Glasgow Airport has seen a positive start to the year with a 6% increase in passengers for January year-on-year.
The Scottish airport had more than 436,000 people travel through its doors last month, with 4% growth on domestic routes into London.
However its international flights saw larger growth with a 9% increase particularly for flights with Lufthansa Regional, KLM, Jet2.com and Emirates.
“January is traditionally a quiet month so it is very encouraging to have made such a positive start to 2014,” said the airport’s managing director Amanda McMillan.
While the airport will have new flights to Cardiff with CityJet and extra capacity to Warsaw for the Euro 2016 qualifier matches; the airport is more focused on Glasgow hosting the Commonwealth Games this year.
“2014 will present a fantastic opportunity to grow the inbound tourism potential of the city and we are committed to playing our part. Our preparations for the Commonwealth Games are now at an advanced stage and people will start to notice real changes within the terminal building in the coming weeks and months,” said McMillan. “Other large scale events such as the MTV Music Awards and the Ryder Cup will showcase Glasgow to the world and the recent confirmation that Hampden Park will host the London leg of the IAAF Diamond League was yet further good news for the city.”
