The Ministry of Tourism has extended its Clean India Campaign by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Railways.
The MoU was signed in the presence of Tourism Minister Subodh Kant Sahai and Railways Minister Mukul Roy. The agreement will allow both the ministries to work together on awareness campaigns for train travellers and service providers under the capacity building scheme of the MoT. The two ministries will also work on consultations and discussions with the stakeholders, including the travel trade, to evolve strategies for the up-keep and cleanliness of the stations and coaches.
“Railways is a major driver for development of tourism and the campaign will help in effectively branding India as a major tourist destination,” said Sahai.
The MoT will undertake branding of long distance trains running on important routes in different regions of the country. The branding exercise will depict important tourism sites in India, while the other side will carry Clean India campaign messages on mutually agreed routes and terms.
“Indian Railways have taken a number of steps for improving cleanliness by the way of green toilets, clean train stations, rag picking contracts, washable aprons on platforms, mechanised cleaning on the stations and on-board service schemes,” said Roy in an official statement released by the PIB. Railways will also encourage hotels, travel trade associations, companies and corporate houses to adopt railway stations in order to implement Clean India Campaign.
