INDONESIAN flag carrier Garuda says it’s “concerned about the accuracy of the alert posted by the US embassy in Jakarta” (TD yesterday), and that reporting of the alert is “portraying a false message” to the travel industry.
The US alert states unequivocally that “no Indonesian air carrier was found to meet minimum civil aviation standards”.
However a spokesman for the carrier told TDthis morning that “the reality is that under the recent assessment by the Indonesian Directorate of Civil Aviation, Garuda Indonesia was awarded a category 2 rating.
“Only those airlines in the lower category (category 3) failed to meet some requirements which may reduce safety,” he said.
He said that as an international airline and a long-term member of IATA, Garuda Indonesia places the safety of its passengers as its highest priority, and is confident that its systems and procedures “in all aspects impacting on safety are on par with international best practice.”
