Lufthansa passenger traffic declines in 2009

Lufthansa flew 55.6 million passengers in 2009, down 2.6% from the previous year. Demand, measures in revenue seat-kilometres, fell by 2.4%, with capacity being scaled back 1.3%, leading to a 0.9-point drop in load factor to 77.7%. Passenger numbers dropped in all traffic regions with the exception of the Middle East/Africa. Of the total passenger count, 13.8 million flew with SWISS, 3.3 million with Austrian Airlines and 3.8 million with bmi.
