direction and future development of the metropolis. All this contributes to the internationalization of Czech and Slovak science and the application of research results in practice, which subsequently benefits the general public,” adds Ing. Michaela Smetanová, Senior Manager – Business Events at Prague Convention Bureau, who participated in presenting the congress offer of Prague and the overall implementation and organizational aspects of the proposal as part of the candidacy.

The candidacy for the World Chemical Congress was carried out with the support of the City of Prague, the CzechTourism / Czech Convention Bureau and C-IN, which, among other things, created a video clip for the candidacy inviting world personalities of chemistry to Prague for the World Chemical Congress in 2029.

Czech glass has confirmed its world-class standard and reputation again this week as Czechia’s handmade glass production has been newly inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List.

The nomination, which the Czech Republic submitted together with five other European countries, was approved by the organisation’s Intergovernmental Committee at a meeting in Botswana.

The country has enjoyed great success in 2023 when in September Žatec and the iconic Žatec hop landscape were also inscribed on the celebrated list and the first hop-growing heritage to be awarded this global label.

“Glassmaking is an important industry especially in the Liberec and Zlín regions and also in Vysočina. It is also a topic that is travelled to the Czech Republic from all over the world, and I believe that thanks to today’s inscription on the UNESCO list, even more will do so. I congratulate the glassmakers and all those who contributed to this success,” says František Reismüller, Director of the Czech Tourism Centre – CzechTourism.

The technological uniqueness of Czech glass can be seen all over the country. In the past, specifically in 2020, it was confirmed by the fact that the production of Christmas decorations made from blown glass beads was included on UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage.

Unlike in other countries, Czech glass making encompasses all techniques. In addition to the above-mentioned traditional production of Christmas decorations, it is – together with the preparation and production of the glass raw material – also blowing, grinding, painting, winding beads, making tubes, jewellery sticks and more.

Katarina Hobbs, Director of Czech Tourism Uk & Ireland commented: “Czech glass production is one of our finest traditions and it’s a proud moment to see this recognised by UNESCO. Our glass products are a real pull for visitors to Czechia and never fails to impress when they visit the wonderful factories and museums” She added: “Czech crystal and glass is more famous than some people realise. It has graced the tables of royalty, adorned the interiors of grand palaces, and been featured in prestigious exhibitions and galleries all over the world. The timeless art of glass making dates back to the 12th Century and can be found in some of the most lavish locations in the world – even the Palace of Versailles!”

Popularity of Czech crystal and glass in the international luxury market continues to grow, with serious collectors and enthusiasts worldwide.

Czech traditions continue to attract curious visitors – beer brewing, wine making, spas and wellness for starters. These have helped make Czechia a unique and desirable destination – a country that has embraced technology and innovation without forgetting its roots.

Choice Hotels EMEA, the 100% franchise focused hotel company, has  unveiled the first property within its portfolio to have undergone a major transformation as part of the group’s regional brand refresh.

Situated near Prague’s city centre, the refreshed Comfort Hotel Prague City East, which boasts a pop art theme, is aligned with Choice’s new Comfort brand experience. It stands out by providing value-driven guests offering friendly, warm and vibrant service alongside all-around efficiency at a price point guests want, in the location they want.

With franchisees having considerable flexibility in their design choices, the newly refreshed Comfort Hotel Prague City East is aligned with the new design philosophy for Comfort which is focused on the energy of colour. Pop-art decoration underlines the overall impression throughout the hotel, which is seen in bedrooms, corridors, and communal spaces, colourfully enhancing its light, bright and airy spaces.

The hotel is also the first in EMEA to showcase the brand’s signature Comfort Hub – a new multi-purpose space which is the first area guests experience on arrival. It’s where they check in and out and go for anything from a morning coffee to an evening drink, with a quiet space for working to a lounge area for socialising.

Additionally, visitors to Comfort Hotel Prague City East are now warmly welcomed by the hotel’s Roaming Comfort Crew dedicated to ensuring a memorable and personalised stay. Over the coming year, Comfort hotels in EMEA are expected to reveal their new identities, developed with support from Choice Hotels. They are encouraged to showcase and embrace local, cultural influences since local inspiration is part of the Comfort brand identity through the We Love Local! Programme.

As part of the We Love Local! Programme, four bee hives have been installed on the roof terrace of the Comfort Hotel Prague City East resulting in a bountiful harvest of 50 kilograms of honey.  The golden nectar harvested graces guests’ breakfast tables and also serves as a special token of appreciation for business partners.

Plans to add further beehives next year support the hotels’ contribution to sustainable development and fostering biodiversity which is an integral part of the properties’ “We love local” concept. Commenting on the unveiling of the new Comfort Hotel Prague City East, Choice Hotels EMEA Director of Marketing, Brand and Loyalty, Nick Bosworth said: “Last year, we embarked on an ambitious journey to re-energise the entire Choice Hotels EMEA portfolio of brands, aiming to bring clarity and definition to our valued franchisees and their guests.

“Today, the new brand ethos of our Comfort Hotels comes to life for the very first time, marking an important milestone in our commitment to helping franchisees enhance their asset value and deliver an exceptional guest experience. “We are grateful to the team at CPI Hotels and the hotel itself for the significant work they have undertaken over the past year to achieve this important milestone and know guests will love the refreshed hotel.

“As we celebrate the launch of the new Comfort Hotel Prague City East, hundreds of our properties across the region are also working hard to craft their own brand stories and hallmarks with our support. For many, design concepts are well underway and as our franchisees have flexibility within a framework with their design choices we are excited to see Comfort Hotels across EMEA launch.

“Just like Comfort Prague City East, they are poised to unveil an elevated brand experience that not only stands the test of time but also caters to the evolving needs of travellers.”

Commenting on the unveiling of the newly refreshed Comfort Hotel Prague City East, CPI Hotels CEO, Jan Kratina, said: “We are thrilled to present the vibrant transformation of Comfort Hotel Prague City East, aligning with Choice’s exciting new Comfort brand experience.

“Our commitment to providing value-driven guests with more than just a comfortable stay is exemplified in every detail of this hotel. From the pop art theme that colours our spaces to the innovative Comfort Hub, and the dedicated Roaming Comfort Crew, we are dedicated to ensuring a memorable and personalised stay for our guests.

“This marks a significant milestone in our journey to redefine hospitality, and we are excited to continue embracing and showcasing local influences through our participation in the We Love Local! programme across our hotels.”Easily reachable from Prague’s airport, the hotel is well connected to the whole city via tram and metro and with its spacious guest rooms and modern amenities, is the perfect base to explore the region.

The Comfort brand refresh responds to independent consumer research conducted in the UK, France and Germany. The findings revealed Comfort customers seek genuine hospitality and personal service. They seek a hotel with a modern design that provides a warm, vibrant and friendly place to stay with energising casual spaces for socialising, relaxing, sleeping and working. while also embracing and supporting local provenance.

The Choice Hotels EMEA portfolio now encompasses Comfort, Clarion, Quality, Sleep Inn, and the Ascend Hotel Collection – with a diverse portfolio of properties across the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and The Nordics.

Fixed fares quoted in advance, 24/7 service availability, and a fleet of (at the maximum) up to five-year-old mainly upper middle-class cars – such are the commitments of the new taxi service provider at Václav Havel Airport Prague, Uber, that has launched its operations today and already served its first customers.

Uber won the concession procedure entered by two bidders. The launch of the winner’s activities was originally scheduled in the spring. However, the unsuccessful tenderer filed an appeal with the Office for the Protection of Economic Competition of the Czech Republic, which made it impossible for the airport to finalise the tender process, temporarily blocking it. At the beginning of September, the Antimonopoly Office confirmed that Prague Airport had set the parameters of the concession procedure in accordance with the law, just as it performed the selection of the winning bidder, which became Uber.

“We are glad that the Antimonopoly Office confirmed Prague Airport proceeded correctly and in accordance with the law. In the concession procedure, we primarily emphasised the requirements of passengers, who above all want to know the price in advance. The new taxi service provider will provide its services under the constant control of the airport, focusing not only on the quality of the service, but also the price regulation compliance. All rides, even those outside of Prague, must adhere to the municipality’s maximum price regulation,” Jakub Puchalský, Member of the Prague Airport Board of Directors, said.

Based on the contractual conditions, the service provider is obliged to:

  • Quote the final price before each ride, which will be calculated by their software. The resulting fare must not exceed the agreed price, even when changing the route or waiting in a traffic jam.
  • Ensure 24/7 service availability.
  • Operate a fleet of (at the maximum) up to five-year-old mainly upper middle-class vehicles.
  • Work with drivers who will ensure the required quality of the service provided and traffic safety.
  • Ensure the drivers have all valid permits, speak Czech, and have at least a basic knowledge of English to be able to communicate with the customer. They must also wear job appropriate attire.
  • Always provide the customers with the option of contactless payments.
  • Share data (route, price) regarding each ride with the airport.

Simple Booking Process
Passengers will be able to order a taxi ride using their phone with downloaded Uber application, via the airport web interface, and at kiosks in the arrival halls at both terminals. Customers needing help or advice with booking a ride will be able to contact Uber staff at the service counters in the arrival halls of both terminals. Dispatchers will be ready to help passengers directly in front of the terminal buildings to facilitate their car finding and boarding.

