Singapore’s new Marina Bay area is set to host a new sailing event later this year, when the BAY Challenge is launched on 14 May 2011, as part of the Boat Asia 2011 event.
Aiming to attract at least 10,000 spectators over two days, BAY Challenge will be set against the backdrop of the new Marina Bay Sands integrated resort. It will see 16 regional teams of three-crew members competing in high performance Laser Bahias in a match race format. Two boats will race in a one-on-one battle around a two-lap course, in a knock-out format.
Tan Wearn Haw, CEO of the Singapore Sailing Federation, said; “SingaporeSailing’s role is to inject vibrancy into the sailing scene and grow the sport. Making it a viable and self-sustaining ecosystem would be a testament to the value proposition of sailing. So we are happy to sanction the upcoming BAY Challenge and excited to grow BAY Challenge as a key sailing event for Singapore and the region with TMX.”
Herman Ho, Managing Director of race organiser, TMX Show Productions Pte Ltd, added; “We are truly excited about bringing sailing into Marina Bay, Singapore’s major business, residential and recreational hub. Through the BAY Challenge, we hope to encourage Singaporeans to embrace sailing not just as a sport, but as a lifestyle, and at the same time position Singapore on the regional sailing map.”
