Heavy fog descended over part of northern China on Sunday, forcing the closure several of major roads as travellers journeyed home after the Golden Week holidays.
Xinhua reported Chinese authorities as saying that visibility in Beijing was cut to less than 1,000 metres yesterday, and that six interprovincial expressways were closed, including those connecting the capital with Harbin, Shanghai and Tianjin.
Meanwhile, authorities in Tianjin said they had closed all 14 expressways in the city due to thick fog, while 13 expressways were closed in neighbouring Hebei province and 15 in the northeastern province of Liaoning. The eastern provinces of Shandong and Jiangsu were also affected.
Sunday marked one of the last days of the week-long National Day holiday period, which is expected to see more than 600 million people travel by road in China.