“We are thrilled to officially launch our cooperation with Václav Havel Airport Prague and bring passengers a top-quality service under a brand they know and trust. We have been working intensively on the product over the past months. We believe that we will meet the expectations of passengers who are already looking forward to this service and at the same time provide foreign visitors with the best and most effective transport option from the airport as soon as they arrive in the Czech Republic,” Štěpán Šindelář, Uber Operations Manager for the Czech Republic, said.

It will also be possible to pair a ride with a specific car through a PIN code, sent through to the passenger upon ordering their ride. They will then be directed to the first car standing in front of the terminal. The company uses this technology at other airports, where waiting times have been reduced by an average of 50 percent. There will also be an intelligent destination prompter available with the option of entering multiple stops. The app itself supports more than 100 languages. The language of the application follows the language settings in the operating system of the device used. The application automatically translates messages between the driver and the passenger, thereby breaking down language barriers.

The taxi service provider is obliged to adjust the number of available cars at the airport based on the current demand to ensure the service readiness and avoid long waits by passengers. At the customer’s request, the taxi dispatcher will make available car seats for families with children. The conditions of cooperation also include the obligation of transportation for persons with reduced mobility and orientation.

When drafting the concession procedure conditions, the airport also took into account a considered approach to the environment. The new taxi service provider has committed itself to an increasing share of electric cars in the fleet servicing the airport. In the last year of the contract validity, at least one in ten orders will be handled using an electric car. Passengers will also have the opportunity to rate the service and the driver retrospectively, where a poor rating may prevent the driver from further providing the service at the airport.

Beautiful natural scenery, tropical rainforest, and green tea aroma. Prague is the sixth European city to which China Airlines operates direct flights from Taipei. With a direct connection to the Taiwanese capital, Taipei, Prague now stands alongside Frankfurt, Amsterdam, London, Rome, and Vienna. The connection is available twice a week and the carrier uses Airbus A350-900 aircraft to operate the Taipei – Prague route.

Prague Airport has been striving for a long-haul route to East Asia for several years. Its Chairman of the Board of Directors, Jiří Pos, therefore considers its launch to be a tremendous success, saying: “With this new connection, we will also boost inbound tourism.” Before the pandemic, i.e., in 2019, over 190 thousand passengers from Taiwan visited the Czech Republic. Last year, there were only 13,791 Taiwanese visitors, which meant a drop of almost 93 percent. A direct flight between Prague and Taipei could change this. “In addition, the connection will offer passengers from Prague the possibility of convenient transfers to a number of China Airlines destinations in Asia and the Pacific.”

According to China Airlines President, Kao Shing-Hwang, China Airlines is the only carrier to offer non-stop flights between Taiwan and the Czech Republic. The new Prague route will encourage bilateral business, trade and tourism. Kao also expects strong interest from the transit market for Japan, Korea and Vietnam, allowing more Asian travelers to pass through Taiwan on their way to and from the Czech Republic and thus enhancing Taiwan’s status as a regional transit hub.

“Direct air connections, their frequency and quality are of vital importance for tourism. We believe that thanks to the Prague – Taipei flights, the Czech Republic will once again be discovered more by tourists not only from Taiwan, but from all over Asia, who represent a very interesting tourism segment. If we take the average spending of tourists from China, Japan and South Korea in our country, we can see a gradual return of these foreign guests. While in 2019 they spent a total of CZK 4,860 per person per day in the Czech Republic, a year later it was CZK 3,888 and in 2021 it was even only CZK 2,170. Last year, the situation began to improve – the average spending of these Asian travellers in our country was CZK 4,321 per person per day,” says Jan Herget, director CzechTourism, adding: “The good news is that, as well as spending, the number of travellers from Asia is growing. The data on hotel accommodation in the Czech Republic from May this year shows that the number of Taiwanese tourists increased by 2,753 percent year-on-year, from 393 to 11,213.

Taiwan is not only a country of modern technology, but also offers many tourist attractions. In Taipei, the capital of three million inhabitants, there is the Palace Museum, which preserves rare collections of artefacts from the Forbidden City. Next year, the impressive local skyscraper, which is the second tallest building in the world and bears the number 101 in its name after the number of floors, will celebrate its twentieth anniversary. The island abounds in wild tropical nature with gorges, mountains, lakes, and thermal springs. Almost a tenth of the area of Taiwan is formed by national parks.

In terms of routes to Asia and the Middle East, Prague Airport currently offers connections to Amman, Dubai, Doha, Kuwait, Muscat, Riyadh, and Seoul.

Working with EY Transaction Advisory, Prague Airport, a joint stock company, has started the process of seeking a strategic partner for its subsidiary of Czech Airlines Technics, a joint stock company (CSAT). The primary goal is to increase the competitiveness of the CSAT company and ensure its attractiveness for customers.

“The process will start with reaching out to potential partners who are also active in the field of aviation repair and maintenance. Several rounds of negotiations will follow, narrowing down the number of potential partners and selecting the most suitable one. We plan to have the process, while closely cooperating with our sole shareholder, concluded in the first half of next year,” Jiří Pos, Chairman of the Prague Airport Board of Directors, stated, adding: “Fostering the optimal form of partnership, the degree of future synergies with Prague Airport, and the plan of development activities will be an essential part of the evaluation of the offers received.”

Czech Airlines Technics was established on 1 August 2010 as a subsidiary of Czech Airlines. In April 2012, the company’s sole shareholder became Český Aeroholding, a.s. and since October 2018, as a result of a national merger by acquisition, its sole shareholder has been Prague Airport, a joint stock company. Czech Airlines Technics, the former technical department of the Czech national carrier, has almost a century-long history and experience with hangar maintenance of aircraft, especially with the maintenance of jet aircraft of various manufacturers and aircraft equipment. The company employs over 600 qualified technicians, engineers, and administrative staff and guarantees the high quality of the services provided and the work performed, with an emphasis on strict compliance with safety standards.

Prague Airport is preparing for a strong summer season, during which, according to current estimates, it expects to handle over three million passengers. Passengers should get ready for their flight ahead of time and arrive at the airport at least two hours before departure.

“A demanding summer season is again upon us. We have been getting ready for this for a long time. We launched a recruitment campaign and invited interested parties to two recruitment days at the airport, during which we presented various job positions to them. We work closely with travel agencies and inform passengers on how to best prepare for their departure. We are also launching projects which will make the demanding summer traffic easier for us in the coming years, for example, replacements of X-rays at security screening points,” Jiří Pos, Chairman of the Prague Airport Board of Directors, said.

The recruitment campaign covers job positions across the entire airport. Applicants can find all open positions on the Prague Airport’s website pracenaletisti.jobs.cz.“It has proven useful for us to provide passengers with information on how to prepare for their departure well in advance. We are therefore running our extensive educational campaign again this year, asking passengers to arrive at the airport in good time, which should be at least two hours before departure. We also ask them to go straight to security or passport control after checking in,” Eva Krejčí, Director of Communications, added.

CzechTourism will be meeting and networking with representatives from top tour operators, airlines, media and key stakeholders from the travel industry to discuss cooperation and collaboration opportunities to promote Czechia in the Middle East region.

Travel from UAE to the Czech Republic has seen a surge in 2022 with a year on year increase of 330.61% in average number of nights over 2022 and 2021. In 2022, Czech Republic welcomed over 84,000 number of overnight stays from travellers of Saudi Arabia for an average length of stay of 6 days.

Marek Kroutil – international markets manager, CzechTourism added “We are very excited and looking forward to being back at the global prestigious event – ATM 2023 after three years post the Covid-19 recession and be a part of the travel fair. We are very flattered to see the numbers growing back to the Czechia from this region. Travellers from the Middle East visit the destination for spa, summer holidays with family, MICE groups as well as with our efforts to promote other products like Christmas markets, we have noticed that winter activities are slowly gaining popularity too. I am proud that our spa towns were awarded with the UNESCO as the great spa towns of Europe and gulf travellers consider Czechia as a preferred spa and wellness destination.”

CzechTourism in the Middle East is targeting the country in the region as a premium destination targeting families, experiential travellers, MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) and leisure travellers through various B2B and B2C activities like destination workshops, roadshows, familiarization trips and joint collaborations with travel agents, airlines and media.

Brno, South Moravia, Cesky Krumlov, Spa triangle of West Bohemia- Karlovy Vary, Františkovy lázně and Mariánské Lázně, are some of the cities and places in the Czechia promoted beyond Prague through strategic activities in this market.

In April this year, Czech Tourism Authority has also launched a dedicated website that features a range of informative articles, guides and resources on sustainable travel, eco-friendly accommodation, green transportation. This is an approach focused on sustainability in the Czechia aiming to promote sustainable and responsible tourism practices and to raise awareness about the importance of protecting its natural and cultural heritage.

Hotel Properties: Barcelo Hotel, The Julius

Spa Resorts and Hotels – Orea Hotels, Jáchymov – Axxos Hotels, Grand Hotel Pupp, Savoy Westend Hotel

For anyone feeling burned out, stressed out, or generally under par, it could be high time for a health and wellbeing blitz. In Czechia the arrival of spa season is more than just a date to book a massage – it’s a happening! In the spa towns of the Czech Republic vibrant opening ceremonies take place with all the pomp you can imagine. Part of the celebrations include the age-old custom of blessing the springs.

With a wealth of natural resources and highly trained therapists, Czech wellness resorts are renowned the world over. Czech spas are some of the oldest and most opulent in Europe – and they are waiting to ease you into the new season.

