Korean Air has placed an order with Boeing for 11 more long-haul aircraft.
Confirmed at the Paris Air Show on Tuesday (18 June 2013), the order will see Korean Air acquire five more B747-8 Intercontinentals and six B777-300ER aircraft, in a deal worth US$3.6 billion at current list prices.
“Korean Air is a valued Boeing customer and their commitment to add more Boeing twin-aisle airplanes to their fleet demonstrates our strong partnership,” said Boeing’s commercial president & CEO, Ray Conner. “Korean Air has steadily built its reputation as an early adopter of new technology and innovation and Boeing airplanes have played an instrumental role in that strategy.”
Korean Air is one of only four airlines to have ordered the passenger version of the B747-8, along with Lufthansa, Air China and Nigeria’s Arik Air. The latest order increases the airline’s total commitment for the aircraft to 10, following a previously deal for five B747-8s signed in December 2009. Korean Air also currently operates a fleet of 11 B777-300ERs, along with the B777-300 and B777-200ER.
On delivery of its first B747-8, Korean Air will become the first Asian airline to operate both the B747-8 Intercontinental and the Airbus A380. It also has outstanding orders for 10 B787-9 Dreamliners.
