InterContinental has arrived in Kuala Lumpur. Managed by InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), InterContinental Kuala Lumpur replaced the previous Hotel Nikko Kuala Lumpur on 1 February 2011.
The 473-room hotel, located on Jalan Ampang, welcomed its firsts guests at the stroke of midnight on 31 January 2011 with a traditional Malay welcome by beating the gong in the lobby. At the same time, the logos at the exterior were lit up and the InterContinental flags were raised at the hotel entrance. The next morning the sound of the “kompang” (Malay drum beat) greeted the staff as they were served with a Malaysian breakfast specialty “Nasi Lemak”, “Teh Tarik” and curry puffs. Outside, more than 800 taxis queued up at the hotel’s entrance to pick up free lunch boxes and gifts.
A special “Yee Sang” lunch to toss to prosperity, good health, good luck and happiness for all was organized in the staff cafeteria. GM Adam McDonald; Charles Marshall, Area General Manager - Malaysia and Thomas Lee, Director of MTJ Development Sdn Bhd joined in the “Lo Hei” to usher in good luck into the hotel.