If a spring getaway to the Czech Republic is on the cards, why not make the most of your trip and restore your body, mind and soul.Choose from elegant spas, wellness hotels, historic chateaux or even a rural farm for your treatment, and leave all your cares behind.

An exciting new addition planned for 2023 is the opening of the Imperial Spa exhibition.

Imperial Spa. Currently under reconstruction, the main objective is to reconstruct the building and make it accessible to the public. The building will become a social-cultural centre featuring an Imperial Spa exhibition where visitors will be able to learn more about spa traditions and see its original spa facilities.

Health and relaxation: Are you ready to experience Czech wellness?
What is so special about Czech spas? The secret of the Czech spa industry lies in the magic blend of ancient traditions and top class medical care and pulls in a stream of visitors year after year. This is especially true of the ‘Spa Triangle’. The fairytale spa towns of West Bohemia have earned themselves a reputation as some of the finest in the world.

Karlovy Vary
The most well known town in the West Bohemia Spa Triangle, Karlovy Vary is arguably one of Europe’s most beautiful spa destinations. The town follows the Teplá stream and it’s common place to see locals filling jugs from the thermal springs – known for their healing properties. Health and wellbeing are high on the agenda here. As well as being a hotbed of wellness, Karlovy Vary is the epitome of architectural splendour with its imposing colonnades and historical buildings each with a story to tell.

Karlovy Vary spa season opening celebrations take place 5-7 May 2023.

Undoubtedly one of the most charming spa towns, together with Karlovy Vary and Františkovy Lázně, Mariánské Lázně  forms one of the most attractive regions of the country, known as the West Bohemian Spa Triangle. The therapeutic process of Balneology is popular here. The water based treatments are used to promote relaxation, reduce joint and muscle pain, improve circulation and stimulate the immune system.

Mariánské Lázně spa season opening celebrations take place 12-14 May 2023

Frantiŝkovy Lázně
The smallest of the West Bohemia Spa Triangle, Frantiŝkovy Lázně was once described as ‘heaven on earth’ by the famous German poet, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Boasting graceful spa houses offering a host of procedures to de-stress the mind and rejuvenate weary bodies, it’s another ‘must-see’ place to visit in the Czech Republic.

Frantiŝkovy Lázně spa season opening celebrations take place 20 May 2023.

Another wellness venue likely to be popular this year is  Svata Katerina Resort. An exciting alternative to the traditional spa, this countryside haven is located on the border between Bohemia and Moravia. It’s the ultimate retreat for visitors looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It offers an extensive list of treatments and packages and it’s the sort of place where you can leave your cares at the door and pick them up on the way out.

Teplice is also a destination that should be on any spa lover’s wish list. The oldest spa in the Czech Republic, Teplice is known as the ‘little Paris of Bohemia’ and boasts impressive spa buildings, beautiful parks and gardens – nice backdrop for your holiday snaps!

The wellness appeal of Czech spas is powerful stuff – it’s the gold star level of pampering all set against a fairytale backdrop.

The capital of the Czech Republic has been ranking among the most popular meetings destinations in the world for a long time. The Prague Convention Bureau helps organizers from all over the world with the organization of congresses and conferences. The organization, which fosters the promotion of Prague as a congress destination, celebrated the 15th anniversary of its foundation on April 3. During its existence, it has gained almost a thousand congresses and conferences in the hundred-spired city of Prague, attended by more than 410,000 delegates.

The Prague Convention Bureau was established by its member entities and picked up on the activities of the Prague Association of Congress Tourism (PAKT). Nowadays, the Prague Convention Bureau’s membership base includes sixty entities such as hotels, professional event organizers, congress centres, restaurants and social venues, and providers of related services (carriers, AV suppliers, catering companies and many others).

Over the past 15 years, the Prague Convention Bureau and its partners participated in the acquisition of a total of 846 congresses, conferences, and corporate events. A total of 410,486 delegates attended them, generating nearly one million room nights. With the average price of a hotel room, which amounted to CZK 1,960 (ca EUR 79) over the last ten years, this meant spendings of almost two billion crowns (ca EUR 80 million), and that only from the accommodation. Including other related services used in the destination, they amount to CZK 8.4 billion, which means a contribution to public budgets of approximately CZK 3.3 billion.

The Prague Convention Bureau’s Ambassador Program also significantly helps with acquisition of international congresses and conferences. It serves as a base for so-called congress ambassadors, i.e., professors, scientists, physicians, and other experts who act as professional guarantors of events heading to Prague. The Ambassador Program was introduced by the Prague Convention Bureau two years after the organization’s establishment. As part of the program, in cooperation with the City of Prague, the annual Ambassador Awards recognize important events and their ambassadors for their significant contribution to the development of Prague meetings industry and to sharing know-how in the area.

In addition to the Prague municipality, the Prague Convention Bureau also cooperates with other organizations dealing with the meetings industry or tourism in general. The long-term partners include, for example, the Prague City Tourism, CzechTourism with Czech Convention Bureau and Prague Airport. This network of closely cooperating entities helps to create an ideal environment to acquire international events and also present the destination in aligned style.

“Despite the last three very difficult years, when the organization of congresses and conferences was complicated or even halted by the pandemic, we managed to acquire important international events to Prague. Thanks to them, local experts across various areas have gained invaluable know-how, which they would only acquire in other, complicated and costly ways,” says Roman Muška, Director of the Prague Convention Bureau, and continues: “In addition to other tools, grants for the meetings industry, which have been allocated annually since 2014, significantly help us in obtaining congresses and conferences. Over the time, the City of Prague has provided support to approximately 150 major international meetings. The funds invested by the city in the form of grants are then returned to the destination many times over in the form of spending by individual congress delegates. Moreover, these expenses are several times higher than those made by average leisure tourists.”

The Prague Convention Bureau uses a number of analytical tools to monitor the development of meetings industry in Prague. One of them is the regular collection of statistical data. “As the only organization in the capital city of Prague, we collect comprehensive data mapping the meetings industry in the destination. We monitor not only the number of events and delegates, but also the proportion of local and international events, the type and focus of the event, or source markets,” adds Roman Muška. The statistical data are then utilized not only to evaluate the performance of the congress industry, but also to determine the future activities of the Prague Convention Bureau. Thanks to the data collection, a new medium-term strategy for the future development of meetings Prague could be presented last year.

Among other things, the Prague Convention Bureau helps event organizers to obtain letters of support and auspices, as well as congress fares –Prague public transportation for congress and conference participants free of charge. Over the past 15 years, the Prague Convention Bureau has provided this support to a total of 430 events. The organizers can also benefit from the Prague Convention Bureau’s wide media database, which, together with the press service, will provide media coverage for their event both locally and internationally. During its existence, the Prague Convention Bureau has presented meeting Prague and events held in the city through in than 3,400 articles in Czech and foreign media worth more than five million euros (more than 127 million crowns).

What do you call our country which is set in the heart of Europe? This topic has been discussed for many years by the government, language experts, international organisations, associations and the public in general. The conclusion is clear: Czechia and the Czech Republic are synonymous; in both cases they are official names. The decision on whether to use the shorter or longer version depends on the area and whether there is an obligation attached to the state designation.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), the longer name, Czech Republic, must be used only in official government documents, in the names of embassies, official correspondence, powers of attorney or in contractual practice, including declarations, instruments of ratification, memoranda, etc. This is based, inter alia, on the MFA’s guidelines for embassies, the rest is summarised here.

The Czechia (Česko) brand will be used in all other cases. It is more practical and less formal. As a shorter version of our country’s marking.  It fits better, for example, on signs accompanying official meetings at the highest political level or meetings of international organisations, as well as on presentation or promotional materials such as large advertising signs at trade fairs. Czechia (Česko) also works better in informal communication and correspondence as well as in literary works, newspaper articles, etc. Non-ceremonial political speeches are more acceptable to the general public with Czechia, partly because they tend to be simply shorter and less distant. It is the same case with the jerseys and other clothing of people representing the state in culture, science, sports and other spheres. For example, the Czech Olympic Committee has already switched to the short version Česko/Czechia. In summary: The Czechia (Česko) brand will be used for press and other materials presenting domestic achievements, historical events and personalities. This applies to promotional printed materials and items as well as for private entities.

Consensus on country designations is especially important for tourism. Among other things, the MFA is convening a Commission for a unified presentation of the Czech Republic abroad. It will be attended by the representatives of relevant ministries, Czech Centres, the House of Foreign Cooperation, the Czech Olympic Committee, CzechInvest, CzechTrade, CzechTourism agencies and other agencies. It is there where the rebranding issue will be discussed and unified, especially pertaining to how the country is to be represented abroad.

The first sign of this change can be seen in the name of the Czech Tourist Board´s portal (Česká centrála cestovního ruchu) from Visit Czech Republic to Visit Czechia. This will be followed up after a mutual agreement between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Regional Development will be signed. The rebranding of promotional and information materials, including presentation at trade fairs will be the first sign of this change. Always keeping in mind the efficient, effective and economical use of state budget resources.

Language Short name
Czech Česko
English Czechia
French Tchéquie (la)
Spanish Chequia
Ruština Чехия
Arabic تشيكيا
Chinese 捷克

In conclusion: The shortened name of the Czech Republic, i.e. Czechia, has been part of the UN databases since 2016 (United Nations) – UNGEGN (United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names) and UNTERM (United Nations Terminology Database). And since last September, it has also been part of the European Union database. Including the language options below.

