The former chief executive of Indonesian flag carrier Garuda was taken into custody last Sat in connection with the murder of a passenger on a GA flight to Amsterdam in 2004.
Indra Setiawan was arrested along with Rohainil Aini, the secretary to GA’s chief pilot, amid allegations the pair falsified documents which allowed another suspect, Pollycarpus Priyanto, to travel on the flight.
Pollycarpus was an off-duty pilot with the carrier and was sentenced to14 years prison for his role in the murder of human rights activist Munir SaidThailb, allegedly using arsenic.
However the Supreme Court overturned the verdict last year, with Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono promising a further investigation.
Police said the probe had unearthed new evidence, with Pollycarpus likely to face new charges of premeditated murder.
However a lawyer for Garuda insisted there was no evidence to connect the newly arrested pair with the plot, saying they were “just linked to the issuance of the documents”.
Munir, who was an outspoken critic of government agencies, died during the flight from Jakarta to Amsterdam via Singapore.
The controversy is a further blow to Garuda, which is already reeling from the crash last month of a 737 at Yogyakarta Airport which killed 21 people.
