A Chicago law firm has confirmed it is representing 83 people looking to sue aircraft manufacturer Boeing on the basis that a technical issue caused Asiana Airlines to crash land a plane in San Francisco.
According to USA Today Ribbeck Law Chartered filed a petition for discovery on Monday, which is meant to preserve evidence, in Cook County Circuit Court in Chicago – the headquarters of Boeing.
The firm also added that a separate case had already been filed against Asiana Airlines and it was planning to lodge cases against other component manufacturers.
Flight OZ214, operated using a B777-200ER jet, was coming into land at San Francisco airport following a flight from the Korean capital Seoul when it apparently fell short of the runway and hit a sea wall before catching fire.
Ribbeck has asserted that some emergency slides opened up inside the plane and passengers had to cut themselves out of their seatbelts. There were also reportedly problems with the 777’s auto throttle.
In a written statement, attorney Monica R. Kelly, head of Ribbeck’s aviation department, said: “We must find the causes of the crash and demand that the problems with the airline and the aircraft are immediately resolved to avoid future tragedies.”
Boeing spokesman John Dern said the company had no comment.
The petition asks a judge to order Boeing to identify the designer and manufacturer of the aircraft’s autothrottle and its emergency evacuation slides.
