Guests at hotels in the Malaysian city of Melaka will have to pay a new heritage tax from September. The New Straits Times reported that the 5% surcharge will be added to all room rates in the UNESCO-listed city. The state’s Chief Minister, Mohd Ali Rustam, said he expected the tax to generate MYR12 million (US$4 million) per year, which would be used to help preserve heritage sites in the city.
