Members of Phuket’s travel and tourism industry were told to keep improving and prepare for change ahead of the ASEAN Free Trade Agreement (AFTA) in 2015.Somprasong Khomapat, Inspector-General of the Ministry of Tourism & Sports, offered a stark warning to travel professionals at the Phuket Creative Tourism Forum last week. Reported by Phuket Daily News, Somprasong said they must work to preserve Phuket’s competitive advantage and develop human potential to compete with other ASEAN tourist cities.President of the Phuket Tourism Association (PTA), Somboon Jirayus, added that businesses cannot rely on the same old strategies, but need to keep reinventing themselves to bring back old customers and attract new ones. The association wants Phuket to become a “City of Creative Tourism” and a seminar was held to get the industry thinking.