One of the most populous and technologically advanced cities of the world – monuments, modern architecture, shopping, beautiful panoramas, cultural events, and great food – Seoul has it all. From 27 March 2023, Prague Airport will once again offer a direct connection with Asia, provided by Korean Air. This regular service was last in operation in March 2020.

The resumption of the long-haul connection is one of the top priorities for Jiří Pos, Chairman of the Prague Airport Board of Directors: “This is an important milestone not only on the way to resuming operations and returning to the 2019 figures, but also in terms of building a network of direct routes to Asia. Korea is one of the markets with the highest demand within the Asian region,” Mr. Pos said.

“At the centre of the airline’s Central European network, Prague is a flagship destination that boasts centuries of rich history and cultural heritage. The service resumption will give us an opportunity to pick up where we left off in fostering active exchanges between the two countries.” Mr. Park Jeong Soo, Managing Vice President and Head of Passenger Network, noted.

Demand-pending Frequency Increases

Initially, the route will be operated three times a week, every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, with the option of increasing the frequency to four weekly flights during the summer season based on the demand trends and tendencies. Passengers will fly aboard Boeing 777-300ERs aircraft with 291 seats (64 in Business Class, 227 in Economy Class). The route will ensure the currently missing capacities are significantly boosted – not only to Korea, but also, thanks to connecting flights from Seoul, to other destinations in Asia with a traditionally strong demand, for example, Thailand, Japan, Vietnam, and even Indonesia or Australia.

According to data from the Czechtourism agency and its director Jan Herget, almost 400 thousand Korean tourists visited the Czech Republic in 2019. “We firmly believe that thanks to the direct route and the gradual opening of Asian markets after the Covid-19 pandemic, there will be a recovery of tourism between Korea and the Czech Republic, and a gradual return to the 2019 numbers. While in 2019, we recorded 387 thousand arrivals of tourists from the Republic of Korea, a year later, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, only 42 thousand Koreans arrived. In 2021, the number dropped even more, to eight thousand visitors. Tourists from Asia are key for the Czech tourism industry for their high creditworthiness. The average daily spending is around four thousand crowns,” Mr. Herget added.

“The connection between Prague and Seoul is the result of the coordinated activities of all key stakeholders, for which we are very happy, because it will bring travellers from Asia, who are currently absent in the city, back to Prague. In 2019, more than 270 thousand tourists from South Korea visited the capital. Last year, we have recorded less than 40 thousand,” František Cipro, Chairman of the Prague City Tourism Board of Directors, commented.

Successful Pre-Covid Route

In 2019, the connection from Prague to Seoul was very successful. In total, over 190 thousand passengers travelled between Prague and Seoul in both directions throughout the year.

Czech Republic is celebrating 30 years since it opened its doors to visitors from around the world.

On Jan 1, 1993, what was the former Czechoslovakia split into two – one half became Slovakia and the country we know today as the Czech Republic was formed from the other half. As the new nation became more accessible to the world, the Czech Republic became a hot spot destination for overseas travellers.

Over three decades, the Czech Republic has seen a steady rise in visitor numbers. By 2019 this figure had jumped to 495,728 UK visitors before the world came to a standstill as a result of the pandemic in 2020. Today the Czech Republic is seeing a steep curve up to full recovery.

A constant flow of curious tourists have fallen in love with the place. In particular, the capital city of Prague has become a firm favourite – especially among UK visitors. Latterly, other parts of the country have grown in popularity. Places like Brno, the foodie Mecca of the Czech Republic, Pilsen, home of the original Pilsner beer and Cesky Krumlov, magical UNESCO gem are on the radar for fans of the European city break.

30 years of the Czech Republic’s traditions

Czech traditions are integral to the country’s appeal as well as its identity. Culture and gastronomy play a significant role and continue to attract visitors looking for a taste of Czech heritage.

Aging like a good wine

South Moravia is the hot spot for discerning wine lovers. The region’s quality wines have been awarded gold and silver medals from some of the industry’s top judges. Nobody goes thirsty here! Visitors are welcome to enjoy guided degustation sessions in one of hundreds of local wine cellars, explore the countryside on a bike, or visit the Garden of Europe, UNESCO protected Lednice-Valtice complex.

Here for the beer?

Czechs are known as a beer-loving nation though and the country’s famous beer making tradition saw another milestone reached in 2022 as it was the 180th anniversary of the Pilsner Urquell brewery. In 2023 Pilsner Urquell: The Original Beer Experience interactive museum in Prague will open its doors to its first visitors.

Restore your well-being

With wellness holidays on the rise, it’s easy to see the allure of the Czech Republic’s spa towns. The magic of ancient traditions and top quality medical care is a massive draw for weary tourists hoping to soothe body, mind and soul. Czech spa traditions take a standard wellness stay to a whole new level as it focuses on actual healing by natural resources such as mineral springs, peat baths, and use of mineral gas. The top quality care is provided in West Bohemian Spa triangle that was added to the UNESCO heritage list in 2021. On 1st December 2022  another Czech footprint in UNESCO intangible heritage list was announced – the tradition of timber rafting, that can be experienced by visitors in Cesky Krumlov.

30 years of action-packed adventures

For active holidaymakers, the Czech Republic is the ultimate paradise – particularly for hikers. Hiking is hugely popular and the Czech trails network is considered one of the most dense in the world with its 40 000 km of marked trails, where Bohemian Switzerland or Jizera Mountains take the lead. Czech Trail is the first of the long-distance trails in Czechia added to the international FarOut app. This impressive 2000 km circular track takes adventure seekers along the mountainous border of the Czech Republic as well as the peaceful Czech wine country South Moravia. More adrenaline needed? The Sky Bridge 721 in Dolni Morava is the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in the world and recently enjoyed worldwide attention when Time magazine listed it as one of the ‘world’s greatest places’.

Home to historical cities, world-renowned spas, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, breath-taking countryside and more, the Czech Republic is a land of living traditions and a destination that continues to seduce travellers from around the globe. Like a fine wine, it’s improving with age – here’s to another 30 years.

Happy birthday Czechia!

Prague Airport continues to provide a safe experience for all travellers as confirmed by the ACI Airport Health Accreditation (AHA) Certificate, re-assigned to Prague Airport for the high level of adopted goals and implemented measures in the area of health, which ensure increased safety of passengers flying through Prague. The Certificate appreciates the fact that the set standards meet the requirements of international organisations in the aviation industry.

Luis Felipe de Oliveira, ACI World Director General, stated in the reaccreditation letter: “After reviewing the evidence presented through our evaluation process, your airport has demonstrated an admirable continuation of its efforts to provide a safe airport experience for all travellers which is in line with the recommended health measures established in the ACI Aviation Business Restart and Recovery guidelines and ICAO Council Aviation Recovery Task Force Recommendations, along with industry best practices.”

Prague Airport has maintained its accreditation for the next 12 months. “Although protective measures applied to travel were gradually relaxed in the Czech Republic and elsewhere in Europe, we still observed the set processes and procedures. Some of the measures are still pursued as recommendations, such as a respirator in closed areas of the airport.

I am extremely happy that travelling is slowly returning to its old ways without fear, that we are returning to the path towards a promising future in which a safe place like the airport plays a very important role,” Jakub Puchalský, Member of the Prague Airport Board of Directors, said.

‘Timber Rafting’, a centuries-old Czech tradition associated with building rafts and navigating them across rivers, was approved for the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List last week. On 1st December, the nomination was accepted by the Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection of the Intangible Cultural Heritage at its 17th session in Morocco.

The multinational nomination was jointly submitted by six European countries: Czech Republic, Latvia, Germany, Austria, Spain and Poland, who coordinated the nomination’s processing. In the Czech Republic, Vltavan Čechy – which brings together timber rafting associations on the Vltava River – the National Institute of Folk Culture, the Ministry of Culture and others prepared the nomination.

Jan Herget, Director of the CzechTourism Office, said: The Czech Republic now has eight items on UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage list, which makes a total of 31 entries in UNESCO. Considering Czech’s inhabitant per kilometres squared, this makes us one of the most interesting countries to visit”. He added that “In addition to the rafting registered today, the handmade production of beaded Christmas decorations was recognised by UNESCO in 2020, as well blueprint production, puppetry, falconry, rides of the kings in Slovácko, carnival tours and masks in Hlinecko, and Slovak verbuňk”.

The Timber Rafting nomination encompasses the traditional knowledge and skills associated with building rafts and navigating rivers. This includes expertise such as the craftsmanship required for construction of a raft and the knowledge associated with navigation of the river. However, the nomination further incorporates other culture and customs related to the tradition, including specific rafting vocabulary imprinted in swimming songs and slang.

Although rafting died out as a form of transport after World War Two due the construction of dam systems on the Vltava River, the traditions associated with it are still alive and will be passed down to younger generations. Timber rafting, which is a new addition to UNESCO from today, can be experienced across Czech. In Český Krumlov, you can try out an authentic wooden rafting experience. Advent cruises on the Vltava river have their own charm, and if you combine it with a visit to the rafting museum, for example, you’re sure to be both interested and educated, says Veronika Janečková, Director of the Product Management and Regional Cooperation Department of the Czech Tourist Authority.

Travellers will no longer need to fill in an arrival form or submit proof of vaccination or a previous infection when returning from abroad. However, it is still recommended travellers to verify the conditions of transport (including proof of infectivity, i.e. test, vaccination, illness) directly with the agreed public transport carrier (plane, bus, train).

