Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) recorded a slight increase in traffic in May 2016.
The airport handled 5.8 million passengers and 34,370 flight movements last month, marking year-on-year growth of 1.4% and 0.7% respectively.
Hong Kong resident traffic, which increased 4%, was the main driver of passenger growth in May, while demand for flights to and from Southeast Asia and Japan continued to rise.
“We are pleased that HKIA’s extensive flight network continues to grow. HK Express will introduce direct thrice-weekly passenger service to Takamatsu, Japan in July, offering more choices and greater convenience to travellers during the summer holidays,” commented Henry Ma, general manager of market & connectivity development at Hong Kong’s Airport Authority.
For the first five months of 2016, HKIA has now handled 29.4m passengers and 170,960 flight movements, up 5.0% and 2.5% respectively compared to the same period last year.
