Penang to unveil upgrade hill train

The upgraded Penang Hill train system is expected to begin full operations next month. The new service, which will run at a speed of 36kph, will be tested prior or launch and is expected to be able to carry 100 passengers up the hill in approximately five minutes. The old trains tool half an hour. The New Straits Times quoted Malaysia’s Tourism Minister, Dr Ng Yen Yen, as saying that the new train is expected to boost visitor numbers to Penang Hill four-fold to 2.4 million visitors per year. The 87 year-old Penang Hill station has also been upgraded.