Jan Herget, director at CzechTourism, said: “The Czech Republic has maintained its place in the world’s top ten – between Ireland and Canada. This topic is important in the marketing communication of the destination across segments, both towards the tourists themselves and especially at the level of B2B marketing, when it is necessary to assure our partners from large travel agencies or conference organisers that the Czech Republic is an objectively safe place for their clients.”

More than 400 destinations around the world now hold the World Travel & Tourism Council’s (WTTC) ‘Safe Travels’ stamp, with New Zealand, Switzerland, and Oman among the latest major destinations to adopt the globally recognised stamp.

WTTC, which has been continuously leading the private sector in the efforts to rebuild global consumer confidence and encourage the return of safe international travel, made history when it launched the world’s first ever global safety and hygiene stamp just over one year ago.

The stamp, which has been crucial to restoring confidence in travellers and revive the global Travel & Tourism sector, has now also been adopted by major destination countries such as Trinidad & Tobago, Madagascar, Samoa and Réunion Island.

Julia Simpson, president and CEO of WTTC said: “We are delighted that our Safe Travels stamp continues to go from strength to strength and has been adopted by destinations from every corner of the world.

“From Portugal to Puerto Rico, Sri Lanka to Slovenia, Thailand to Tunisia, our stamp is now recognised around the globe. This is testimony to the hard work and dedication of all those involved in making our stamp work for both destinations and holidaymakers. This sets a standard of health and safety protocols so visitors can travel safe in the knowledge that a destination is following the highest standards.”

According to WTTC’s 2020 Economic Impact Report (EIR), in 2019, travel and tourism contributed 10.4% to global GDP and supported 334 million jobs (one in 10 jobs across the world). However, following a year of global lockdowns and closed borders, some 62 million jobs in Travel & Tourism were lost around the world, and the sector’s contribution to global GDP slumped by US$4.5 trillion (-49.1%).

Czech government is now offering CZK 4,000 (USD 180) per person off a Czech spa holiday. The Czech Republic is home to some of the oldest and most prestigious spas in Europe, and with tourist numbers considerably down on last year, the Czech government has announced a package worth over GBP 34 million (USD 44.76 million) to help stimulate its historic health tourism industry.

Originally aimed specifically at Czech residents, discounts are now available to UK residents as travellers begin to enjoy their first post-COVID holidays. The discount will be available to anyone booking a ‘curative, preventative stay’ of at least six nights and five cures, taking place in a Czech spa facility by the end of 2020.

Many of the spas included in this scheme are located within the West Bohemian Spa Triangle, home to the world’s highest concentration of curative water springs. For centuries these springs have helped cure respiratory diseases and Czech spas are already developing treatment programmes for those recovering from COVID-19. Now is the perfect time for a Czech spa break – the country is home to more than 30 spas catering to every need, and with tourist numbers at a minimum, visitors will have ample space to relax and unwind while benefiting from top balneology experts, highly qualified medical staff and the highest number of certificate holders among EU member states.

After the World Health Organisation announced COVID-19 as a pandemic and cases rise to an unstoppable rate, more countries go into lockdown.

Latest numbers revealed that 169,610 are affected by the new coronavirus and tallied 6,518 deaths. Meanwhile, 77,776 patients have recovered from the illness. Countries began sealing their borders in an attempt to contain the virus by lessening the movement of people. The idea of lockdown started in Wuhan, China – the epicentre of the pandemic.

Italy, Denmark, France, Iran, Israel and Spain are some of the countries that announced a “lockdown,” which restricts the travel of the people, bans all non-essential travel, close down non-essential establishment, and impose strict social distancing.

In the Philippines, the National Capital Region, where its capital Manila is located, is sealed off. Other provinces ordered partial lockdowns.

Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia closed their borders to foreign visitors and that all non-citizens will be banned from entering.

Lithuania announced plans to introduce border checks at the frontiers with Poland and Latvia. Russia has also closed borders with Norway and Poland. In the Pacific, New Zealand announced that incoming passengers, including citizens, will be required to isolate themselves for 14 days.

The United States has declared national emergency banning international flights and closed down parks and museums.

A destination where history and culture meet exceptional technology and modernism, Prague has undergone a radical change over the last two decades. Having celebrated its 10th anniversary this year, Prague Convention Bureau (PCB) is building awareness of the city as an ideal congress destination and assisting both foreign and local event organisers to support the economic development of the Czech capital. In a freewheeling discussion with Roman Muška, managing director of the Prague Convention Bureau, he talks about what lies ahead for the convention space in the city.

Roman Muška, managing director of Prague Convention Bureau

TD: The bureau recently completed 10 years. What are the key milestones achieved in this period?

The Prague Convention Bureau was founded in April 2008. The journey till date has been exciting. 2018 was another recordbreaking year for Prague. We welcomed the highest number of events in the history of Czech Statistical Office’s monitoring: 4,534. That is 2.2 % more than in the record year of 2016. Prague meetings industry was extremely successful last year in its international ranking too. In the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) ranking, Prague was ranked ninth. Over the ten years (2008 – 2018), we have participated in acquiring more than 630 events with the attendance of almost 293,000 delegates. They have generated a total of 620 thousand room nights worth of over CZK 1.2 billion (USD 52.37 million).

What are the new initiatives at the bureau this year?

We focused more on developing our Ambassador Programme – a strategic programme focused on promotion of the Congress Ambassadors – local representatives of international professional associations in Prague and the Czech Republic. Within the programme, we annually hold the Ambassador Awards Evening. It is an occasion when doctors, scientists and other leading specialists who represent the Czech Republic and Prague in international professional associations and have significantly contributed to expert events being held in the Czech capital are awarded. In April 2019, we organised its 10th awards ceremony and unveiled its website. Since the inception of this programme in 2010, more than 40 congress ambassadors have been awarded.

Prague has been a popular convention destination. What is your contribution in bringing an ever-increasing number of events to the city?

Our goal is to present the city as the ideal meeting destination through our sales and marketing tools. We regularly join the bidding process together with our partners and congress ambassadors, attend trade show, MICE workshops and organise various roadshows mainly in Europe and Americas. We also promote the city online (via social media and news) and offline (in cooperation with various magazines) and cooperate with other representatives of leisure and business tourism in Prague with the aim to multiply the effect of the communication.

How do you promote sustainable conventions in the city?

We joined the GDS index two years ago and currently are working on a strategy regarding sustainable events in Prague. Our members and partners are constantly improving their offerings and services and you can find a range of tools and steps they have individually taken to help the environment – from catering (less plastic, using local products), through separation of waste, green transportation (bike and car sharing, efficient public transportation) to legacy, charity programmes etc.

What are your plans in the next few years to take the bureau to new heights?

We would like to create a new strategy for the sustainable meetings, we are preparing more campaigns including those promoting newly opened and renovated venues, conference centres and hotels. Going forward, we would further develop the close cooperation with our members, partners and representatives of the city in order to meet the demanding requirements of our clients.

The Czech Republic is currently merging agencies promoting and developing tourism, investment and trade into a new entity under a new innovation strategy.

The newly appointed managing director of CzechTourism, Jan Herget, talks about how the organisation is looking at promoting Czech Republic beyond Prague this summer as it pilots a new concept titled ‘the unexplored touristic gems’ and discusses the road map for this year.

Jan Herget, managing director, CzechTourism

TD: What is the current status and popularity of Czech Republic for various markets?

European tourists constitute the majority of visitors in the Czech Republic. In 2018, two million of the eleven million incoming tourists were Germans. And, the number has been steadily growing as the Czech Republic is part of the border-free Schengen area. Asia is a more dynamic market; the growth has been in double digits over past three years. Our Asian guests tend to spend shorter periods with us than Europeans, they seem to be captured by the ‘fairy-tale architecture’ common to many Czech cities, and they also appreciate Czech nature reserves.

The Middle Eastern clientele is coming mostly for longer and to spend their time in Czech spa towns, the tradition of which spans from the 18 century until now—there used to be British kings or Russian Tsars spending their holidays in Bohemian spas. In addition, there are many visitors coming from Russia and North American which we consider key markets for us.

“We are thinking big!”

How active and engaged are you in the Indian, UK and South Asia market at present?

Last year, there were over 550,000 British visiting the Czech Republic. The growth of visitors from India (95,000) and Australia (86,000), for example, has been slowly gaining momentum over the past several years. In order to generate incoming tourism from the Indian subcontinent and South-Eastern Asia, the CzechTourism markets incentive, convention and ‘flexible independent traveller’ products including products aimed at families with children.

An important aspect to achieve is an increase in volume of tourists is, of course, new flight connectivity. CzechTourism and its strategic partner – Prague Airport – are developing direct flights to and from USA, Thailand, Japan, India, near East and CIS countries.

What is your strategy to bolster share in outbound travel market?

Tourism, like most other industries, needs to innovate in order to grow. The Czech Republic is currently merging agencies promoting and developing tourism, investment and trade into a new entity under a new innovation strategy. These are exciting times for CzechTourism  and we are thinking big!

We are currently assessing the feasibility of implementing a global distribution system which would provide an interface between Czech touristic sites and foreign/domestic operators.

“Unexplored touristic gems”

At the same time the focus of our day to day business is to divert the flow of tourists from the most frequented sites into regions which are developing their own destination brands. Our marketing focuses on Czech and Moravian historical assets (historical cities, castles, chateaus) and cultural heritage, active summer and winter tourism (skiing, biking), spas/wellbeing and the MICE (meetings, incentives, conferencing, exhibitions) segment.

