Australian air passengers have been warned not to put lithium batteries in their luggage for risk of fire. Instead, the safety body has advised people to keep the power packs – commonly used in laptops, cameras and mobile phones – in their hand luggage. Other foreign regulators have already issued such warnings after the US Federal Aviation Administration logged 113 incidents involving batteries and smoke, fire or extreme heat between 1991 and last year. According to The Australian newspaper, this is a suspected case of Thursday’s Asiana Airlines crash.
