The organisers of Tokyo 2020 have selected the venue for the first ever Olympic surfing competition.
Tsurigasaki Beach in Ichinomiya, Chiba prefecture, which is located east of Tokyo on Japan’s Pacific coast, was selected due to its “dynamic waves” and accessibility from Narita International Airport.
Surfing will make its Olympic debut at the 2020 Games.
The government of Chiba is now planning to leverage its new status as an Olympic host venue to attract more tourists.
Tsurigasaki Beach forms part of a longer coastal stretch called Kujukuri, which covers approximately 60km of coastline and hosts regular international surfing competitions and festivals.
