The Aliwagwag mountain range in the Philippines is now a protected area after President Benigno Aquino III approved calls by environmentalists for its preservation. Aliwagwag, situated in Davao Oriental, is now under official protection with peripheral areas acting as a buffer zone. This is good news for tourism as it means the area’s waterfalls and forests will be preserved for ecotourism. Outstanding contracts for the extraction of resources will be honoured, however if after explorations the areas prove fruitless, they will be incorporated into the Aliwagwag Protected Landscape. Speaking to local media, Davao Oriental Governor Corazon Malanyaon welcomed the decision calling it a big boost for the province’s tourism programme and their environment protection efforts.
