Little done to change unmanaged business travel

The majority of businesses are leaving employees to book their own travel even though they would prefer them to book through an agent, new research has found.
A study from Carlson Wagonlit Travel (CWT) found 87% of businesses have not tried to deal with unmanaged travel and do not intend to do so, although 62% were against the idea of staff booking travel through their own means.
Corporations that had implemented a more relaxed policy were said to have had more positive feedback although still needed close support and contact. However it appeared the companies did not think the technology was in place to offer an experience similar to what leisure customers go through.
“We do expect to see consumer trends continuing to influence corporate traveller behaviour and expectations, with a clear emphasis on increasing traveller choice. However, recent feedback from our customers has shown that while this migration towards increased choice is steadily taking place, today’s solutions are not yet robust enough to allow them to relax their booking channel policies,” said David Moran, CWT executive vice president, enterprise strategy and marketing.
Around 45% of CWT’s bookings are for complex, multi-destination trips and 45% of its European reservations are changed before or after ticketing.
Compliance to travel policies put in place by businesses has been a long-running discussion within the industry and has increased as mobile devices grew in popularity.
