Malaysia Airlines routes traffic through Dubai with Emirates deal

Malaysia Airlines has formed a new partnership with Emirates that will see it drive more global traffic through Dubai International Airport.
The comprehensive codeshare agreement, which was signed by Emirates’ president Sir Tim Clark and Malaysia Airlines’ CEO Christoph Mueller, will see the Malaysian national carrier place its ‘MH’ code on Emirates’ flights to more than 90 destinations across the world – 38 in Europe, 15 in the Americas and 38 in the Middle East and Africa.
Significantly, this will include daily flights to multiple destinations across Europe, and even double daily flights to cities including Zurich, Rome, Munich, Frankfurt, Madrid and Barcelona.
This could potentially allow Malaysia Airlines to cut its direct European services, as it previously did with its North American routes, and focus on developing its Asia Pacific network.
In return, Emirates will place its ‘EK’ code on up to 300 daily Malaysia Airlines flights in the Asia Pacific region, mainly in Malaysia and Southeast Asia.
“The strategic partnership paves the path towards an integrated customer proposition offering for both airlines,” said Mueller. “Dubai is a tourism, trade and logistics hub which has earned itself the reputation as being the gateway between the east and the west. Not only will this provide Malaysians unprecedented super-connectivity to the whole world, it will also make it much easier for travellers from all corners of the globe to visit Malaysia and experience its rich culture, nature and Malaysian hospitality.
“This is part of the national carrier’s initiative towards enhancing air connectivity with key priority markets overseas for increased tourist arrivals into Malaysia,” he added.
Sir Tim Clark commented; “Malaysia Airlines’ extensive network in the emerging Southeast Asia region perfectly complements Emirates’ global network and enhances the choice of travel destinations for customers in both the business and leisure segment.”
Sales for the codeshare flights will commence on 1 February 2016 and the agreement will be gradually implemented throughout the course of next year.
Emirates and Malaysia Airlines operate a total of five daily flights between Dubai and Kuala Lumpur.