What are the new attractions that you are promoting this year?

This summer, the CzechTourism has piloted a new concept, domestically, ‘unexplored touristic gems.’ We have identified 39 such sites across the country. Most recently, the UNESCO has awarded two new Czech destinations a world heritage site status, Kladruby landscape and imperial horse breeding station and the Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří historic mining region.

For example, the Krušnohoří region was the most important source of silver ore in Europe in 1460 to 1560, and Marie Curie-Skłodowska, the first woman to win Nobel prize, made her ground-breaking discovery of uranium in ore mined in Krušnohoří’s city of Jáchymov. CzechTourism will be promoting these destinations in key markets next year.

“Tourism already produces more gross national product than agriculture”

What are the initiatives that CzechTourism will take going forward?

The CzechTourism, under my watch, has launched a major review of the Czech national strategy to developing tourism, and have included all regions, large municipalities and other stakeholders in this review. This will help us develop concerted marketing activities and explain to our guests what is worth visiting, seeing and doing in our beautiful country. The future is smart, and I recognise that. And, we’d like to cater to families with children, and they require a certain comfort—infrastructure, information services, central booking, to name a few amenities.

The CzechTourism is now fostering a dialogue between regions, needs and expectation of tourists and the government to better support tourism as a sustainable sector of the economy. After all, tourism already produces more gross national product than agriculture, in the Czech Republic.

What are the lesser-known areas that you are promoting this year?

The country is dotted with new hotels set up in stately homes/chateaus belonging to the old aristocracy. There are former industrial sites turned into amazing stages for festivals, such as Colours of Ostrava. In Bohemia and Moravia, there are extensive biking and walking networks, and cities of Brno and Olomouc are planning breath-taking Christmas markets.

Co-founder of Cuckooz, Fabienne O’Neill, commented: “A weekend away certainly doesn’t have to break the bank and even when booking something last minute and for a bank holiday weekend, there are some very awesome but affordable options available.

By opting to go for something a little different, you can experience actually living in the city in a local neighbourhood, with better facilities and more space, and still, have some spending money for while you’re exploring.”

Inspired by the latest Spiderman movie, Klook highlights the best of London, Venice and Prague retracing the footsteps of Peter Parker.

In the upcoming Marvel film, Spiderman: Far From Home, Peter Parker and his friends explore the cities of London, Prague and Venice. With the spotlight on these pivotal cultural, societal and historical destinations, Klook has curated a list of unique experiences for each city, inspired by the upcoming blockbuster, for travellers to follow in the superhero’s footsteps.

London

In London, a wide variety of authentic, captivating activities await. For first-time travellers, the best way to explore the city is through London’s famous underground tube and bus system, with the London tourist transport card for unlimited access to the public transit network.

First up, is the World Famous Tower of London Tour, which leads history enthusiasts through the UNESCO site at their own pace, learning about London’s past and admiring the iconic Crown Jewels. Next up is the world-famous Royal Albert Hall which takes travellers through the hall’s past, offering stunning views of the Albert Memorial and Hyde Park. An inaugural visit to the English capital is incomplete without quintessentially British food. A myriad of delights await foodies such as classic fish and chips, English cheeses, cakes, beer and ciders on the secret food tour.

Venice

Venice, a city synonymous with gondolas, is an intricate network of waterways, Marco Polo and adventure. The best way to explore this city is by water on a Venetian gondola. A ride will take explorers to the iconic St Mark’s Square and the basilica. Travellers can explore some of the exotic Byzantine art among the stunning golden archways inside the basilica. Foodies will revel with the walking tour of Venetian wine and food, where they can enjoy Venetian cuisine such as cicchetto and pastries while enjoying an aperitif.

Venice is also home to a variety of crafts, and the most notable one is glass blowing. This intricate craft can be experienced at the Murano glass blowing factory tour, just outside of Venice. An intriguing way to close a tour of Venice is with the secret walking tour. Explore the quieter parts of the city and discover hidden gems. Visitors will see sights like Marco Polo’s house, The Malibran Theater, one of the most famous opera houses in the city, and Campo Santa Maria Formosa, a lively city square.

Prague

Famously known as the city of a hundred spires, Prague has an abundance of cathedrals, golden tipped towers, and quaint cobble-stoned streets. Prague is best seen on foot as the various parts of the old historical city are within walking distance of each other. The best place to start in Prague is the Prague Castle and Cathedral tour, boasting stunning gothic, medieval and baroque architecture. The castle currently plays a role as the President of the Czech Republic’s official office.

After a day of exploration, visitors are able to fuel up and test their adventurous side on a secret food tour, which hunts for classic food staples, including local hams, sausages, soul-soothing soup, alcohol, and a mystery dish. The tour of this classical city ends on a musical note with a Midday Classical Concert at Lobkowicz Palace in Prague. In this majestic landmark building, renditions of famous pieces by Mozart, Beethoven and Hayden resound.

With excitement, culture and history at every corner, visitors following Spiderman and his friends across Europe with Klook’s expertly curated itineraries will be in for superhero levels of fun and adventure.

Whether it’s sleeping amongst the clouds in Liberec, partying in the raw industrial beauty of Ostrava, discovering one of 12 UNESCO heritage sites or unwinding in the oldest spa in Europe, The Czech Republic is overflowing with alternative experiences and natural beauty.

We get a special low down from the Czech Tourism Board on what makes it an exciting destination for 2019 and less obvious than the backpacking favourites in the region.

Moving over Prague

If the historic city of Prague seems like an overdose already, watch out for Karlovy Vary. Situated in the scenic valleys of the Tepla and Ohre rivers, this town is the crown jewel of Czech Republic’s exceptional spa and wellness industry. A historic gem and Europe’s oldest spa town, Karlovy Vary boasts the highest concentration of “curative mineral hot springs anywhere on the planet”. With a promise to become the next spa destination, its seven spas all provide a variety of treatments and drinking cures utilising available natural resources.

Next up is Brno, the fastest developing country in the Czech Republic, and “a mecca of architecture and gastronomy”. Buzzing with young adults, Brno is home to top restaurants, historic beer houses, trendy cafes and wine bars. A city of modern architecture, with the stunning functionalist Villa Tugendhat, a protected by UNESCO and considered the “most beautiful villa in the world”, Brno is an ideal starting point for trips to UNESCO heritage sites, with no less than seven in the surrounding area.

Ostrava, an enthralling open-air gallery, this former industrial heart of the country is now a creative hub of music, nightlife and culture. Ostrava hosts the two biggest music festivals in the Czech Republic– Colours of Ostrava and Beats for Love. Both are located in the striking setting of the Lower Vitkovice technical heritage site, highlighting the area’s emerging creative scene from Ostrava’s industrial past.

Who is it for

We have seen a surge in tourists from the Middle East flocking to Czech. All within a five-hour flight from UAE, and blessed with pleasant summers and a totally unique experience who can really resist it. Whether it’s history lovers looking for impressive Bohemia history and castles or millennials looking for some of Europe’s most special art districts and music festivals, it does have the potential to appease different groups of travellers.

In 2018, the tourism board has been heavily focussed on the Asian markets. In November a number of representatives attended shows in China and they said they see the Asian market as hugely important.

Not too far behind in the league for pleasing millennials, Czech tourism is eager to pitch in its “happening cities” to a younger target market that is travel-conscious and looking for new destinations. While the heritage cities such as Kutna Hora, Litomysl and Olomouc offer a wealth of UNESCO heritage sites, historic sites and culture ideal for an older target market.

With harsh winters, it may just be another European summer destination. Is it an all-year destination? Contrary to my expectation came an excited, “Yes of course! The Czech Republic has fantastic seasons.” In summer, some of the wonderful hiking and biking trails which include 40,000 km of marked trails come alive with local and international tourists. The Křivoklátsko Protected Landscape Area is magnificent in autumn with the beautiful forests changing colours and cities such as Prague are some of the most desirable Christmas destinations in Europe. Then there is the big lure of wine tourism between September and November for the harvesting season.

Unknown side of Czech

The tourism board is increasingly putting a big focus on alternative cities and hence created the 2019 campaign of ‘joyful, happening and heritage’ cities to showcase the diverse nature of the Czech Republic. Picturesque cities such as Karlovy Vary and Liberec offer wholesome trips for the whole family, heritage cities such as Kutna Hora and Olomouc showcase the rich history and cultural importance of the Czech Republic with a vast array of UNESCO heritage sites and happening cities such as Brno and Ostrava are buzzing, young and stylish.

In line with this campaign, they are doing a series of promotional events on spring spa towns, art districts and wine trails to put their wine and cuisine on the world stage.

To ease traveller experience, in Prague they have introduced a digital money pass which will allow visitors to use one card to cover entry into most major attractions along with transport. 2019 also brings in a number of new hotels opening including the Radisson Blu in Prague, and a major refurb of historic hotel Diplomat.

China will get its first air link to Serbia next month, when Hainan Airlines launches its new route between Beijing and Belgrade.

Commencing on 15 September 2017, the new long-haul route will be operated twice a week as an extension of the airline’s existing Beijing-Prague route. This follows the granting of fifth freedom right to Chinese airlines, allowing them to operate flights from the Czech Republic.

The new Serbian service will be offered every Monday and Friday aboard Hainan Airlines’ Airbus A330 aircraft, which features flat-bed seats in business class.

This will mark the first time a Chinese airline has flown to Belgrade in 25 years, since the suspension of Air China’s service in 1992, at the time when Serbia still formed part of Yugoslavia.

