The tourist authority announced on Friday that it would offer discounted transport fares, hotel rates and activity fees to develop the niche market. The government has also requested that tourism product and service providers extend 20% discount rates enjoyed by handicapped Filipinos to disabled tourists. If the call is heard, visitors will be entitled to reduced admission fees, travel expenses and medical costs. The statement was made by Tourism Secretary Alberto Lim who identified this significant and overlooked group of travellers as a vast and untapped market. He said that by offering “barrier free” travel and ubiquitous disabled access, Philippine tourism would open up the nation to 10% of the global population. According to AFP, the government is committed to reducing their transportation constraints by making toilets, bathrooms and doors easier to use for the wheelchair-bound, and putting up ramps, handrails, and non-skid floors. It is also encouraging service providers to similarly modify venues to cater for disabled visitors.
