Japan Airlines (JAL) experienced a 32% year-on-year reduction in passenger traffic on routes to and from Europe in June 2011. A combination of reduced routes following its 2010 bankruptcy and the impact of the 11 March disasters in northeast Japan meant that JAL carried just 50,700 passengers in European routes during the month, compared to 67,100 in June 2010. The airline slashed its available seat capacity by 25% during the month, but this did not keep pace with the drop in passenger traffic, causing average load factors to fall to 70.4%. Overall, JAL flew 496,500 passengers on international routes in June 2011 – 37.4% fewer than in June 2010. The rate of decline was less severe than in the previous two months however; in April JAL’s traffic slumped 47.0% year-on-year, followed by a 42.6% drop in May. International load factors for June 2011 averaged 72.1%.
