India has signed a new agreement aimed at expanding its tourism links with Cambodia.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on 16 September by India’s vice president Hamid Ansari, during his visit to Cambodia, with the aim of promoting bilateral tourism between the two countries. The deal was formally approved this week by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The MoU covers a wide range of areas, including the exchange of tourism information and data, encouraging cooperation between tourism stakeholders including hotels and tour operators, and establishing exchange of programmes for the development of human resources.
It also includes trade and media fam trips, sharing best practices in areas of tourism promotion, marketing, destination development and management, mutual participation in travel fairs and exhibitions, and the promotion of “safe, honourable and sustainable tourism”.
Importantly, the MoU also promotes investment by the two countries in the other’s tourism and hospitality sectors.
The India government recently extended the electronic tourist visa facility for citizens of Cambodia, and the country’s Ministry of Tourism said it believes the MoU signed with Cambodia “will further increase tourist arrivals from this important source market”.