While details of the national carrier’s planned Prague services have not been confirmed, they are likely to make use of Vietnam Airlines’ new fleet of long-haul aircraft, including the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

These modern jets have already been deployed on routes to several European cities, including London, Paris and Frankfurt.

The new route, which would likely be served from Hanoi, would mark the first direct connection between the Czech Republic and Southeast Asia. The only other Asian carriers operating to Prague’s Václav Havel Airport at present are China Eastern Airlines, Hainan Airlines, Korean Air and Sichuan Airlines.

Vietnam Airlines and Czech Airlines are partners in the SkyTeam alliance and the new flights could also open up codeshare opportunities.

Extensive facilities inside the hotel’s Conference and Events Centre have been joined by two brand new sophisticated boardrooms on the Lobby floor.

Catering for clients who require privacy and state-of-the-art facilities for meetings of up to 10 people, both boardrooms are fitted with 65-inch flatscreen TVs, a media hub built into the boardroom table and are offered on a flexible pricing basis which includes hourly and daily rates.

Boardroom 1, the smaller of the two boardrooms (measuring 22 metres square), channels a Scandi look with wooden floors and a sleek shelving unit across one entire wall. The larger room, Boardroom 2, measuring 28.7 metres square, is minimalist in style and sits up to ten boardroom style in a soothing coffee and cream colourway, with dark wood touches and contemporary overhead lighting.

Both rooms have been designed by internationally renowned London-based design studio Goddard Littlefair.

On the ground floor, Lounge 62 at Corinthia Hotel Prague is a new all-day dining facility which recently opened. The number in the name is a nod to the year that the first Corinthia hotel opened, in Malta, in 1962.

‘Broken’ plan seating with banquet and mustard yellow leather chairs exudes a luxurious and chic charm matched by Chef Richard Filip’s impeccably prepared International lunch menu featuring local influences and regionally sourced ingredients. Sharing plates are offered in the evening paired with expertly crafted cocktails.

Guests can enjoy everything from smoked salmon and fruits of the forest with fresh bakery products for a light brunch – paired with local products and cuisine as part of the hotel’s Artisan Market programme – to Lobster Bisque or a burger for lunch. Evening items range from a small plate of Czech charcuterie or Red Beet Marinated Salmon.

Afternoon Tea at Lounge 62 offers an exclusive selection of the world’s finest from Dammann Frères as well as the hotel’s handmade desserts from award-winning Executive Chef Krofta. An extensive wine list showcases a perfect balance of local, old world and new world wines.

Sichuan Airlines, which is based in the Chinese city of Chengdu, has launched flights to Prague – only its second destination in Europe.

The new direct service to the Czech Republic took off from Chengdu’s Shuangliu International Airport on Friday (12 August 2016). The scheduled flights will now run twice a week using a twin-aisle Airbus A330 aircraft.

On the outbound leg, flight 3U8295 departs Chengdu every Tuesday and Friday at 1245 and arrives in Prague at 1715. The return flight, 3U8296, leaves the Czech capital on the same days at 1915 and arrives back in Chengdu at 1045 the next morning. The flight time is approximately 10 hours.

Prague becomes the airline’s second European destination, following Moscow. But its long-haul expansion is expected to continue in future, with new routes to Los Angeles and Auckland expected to commence in September and December 2016 respectively.

London might be the favourite European city destination for special celebrations, but Prague is the cheapest if you’re planning to drink a lot.

Prague is a popular city-break destination among Brits.
Prague is a popular city-break destination among Brits.

That’s the consensus of the Celebration Breaks Drinks Barometer from Post Office Travel Money, which conducted a consumer research poll of cities most popular for a celebration break.

Almost half of those visiting cities across Europe are now there to celebrate an anniversary or big event – ranging from birthdays, retirement and forthcoming weddings to marriage proposals – with London, Paris and Barcelona the top three destination choices.

Travellers planning these celebration trips rate ‘a good range of bars and restaurants’ as their top priority – with Prague offering the lowest prices for drinks, according to the research, which involved a cost comparison of 12 drinks in 16 European celebration capitals.

The Czech capital’s tally of £28.74 for the average price of drinks, ranging from beer and wine to cocktails and spirits, toppled Budapest (£30.20) from last year’s top spot to second place.  Prague’s prices, down eight percent year-on-year, are also less than half of those in 10 of the 16 cities surveyed, including London (£60.70), Barcelona (£60.56) and Paris (£63.26).

The Post Office research found that bargain-hunters should head to cities in Eastern Europe.  Aside from Prague and Budapest, three others – Krakow (£33.82), Riga (£49.95) and Tallinn (£53.11) – made it a clean sweep for Eastern European cities at the top of the table.

Majorca’s capital, Palma (£56.72), emerged as cheapest in Western Europe. Its barometer cost for the 12 drinks is also lower than in two other Spanish seaside celebration cities.

“Our research shows that the cost of a special celebration evening out can vary dramatically, depending on your choice of drink and which city you visit,” said Andrew Brown of Post Office Travel Money. “Check out prices before booking a city break because some advance homework can help to ensure the bar bill doesn’t bust the celebration budget.”

Emirates has launched two new routes using its Airbus A380 aircraft, including its first superjumbo service to Taiwan.

A third of jobs are to go at Czech Airlines (CSA) after restructuring plans led to the removal of some A320s.

The carrier has informed the Employment Office it will fire 77 pilots, more than 200 cabin crew and 60 administrative staff in the cut-backs, which come after several aircraft were taken out of the airline’s fleet.

CSA spokesman Daniel Sabik said some of the pilots or crew could be given jobs at other SkyTeam alliance carriers.

Sabik said: “Korean Air and Aeroflot, for example, may employ most Airbus A320 pilots for whom CSA will no longer have work. The decision that CSA will no longer use the Airbus A320 planes was discussed and unanimously approved by all CSA shareholders at the company’s general meeting in early September as part of the restructuring plan.

The airline has been forced to bring forward its restructure after passenger numbers from Russia and Eastern Europe dropped as a result of the Ukraine crisis.

Korean Air acquired a large part of the shares in CSA last year.

Jon Garnham from Beaver Travel shares his views on the AITO overseas conference in Prague held earlier this month.

As I’m new to the travel sector with a background in marketing, I was really interested to see how the AITO Agents overseas conference in Prague dealt with the challenges affecting the industry.

The structure of the conference was extremely good.  I was especially interested to see how all the delegates treated the conference as a way of airing their opinions and talking through mutual issues and challenges.

The first speaker of the weekend, Charles Reid (director at Carat), talked to us about digital media and how best to use it in order to promote your business.  What I found most useful from Charles’ talk, was his advice about focusing on one or two forms of social media, rather than attempting all platforms.

The second speaker, Karen Willey from The Music Concierge, talked about the huge importance of music for businesses and how it can truly differentiate your company from others. I thought Karen’s talk was extremely interesting and it really got me thinking about how customers must perceive us when visiting the shop!

The two roundtable discussions were also very useful and I thought the input from all the travel agents, tour operators and affiliates lead to some good debates and thought-provoking ideas.  I could have seen these discussions going on for hours.

The Marketplace was very effective, with the travel agents sitting down and the operators moving around each time. Having the opportunity to meet roughly 30 different companies in such a short period of time gave me the perfect taster of each one – I could then talk to the relevant people in detail later in the evening.

As an overall experience, I found the AITO Agents conference very rewarding – the companies who attended were really impressive and I gained a huge amount of knowledge and understanding. I look forward to the next one!

Updated 30 January 09:47

Flights to and from Europe could face cancellations and delays today due to industrial action in several countries.

British Airways, easyJet, Ryanair and TAP Portugal flights to and from Portugal and Italy faced disruption and cancellations yesterday as the air traffic controllers went on strike, with further delays expected today.

ATCs in Austria, Cyprus and Malta also went on strike yesterday.

While strikes lasting several days were cancelled in France, industrial action started last night (29 January) and will finish in the early hours of tomorrow morning (31 January).

easyJet said it and other airlines have been asked to reduce their flights to Paris by 20% during the strike period, causing cancellations.

ATCs from at least nine countries are participating in the strikes at various periods this week, in support of safety concerns raised by the Air Traffic Controllers’ European Union Coordination from the European Single Sky agreement.

Further strike action will take place at various times today in the Czech Republic, France, Hungary, Italy, Portugal and Slovakia.

NDC has raised concern from several parties

The European Technology and Travel Services Association (ETTSA) has repeated his call for more industry involvement into IATA’s New Distribution Capacity (NDC) during a talk at GBTA Europe in Prague.

ETTSA’s secretary general Christoph Klenner urged IATA to “get real” and include more distributors, travel agents and buyers in the development of the new standard despite IATA saying it had included various industry members during NDC’s preliminary stages.

Klenner has argued that while IATA claims NDC is a data standard, the text could have broader implications including a potential rise in fare costs.

“NDC as it stands is bad news for travel buyers. It is fundamentally at odds with the principles of managed travel programmes – transparency, the ability to comparison-shop anonymously, and the facility of having a single repository where all travel data is securely stored,” said Klenner.

“NDC appears to involve a group of airlines attempting to collectively impose on buyers, consumers and travel agents a business model which is founded on the use of opaque fares and ancillaries to make real comparison shopping difficult, if not impossible,” he added.

Klenner believes that by using specific fare requests, airlines will be able to tilt the pricing power in their favour and in effect lean customers more towards them than travel partners.

