India’s e-tourist visa system appears to be growing in popularity, with more than 10% of arrivals to the country using the online system in November 2015.
According to new data from the Ministry of Tourism, a total of 83,501 international travellers entered India on e-tourist visas last month. The represented 10.2% of the 815,000 overseas visitors travelled to India during November.
Visitors from the UK accounted for the highest number of e-tourist visas (23.9% of the total), followed by the US (16.3%), Russia (8.2%), France (7.6%), Germany (5.6%), Australia (4.8%), Canada (4.7%) and China (3.3%).
And the majority of the e-tourist visas were issued at Delhi Airport (45.0% of the total), followed by the airports in Mumbai (17.7%), Goa (14.6%), Bengaluru (5.6%) and Chennai (5.2%).
For the first 11 months of 2015, India has now issued a total of 341,683 e-tourist visas. This marks an increase of more than 1,200% year-on-year, but the scheme has been significantly expanded in the last 12 months.
