Analysis of hotel booking data has shown that European tourists are becoming more adventurous in Myanmar.
According to Agoda, several less well-known destinations in Myanmar have experience a sharp increase in hotel bookings from European travellers in the past 12 months.
For example, the southern port city of Mawlamyine witnessed a 90% jump in hotel bookings, while nearby Hpa An experienced an 85% rise. Hsipaw, in the northern Shan State, saw a 64% increase in European hotel bookings.
And while these high growth rates will undoubtedly come from low base figures, Agoda stated that they reflect how Myanmar is opening up to travellers.
“Some amazing destinations in Myanmar are slowly opening up thanks to improving infrastructure. The traditional tourist loop, which used to include just Yangon, Mandalay and Bagan, is expanding,” said Errol Cooke, Agoda’s vice president of partner services.
Other Asian destinations experiencing rapid growth included Siquijor Island in the Philippines (+135%), Wakayama in Japan (+111%) and Koh Rong in Cambodia (+68%).
