Boeing has delivered the first Dreamliner to Norwegian.
The new B787-8 will be operated by the Scandinavian carrier under a leasing agreement with US-based International Lease Finance Corporation (ILFC), which has ordered a total of 74 Dreamliners. The delivery also takes the company’s total fleet of Boeing aircraft to 700 planes.
“Today’s delivery is a tremendous milestone for two leaders in their respective markets,” said Boeing’s commercial president & CEO, Ray Conner. “ILFC continues to demonstrate its industry leadership as the first leasing company to take delivery of a 787. Norwegian gains a significant competitive advantage by opening its long-haul routes with this airplane.”
Norwegian currently has eight B787s on order – five through lease agreements and three through direct orders. It will use the aircraft to launch new long-haul routes from Oslo and Stockholm to New York and Bangkok. In November, the airline also will deploy the aircraft to Fort Lauderdale from Oslo, Stockholm and Copenhagen.
“It’s with great pleasure we eventually take delivery of our first 787 Dreamliner,” said Norwegian’s CEO, Bjorn Kjos. “Both our many customers and we at Norwegian have been looking forward to this for several months. I’m convinced that our customers will love flying this brand new aircraft with its many customer friendly features. Our goal is to operate the most environmentally friendly and cost efficient fleet, something to which the Dreamliner will significantly contribute.”
To date, Boeing has now taken 930 Dreamliner orders from 58 customers. Twelve airlines now operate the Dreamliner, with the 13th, Hainan Airlines, expected to receive its first B787 this week.
