A record number of delegates from China are attending the International Pow Wow travel trade event taking place in San Francisco from 21-25 May. Some 120 Chinese tour operators, meeting planners and journalists are registered for the event, which is produced by the US Travel Association.
International Pow Wow is expected to generate more than US$350 million in tourism business for San Francisco in the short term alone, and an increasing proportion of this will come from China. More than 1,100 tour operators from 70 countries will “shop” the largest travel industry trade show in North America, meeting in 70,000 pre-set appointments with some 3,500 exhibitors from every corner of the US.
To enhance the Chinese delegates’ visits, 25 Mandarin-speaking volunteers from the American Language Programme at California State University, East Bay will act as escorts and interpreters during the business appointments on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The volunteers have been trained on the background of International Pow Wow and the travel industry so that they can assist in translations during meetings with US-based travel suppliers.
