EVA Air has announced plans to purchase 26 new long-haul aircraft from Boeing, valued at more than US$8 billion.
The agreement, which is yet to be finalised, will see the Taiwanese airline take delivery of 24 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners and two Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. This will mark EVA’s first Dreamliner order.
“We look forward to welcoming EVA Airways as Boeing’s newest member of the 787-10 Dreamliner launch customer group,” said Ray Conner, president & CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “EVA Airways has been a valued Boeing customer over the past few decades and we are honoured that they continue to introduce new Boeing wide-body airplanes into their growing world-class fleet.”
EVA currently operates a fleet of 56 aircraft, including 24 Boeing long-haul jets – 21 B777-300ERs and three B747-400s. But the B747s will be gradually phased out in the next two years as the airline adds more B777s to its fleet.
The B787-10 is the largest version of the fuel-efficient Dreamliner series. Scheduled to enter service in 2018, the long-haul aircraft will be able to carry approximately 330 passengers in a typical three-class configuration.
Prior to EVA’s order, Boeing had sold a total of 146 B787-10s to eight customers, including Etihad, Singapore Airlines, British Airways, United Airlines and ANA.
EVA has been expanding its long-haul operations in recent years, with a major focus on North America. In 2014 the Taipei-based airline added 45 more weekly flights to its trans-Pacific network, with additional services to Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Toronto and Vancouver.
Many of these flights are operated by EVA’s fleet of B777-300ERs, which offer either 312 or 333 seats in a three-cabin layout.
