The Indonesian government is planning to raise an ancient Chinese ship, which many have been laying on the ocean floor for up to 600 years. Local media reported that the ship, which lies off the coast of West Sumatra’s Mentawai Islands, was only discovered after the devastating tsunami that struck the region in October last year.
“A permit to lift the sunken ship off the waters of South Pagai, Mentawai, is currently being processed,” local news portal, kompas.com, reported an official with the West Sumatra Maritime Affairs & Fisheries Agency as saying this week.
The ship, estimated to be 20 metres in length, is thought to date back to between the 15th and 17th Centuries.