He said the association is keen to work with IATA on a “mutually acceptable solution”

IATA has faced several criticisms for its NDC system since its announcement but has always responded by saying it spoke to travel agents, technology companies and airlines during its set-up process.

Budapest is cheapest for Brits while in-city

Cities in eastern Europe are still the cheapest for British tourists to visit while Lisbon tops those in the euro, a new Post Office report has found.

Its City Costs Barometer saw Budapest’s forint currency trump Riga and Prague as the cheapest city when pricing up the total of 12 typical holiday items such as a meal, local transport and sightseeing. The total cost for Budapest sat at GBP134.76,  less than a third of the most expensive cities of Stockholm (GBP420.36) and Copenhagen (GBP440.45).

However of the 25 cities surveyed prices had increased in 22 of them, with Stockholm seeing the biggest rise by 33%, followed by Riga (+30.7%), Boston (+28.4%) and Vienna (+26.3%). Costs dropped in Berlin, Prague and Lisbon, while of the cities using the euro Amsterdam and Rome were the priciest.

The Post Office named Dubrovnik as an emerging city break destination for Brits alongside Moscow, Krakow and Abu Dhabi although New York, Sydney and Rio de Janeiro topped the dream list. Domestically Belfast was the cheapest UK city to visit.

“Rising prices in most of the cities we surveyed, combined with the falling value of sterling, make it more important than ever to check prices for key items like meals, drinks and sightseeing before booking as these are costs that most city break tourists cannot avoid,” said Andrew Brown from Post Office Travel Money.

“There are big price variations across Europe – not just in the eurozone. This means UK holidaymakers can make their pounds stretch further by choosing a cheaper capital like Lisbon or Budapest and it seems that many people are doing just that as Post Office sales of Hungarian forint have surged by 141% in the year to date, compared with 2012,” he added.

Etihad Airways has formed a new frequent flyer partnership with and Czech Airlines.

From 1 August, members of  Etihad Guest and Czech’s OK Plus frequent flyer programmes will be able to earn and redeem miles on the flights of both airlines. The cooperation builds on an 18-destination codeshare relationship which the two flag carriers launched in June 2011.

“This is a natural next step in developing our partnership with Czech Airlines and in providing members of Etihad Guest and OK Plus with the fantastic opportunity to earn and spend miles seamlessly on each of our networks,” said Peter Baumgartner, Etihad’s Chief Commercial Officer.

“Czech Airlines is a quality airline with an attractive network, and one that links with our own global operations over Abu Dhabi. Hotel Hoffmeister, Prague

City breaks across Europe have been a top seller for many tour operators so far this year, so Simon Willmore takes a relaxing trip to Prague

Once more, the fascinating machinery whirrs into life. The cage of scolding red hot coals is picked up, levered vertically upwards and over, and plunged back down into the bath of water, releasing perfumed vapour into the space around me. Now on its tenth cycle of this unusual process, I’m starting to get into the swing of things, but the first time I saw this extraordinary contraption I was genuinely taken aback, which is not the traditional consequence of a spa treatment; however, this is no ordinary spa.

The steam floods over towards me and gets to work, warming up my body and releasing all the tension in my weary muscles. I reach down to massage my legs, sore from exploring the land of make-believe that is Prague, and study the ornately decorated mosaic bench beneath my feet. My seat seems normal enough for such a routine, but my surroundings are as unorthodox as they come.

That’s because the Hoffmeister’s steam room is actually a steam cave, cut into the very rock of Prague’s hillside. Upon entering the spa, visitors start their ‘Steam Ceremony ’by being led down steps into a space that is thought to be 15th century underground torture room – a curious choice for a haven for relaxation. The usual amenities are present: sun loungers (despite the lack of exposure to sunlight), jug of chilled water, luxurious fluffy white dressing gown; but they are all found in an area not even three metres high, with the bare rock face still visible – showcased, even.

Hoffmeister's steam cave

The isolated nature of the place, despite being so central it is practically in the shadow of Prague Castle, actually helps the wind-down process after a long day of sightseeing, shopping, and generally soaking up the childlike magic of the Czech capital. The city is like something straight out of a fairy-tale, with winding cobbled streets, imposing gothic churches and opulently decorated statues around every corner.

After the steam and the calmness of the setting have worked a different kind of magic, I leave the Lily Wellness and Spa area – also on hand here, for all your care-soothing needs, are a Roman bath with hot tub, beauty salon, and treatments spa offering body wraps, peels and massages. I float back to my bedroom, along the winding maze of lifts and corridors. The hotel, because it has been built into the hillside, is based over four staggered storeys, which, although confusing at first, adds to the boutique style and individual nature of the place.

Of the 43 room and suites on offer, encompassing a wide range of styles and sumptuousness, 11 are Junior Suites and three are Honeymoon Suites, by name Tower, Jing & Jang and Polak, measuring up to 75 m2in size. Even some of the standard rooms have kitchenettes and / or direct access, and all rooms come with flat-screen TV, Wi-Fi and access to underground parking as standard.

My bedroom, up on the third floor and so also one of the furthest (horizontally) from reception, was large and well-appointed. All the fittings expected from a five star were included, including fully-stocked mini bar, air conditioning and huge king bed, but possibly the best feature was the bathroom.

A generous shower cubicle, plus double sinks with toiletries aplenty, would have been adequate, but the bath tub – complete with bubble jets to make your very own private hot tub, was the showpiece. After a soothing massage bath, plus all that walking through the city’s enchanting maze of palaces and castles and an optional steam ‘ceremony’, a good night’s sleep is practically a hotel guarantee.

Upon waking, breakfast, which is free to all patrons, is served in the Ada restaurant and is a thorough if non- virtuoso affair. All the English requisites are present, including sausage, egg and beans, but Czech favourites like pickled herring are also available and are definitely worth a try if fish doesn’t seem too rich for a morning meal. After choosing your food from the buffet, take a seat in the conservatory which looks out over a beautifully kept patio and garden area, great for sunlounging in summer.

Breakfast can be enjoyed in the ADA restaurant

Moving on from breakfast, those in town on business will be able to make use of four conference halls. With capacities ranging from 10 people to 50 people, the facilities offer varying facilities including private entry points, smoking areas and sound insulation. A special customisable catering menu is also available for the corporate clientele, including coffee breaks and lunch or dinner.

Talking of dinner, the Hoffmeister lays upon your table tradition Czech cuisine like schnitzel and perch as well as international specialities, including octopus in a Peruvian style. These are served in both of the hotel’s restaurants, Ada and Ria. However, those wanting a slightly more interactive way of dining should visit the Chef Parade cooking school, in the up-and-coming Žižkov district, for great afternoon out and for the chance to justify, to yourself at least, that you have earned the right to gorge on delicious schnitzel.

The necessary double ‘battering’ – both in the physical ‘with a hammer’ sense as well as the ‘deep fried with flour and egg’ implication – is something that doesn’t feature often enough in English food. Our group also baked gingerbread, proving that cutting stars out of pastry is just as fun at 40 as it is at four. Customers can take home their self-crafted goodies, choosing to ice them with white chocolate for an extra hit of decadence, provided they have enough energy to carry anything else – it’s enough of a challenge just to lug around that belly full of irresistible schnitzel, especially if you’ve already had a Steam Ceremony…

Simon’s trip was organised by Wizz Air and Czech Tourism. More information at www.wizzair.com and www.czechtourism.com

Czech Airlines and Etihad Airways have signed a new codeshare agreement. The move will see Czech Airlines launch new direct flights between Abu Dhabi and Prague, and offer onward global connections through Etihad’s network. The agreement will also allow Etihad passengers to book flights straight through to Prague and beyond to other Czech Airlines serviced routes.Philippe Moreels, Czech Airlines’ VP of Economics, said; “Czech Airlines is an important player on the European market but on a global scale it is difficult to compete without strong partners. We are extremely satisfied that we have found a genuinely strong and respected partner in Etihad Airways. I believe that the announcement will serve both outbound and inbound passengers extremely well. And it is merely the first step towards deeper and more intensive cooperation in the future.”Czech Airlines will inaugurate its first flight to Abu Dhabi on 21 September. The airline will initially operate four weekly return flights to the UAE capital, departing Prague every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday using an Airbus A319 aircraft.

The Czech Republic is keen to enlarge its tourism base from India, which has seen a 35% growth in arrivals to the European country.Prague and other attractions of the European country, known for its design, glass and beauty.Czech Tourism set up shop in India in September 2010 and since then has been working on ways to boost the 20,000 a year figure. Speaking yesterday at the launch of Czech Design Week celebrations in India, Radka Neumannova, Director of Czech Tourism, India, said one area is to promote film shootings for Indian movies in Czech locations. A 70-strong team of Indian film producers from Bollywood and elsewhere was recently hosted by Czech Tourism. The response has been good, she said, adding that they had an incentive plan to promote such shootings. She said spas, wine, beer and the MICE segments were focus areas for growth from India. Interestingly, she said that the marketing base of Delhi and Mumbai will be expanded to include Bangalore and Hyderabad. The famed glass and crystal works of her country as well as cuisine and art – which brings in 6.3 million tourists each year – could entice the Indian market too.A high-level Czech delegation is also in India to promote the event and hold talks with political and industry leaders.Skoda Auto is the major partner in the event, where the focus is on design. For the first time, the best of contemporary Czech Design is on display at Delhi and Mumbai till 17 May.
